Glen Hi stand, age 23, of Orson, Iowa, was killed when a tractor he operated overturned and crushed his head. Witnesses say the machine may have rolled after a sharp wheel turn.
Lawler hatchery operator August Schael has written the song Ring Around the Moon to be aired today on more than 100 radio stations. He has previously written several songs, but this is his first to gain such recognition.
Mrs. August Kreinbring noticed thousands of tiny flying insects on her bedroom curtains. Her husband investigated and found swarms of grasshoppers emerging from eggs hatched in the house plants kept by the window.
Col. Norman F. Ramsey compiled passes signed by every arsenal commandant since 1864 starting with a permit dated November 1 1864 to visit a prison camp housing Confederate soldiers. In Ottumwa John Lay 63 was seriously injured when he fell while running to extinguish a grass fire at Dr L H Prewitt’s property and broke his hip.
Harold Crain of Humboldt will direct a 130 voice choir in Elijah at the New York state fair this season. Crain, son of Mr and Mrs G Crain, teaches three Syracuse University English classes while pursuing a PhD. He formerly attended Morningside College.
Jerry Fridwards aged 36 was found unconscious in a Waterloo ditch after being slugged with a car crank. He regained consciousness but remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Charles Busby, 31, is jailed on an open charge in connection with the assault.
District court reopened to begin selecting a jury for the case of the state vs Justin North charged with burning personal property to defraud an insurer. The truck burned Nov 14 1938 at the Walter Crawford farm northeast of Washington is the alleged crime scene. County Attorney Richard A Stewart represents the state and L J Kehoe defends.
President Roosevelt named William O. Douglas to be associate justice, to succeed Louis Brandeis. Douglas, 40, former chairman of the Securities Exchange Commission, is from Minnesota and raised in Washington state. Senate indications suggest smooth confirmation as Western senators seek representation on the court.
The Chamber of Commerce program committee announces that R. E. Walker manager of the Cedar Rapids credit bureau will speak at the next meeting on April 20. He will discuss merchant credit problems and is well known among Iowa credit managers.
Washington Chamber of Commerce organizes a public address system for a Saturday auction using Bogus Money. About 156 items offered in an initial sale with modest prices, aiming to show bidding dynamics and fun for attendees. Event set for 2 p m next Saturday with planned variety and lively atmosphere.
Minnie Landau of Iowa City visited with her mother Mrs. Anna Landau and sister Marie Landau over the weekend, enjoying time together away from home.
J W Chandler begins duties as Washington County Agent succeeding W J Rouda bush who resigned last January. Chandler returned from the Ames extension conference to start contacting county residents and plans new services for farming interests with the Farm Bureau.
The Graham store was entered by breaking the back door lock and a small amount of change was stolen between 5:00 Sunday and 8:00 Sunday evening. Sheriff H. M. Putnam is investigating. thief used gas-pipe to pry entry and likely acted during daytime without being seen.
The country home of Mrs. Tillie Millice four and a half miles northwest of Wellman burned Saturday about 2 30 in the afternoon. The cause is not known though a defective chimney is suspected. The twelve room two story house on the Johnny Crawford farm was built 37 years ago and was a local show home. Neighbors helped combat the blaze as the Wellman fire truck lacked water pressure. most first floor goods survived and a few second floor items but nothing from the basement. Insurance partially covered the loss.

A southeastern Iowa district meeting of home making teachers was held in Washington on Saturday with twenty three teachers attending. The event focused on conference and planning for tenth month home contact employment. Supervisors Mary Parris and Portia Hutchinson from Des Moines attended, led by Grace Randell of Washington High School.
The Civil Aeronautics Authority begins inquiry into a Saturday crash of a $500,000 Boeing sub-stratosphere transport near Seattle. Ten people died as the plane reportedly lost a wing in a power dive during a flight for a Netherlands commission.
Firefighters answered a Sunday call to a north side residence where a roof blaze began. The fire was extinguished with only minor burn damage reported and no injuries.

Britain offers trade aid to Romania while Moscow reportedly proposes a nine power conference to curb Hitler. Churchill and allies push a united front with France Poland Romania and Balkan states.
The Junior High School program titled A Folk Festival in Song and Dance will be presented Tuesday night at 8 in the high school auditorium. It features junior high pupils and the junior high band, with free admission after a postponement due to illness.
