A district court jury in Fairfield finds Lawrence Albertson of Ottumwa guilty of illegal possession of fish. He had appealed a Justice court verdict. Sentence will be passed March 27.
Ottumwa health authorities lift four week visitor ban at Sunnyslope tuberculosis sanatorium as influenza cases decline. Epidemic subsides though several cases remain in the city.
Two boys aged 13 and 10 hid in a west side storm sewer to elude companions and wandered in a labyrinth of underground tunnels for more than an hour in Cedar Rapids. A motorist, George Kubasa, heard their cries and rescued them.
Albert Lunt and Lynn Fontanne arrive from Kansas City to stage Amphitryon 38 at the Shrine Auditorium tonight. The famed pair perform in Des Moines as part of their current engagement.
Oscar Kallenberg, Marshalltown's blind grocer who appeared on Robert L. Ripley's radio program, retires after 38 years operating his grocery. He could handle all tasks including making change and using scales despite his handicap.
Eulalia Kling heil of Postville was chosen by University of Iowa women to head the University Women's association for next year. She belongs to Pi Beta Phi. Isabelle Armstrong of Hutchinson Kansas will lead the Women's Athletic association and Lucille Mullen of Davenport will head the Young Women's Christian Association, as announced at the same election.
Des Moines Iowa revision to admit only honorably discharged service members with war service or widows meeting age 50 and income under $600 goes to the house. The bill, authored by Senator B C Whitehill former home commandant, narrows eligibility for Marshalltown facility.
At a northwest Iowa Minnesota and South Dakota youth conference attended by about 400 youths, a plan to conscript men aged 60 to 65 first was proposed. The idea would then draft men 55 to 60 and beyond, with youths called last, aiming to open jobs for the young and reduce pension costs. Proponents argued this could slow war and spare older men from hardship.
Des Moines police arrested 132 people in a stag party raid at the Hotel Port Des Moines. Sixty five pleaded guilty in municipal court for the raid and paid about 460 dollars in fines. Twenty seven had already pleaded guilty to resorting to a disorderly house and were fined 15 dollars each.

Notiideen of Oxkalooss, master of the Royal and Select Master Masons of Iowa, was in Washington for a special meeting of Zeredatha council last night. Frederick E. Roe of Burlington and Harry Sickman of Muscatine were among visiting grand officers, with Roger Sherman presiding as illustrious master. The grand master unveiled a symbolic triangle from New York bearing the first council officers, now shown in Iowa and slated to go to Colorado.
Lloyd Foster of Jackson township serves as foreman as the grand jury for the March term of district court is impaneled by Judge P. J. Slegera. Other members include Don Applegate Franklin township Lewis Coon Highland Mearl Keekels Seventy-six H R Morgan Kalona H J Myers Cedar and A J Nichols Wellman. The term is not expected to run as long as January's three weeks.
Des Moines reports the state supreme court upheld Harvey Mighell hol stein's conviction and 10 year sentence for stealing butter valued at 1179 from Chrystal Springs creamery in Kimbalton. Mighell accused as a ring leader of a theft ring spanning Iowa Minnesota and Nebraska.
Henry Lang of Sioux City confessed robbing a Neptune Iowa grocery store and implicated Harvey Nave. Lang had been involved in the five year old Farm Holiday beating of District Judge C C Bradley and is jailed again in Le Mars Iowa.
Washington March 16 The farm ers share of the consumer food dollar for 1938 was 40 cents the smallest in four years. Out of each dollar paid by city workers 60 cents went to processing transport and selling while 40 cents went to producers of raw foods. The study covers 58 foods and compares 1938 with 1937 1936 1928 and 1913 15 averages. Farmers received 120 dollars of the 821 spent by the average family and others 191 for middlemen and distribution. The report notes the spread between farm receipts and consumer payments has widened over 25 years and suggests potential gains if consumer income improves.
Albert Orcutt’s Piggly Wiggly opens at noon in a remodeled, self service oriented store on North Town Avenue opposite Fred N. Stewart Hardware. Improvements include black glass front, plate display windows, new maple flooring, wallpaper and painted ceiling. Self service gliders for two baskets and elevated alley entrance for farm shoppers are emphasized. Existing staff remains, delivery service continues for orders over one dollar, contact number 241.
A man received a 30 day sentence for alleged involvement in the assault on Bradley. National guard units were rushed to Le Mars after the attack.
Judy Warren has been ill since Tuesday with flu at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs L A Warren.
In Washington the Czechoslovak minister Vladimir Hurban refused Germany’s order to place the Czech legation under German control. He said he must await written instructions from Prague. Reports indicate Hitler’s protectorate may prompt official action. In Prague the US legation’s status was anticipated to change. At the San Francisco exposition the Czechoslovak flag was raised at sunrise and then lowered to half staff.

Two plays by high school students Wise Girl and Sweet Sixteen. A junior college group presents The Neighbors.
Chaplain Rees of Ft. Madison state penitentiary spoke to over a hundred men and boys at the Methodist church on why men end up in prison. He blamed factors like unemployment, liquor parties, broken homes, and envy of others, urging self-control and the habit of saying no to temptations.
A special Leon Beatty post meeting remembered the 1919 Paris founding of the American Legion with T. L. Brookhart of Washington as lead speaker. Brookhart described the St. Louis 1919 organization and early conventions while reading the Legion constitution preamble. Over 60 post members attended along with visitors from Fort Madison and Olds, with musical numbers by the Michels family and Carl Murdock. Former Washington post commanders also present included Harold Putnam and Preston Etter.
This morning the fire department responded to a blaze at Mr Crandall's North Fifteenth Street home. His car, driven from the garage into an alley, caught fire and was badly damaged.
John Lloyd Hughes presided over an oyster stew pie and coffee supper. Charles W. Davis directed the serving while Theodore Bailey the club treasurer presented a financial report for the past year.
The Sterling college men's glee club performed sacred Bach numbers and secular pieces at a United Presbyterian church in Sterling Kansas. Soloists Everett Lune ford and Harvey Luce received praise for their voices as did the humorous reading The Best Cure. The group planned a fifteen day tour through Iowa Nebraska and other Midwest states with a $28.75 supper fund aiding expenses.
The Washington county dental society held its regular monthly meeting last evening with nine dentists in attendance. After dinner at the North Side cafe, the group adjourned.
News from Prague reports Adolf Hitler announcing that Greater Germany has absorbed Czechia and Slovakia under self preservation laws. German troops occupy Prague and Moravia with Schutzstaffel actions and mass arrests. Joseph Tiso seeks Nazi protection for Slovakia. border conflicts involve Romania and Hungary as central European borders shift amid anti Semitic enforcement.
State highway patrol has begun stopping owners still using 1938 plates. Two cases were to be heard in justice court in Washington today. Sheriff Putnam said a delinquent list from the county treasurer will be used to identify owners not yet obtaining 1939 plates and summon them. Cars without current year plates in use may lead to arrest for law violation.
