Phillips Petroleum Co filed a record for 1,380 acres of oil and gas leases in Adams County Iowa. The action brings total leased area in the county to about 4,000 acres, concentrated in the east and southeast regions.
A. C. Duen, manager, reported a canvas money bag containing 2300 in checks and 10 in cash stolen from the Waterloo store. In Mason City the 125 worker closed shop strike at Ideal American and Lyons laundries left both plants idle, with Lyons serving only hospital orders.
Forty eight additional oil and gas and mineral leases were added in Union county bringing Phillips Petroleum Co to 19 588 acres under contract. The Phillips leases account for about 95 percent of those on record in the county. Frank Phillips, president of the company, formerly lived in Cres ton.
Waterloo reports an intended price increase for milk did not take effect. An agreement reached last week between producers and distributors aimed to raise the quart price to 11 cents, ending a 10 week milk war. Several distributors had agreed to a temporary 10 cent price.
Davenport report shows labor groups opposing a plan to adopt daylight saving time in the Tri Cities next summer. Charles Reagan of Rock Island Illinois secretary of the Tri City Federation says early morning hours are best for working men but adds labor will fall in line if daylight time is adopted.
Dr. J. Robert Forbes Webster county coroner opened an inquiry into the death of Mrs. Lottie Green 82 fatally burned while her mother Mrs. Wealthy Weaver 104 slept nearby unaware of the blaze. Green reportedly ignited her clothing while starting a living room stove fire.
Corning reports the body of Dan Lynch a 50 year old bachelor farmer living five miles south of town found frozen in mud and ice of a small creek about a mile from his home. Lynch had been missing since last Saturday night returning from Corning with a brother he went to a field to drive in the cows. Deputy Otto Anderson said the corpse lodged on a fence post across the creek and likely carried down stream through three other fences.
Mrs Wallace Tibbs of two miles south of Crawfordsville died suddenly yesterday at her brother Joe Johnn's home in Winfield after flu and a hemorrhage. Funeral services will be held at Winfield Methodist Church. She leaves a brother and daughter Grace of Rome.
Sheriff H M Putnam launches a county wide enforcement against owners of 855 delinquent vehicles for unregistered license plates. The list includes 294 cars 49 trucks eight trailers and four motorcycles. Owners receive a formal notice detailing required affidavits and penalties including arrest for operating without valid plates.
Construction on the Second Avenue underpass progresses with abutments poured and about half the bridge work done. Cave-ins caused by recent rains and frost hinder activity. superintendent H. E. Daley moves to protect the concrete plant. Pumps installed east of the bridge will clear water, and structural steel for the bridge top will arrive soon. Ralph Hall leads carpentry, P. G. Kratzke oversees engineering.
Maxine Logan of Washington won first place in the county safety essay contest for high school students on How Iowa Highways Can Be Made Safe. Lois Yoder and Jeanne Demaree took second and third, with Logan previously winning the county contest last year.
Early today firefighters answered a silent alarm on West Monroe Street after residents smelled smoke and feared a house fire. A chimney blaze at the post office was also ruled out as non dangerous. The Farmers Mutual truck assisted at Hugh Morris location.
Concrete pouring for the second floor of the Stewart grade school on North Fourth Avenue was underway after a cold snap delayed progress. Brick work on the first story is done, with second story brick laying set to begin after the floor is poured. contracts for Lincoln grade school were approved February 28 with J E Lovejoy of Des Moines as general contractor Pierson and Pierson of Fairfield plumbing and heating and Furlong Electric of Des Moines as electrical contractor.
Paul Kyle of Iowa City and George Means arrived in Ames yesterday with Mildred Kyle and Richard Birney, joined by Vera Foss and Naomi Kyle, all students at 1.8.C farm residence east of Ainsworth. Fire was under control before the truck arrived and its services were not required.
The Iowa House rejected a proposal to prohibit employment of women in beer selling venues and also refused to bar minors from entering such places. Debates centered on effects on restaurants and households as lawmakers moved to tighten beer laws. The bill aims to reduce beer outlets by eliminating many Class C permits and tightening Class B permits based on population counts.
Mrs Mary Coakley of Washington wins 5600 damages from Buford Reece and the Waterloo dairy cattle congress after a September 1937 fall in the horse barn. She sought 75000, claiming a severe back injury. the jury deliberated more than ten hours.
Rev W J Stevens of the Foursquare Gospel church announced the tabernacle on South Marion avenue has been redecorated inside and its appearance improved. The parsonage next door has an interior repaint and wallpaper. The church interior is painted tan and white. Mr Hammond did the work.
Mr and Mrs John Harrison of Cotter were business callers here on Wednesday visiting local firms and discussing trade prospects.
Washington's Chamber of Commerce voted against a bill changing the town sales tax. A committee led by D. F. Barnes was directed to inform Senator A. Claire Dewey and Representative EF. L. Stewart. Members criticized the plan as cumbersome and unlikely to raise state revenue, noting stamps as tax receipts and urging wider opposition.
Chairman Ed Hanson announced at the Chamber meeting that the annual membership campaign will start next week. The seven member committee, with officers and directors, will invite every local business person to join, aiming to boost community interests and improve the chamber’s effectiveness and budget.
Chamber of Commerce committee chairman Walter Rukgaber announced at last night’s meeting that the first auction sale using dividend dough as money will be held Saturday afternoon. Between 56 and 75 items secured from Washington stores will be offered at auction in Central Park and can be purchased only with the dividend dough. Washington business houses have been passing out the money with purchases, one dollar of dividend dough for each dollar spent. Rukgaber said the project has drawn interest and expects a big crowd, with plans for more big days through the year and a request for suggestions or complaints to the committee.
Fred Downing chair of the centennial commission told the Chamber of Commerce last night that plans are moving forward for the annual celebration this year with tentative dates August 9 and 10. The event aims to attract thousands and includes a contracted historical pageant and other entertainment. Ed Laurie of Leon Beatty Post American Legion proposed sending a boy to the Legion's Boys State in Des Moines next summer to foster citizenship and patriotism. the Chamber may sponsor one boy.
Judge P J Siegers adjourned Washington court for two days and will resume in Montezuma where a new term began earlier this week. Frank Bechly of Montezuma is due in Washington Monday to sit for the rest of the March term as jury trials, starting Monday afternoon, with criminal cases first. Captain Jay Brown announced Troop FP 113th Cavalry will hold its annual banquet and program on Wednesday evening March 29 in the YMCA community room. Frank Miles of Des Moines, who spoke previously, will deliver this year’s address, with Adjutant General Charles Grahl and Col. Max O’Brien among officers invited to attend. Jessie Poteander of Wellman visited yesterday.
The United States, in a strong statement read by Undersecretary Sumner Welles and endorsed by President Roosevelt, condemned Germany for the temporary extinguishment of Czechoslovakia and warned of strained relations. Britain recalled its Berlin ambassador and Mussolini was alerted as Germany presses its expansion.
Coroner Kenneth Boughton reports a man burned beyond identification was found in a wrecked vehicle in a ditch. The car, tentatively identified as Virgil Spray's, a 28 year old farmer from near Garnor, was so hot the body had to be removed with a log chain.
