A road accident near Oskaloosa sent Ida Bell, Waterloo, and Mrs. Tommy Miller of Cedar Falls to Mahaska hospital with injuries. Driver I. J. Campbell of Iowa City was at the wheel when the car skidded into a light pole.
Leon Oscar Beavers, a 66 year old farmer from Leon, was severely injured when struck by a car driven by Elmer Fleming, also a farmer, just east of town on highway 3. He suffered head injuries and a compound fracture of the left leg with key pavement blamed for the accident.
Des Moines was selected as the site for Iowa Republican state convention to elect 22 national delegates. The event will be held at the Coliseum with precinct caucuses on March 25 to March 26 to name delegates for county conventions.
James Wood 28 and James Clark 40 both of Webster City waived preliminaries before U S Commissioner F B Shaffer and were bound to the grand jury on $5,000 bonds each for allegedly breaking into the Goldfield post office with intent to commit larceny.
Des Moines Governor Wilton named Frank TD Johnson to review Lehan Ryan's claim that he did not receive a legal fee from a Nichols receivership while serving as an assistant attorney general. Johnson, a senior accountant, led the special audit of the state receivership department released Monday. Ryan denied any payment and sued Governor Wilson for 15000 dollars.
Four University of Iowa women received annual $25 scholarships from the University Women's Association at the Smarty Party. Winners are Caroline Cole Iowa City Senior Dorothy Ward Iowa City Junior Anita Davis Marmington New Mexico and Sadie Taxer Joliet Jr sophomores. A tie led to two sophomore awards for Anita Davis and Sadie Taxer.
Des Moines reports show lard and pork storage swelling as government data record a February rise and a March peak. Lard stocks reach 258,000,008 pounds, up sharply from a year ago, while total pork storage hits 648 million pounds on March 1. Farmers face low hog prices amid extended surplus.
Fort Hodge district judge heard Henry Andert of Fort Dodge challenge his non reinstatement in the International Brotherhood of Teamers Cheuffeurs Stablemen and Helpers. Andert says the union’s refusal to readmit him cost a 840 a week job chance while he had left the union last July with local approval. Carl Treban, secretary treasurer, said Andert was denied reinstatement for allegedly violating union rules while dock foreman for Port Predee motor freight line.
A major winter storm moved through Iowa Minnesota and the Dakotas. Temperatures were forecast five to ten degrees above zero with 11 inches of snow in parts of Iowa. Roads remained hazardous due to ice and drifting as sleet and freezing rain covered northern Illinois Indiana and southern Wisconsin.
Judge J. G. Patterson of Oska loosa set eight jury cases in the Washington county district court for trial starting Monday March 18 at 2:00. Trials proceed in order named, with the first three cases Monday, next three Tuesday, and two Wednesday, subject to settlement or continuances. Cases include J. & White vs Gardner et al, Rath vs Wess ley, Lemley vs Wessley, Delaney vs Wessida King vs Livezey, Duncan and Johnston partnership vs Mathers, Fred L. Stewart vs St Longer, and R. McKee vs Durst.
More than 100 high school vocalists will sing before 16 vocal coaches in Des Moines Iowa. Dr LL BO Watters of the Iowa High School Music Association announced the event is a vocal clinic not a contest. Each soloist performs a prepared piece and receives critique before joining in a mass ensemble at 2 p.m. in the Drake University auditorium.
A baker who quit his job after his employer would not furnish proper equipment applied for unemployment benefits. The state appeals tribunal noted the baker made minor repairs at his own expense but quit after discovering a fellow employee had damaged the bakery.
Commander Bobee Kurtz of Leon Beatty announces a three night industrial show at the armory on March 20 21 and 22 with free admittance and free vaudeville acts. Clara Sheehan O'Brien dancing studio provides dancing singing and acrobatics each evening at 8 30 and 10 00. Exhibits include 1940 model automobiles tractors and farm machinery with six car makes on display and booths filling space. Legion Auxiliary and post plan a bingo game and a butcher stand in the riding hall.
A fresh light snowfall covered the ground to under an inch last night and remains on the ground longer than last Saturday’s heavier snow. Cold, cloudy conditions persist through the period.

Members of the Loon Beatty American Legion post will hold a joint meeting and potluck supper Friday evening in celebration of the Legion birthday. Supper starts at 6 30 p m in the Legion rooms at city hall with birthday cakes and special features.
Harold Hind man, a six year pupil at Albia area farms, faced ninth grade last fall but was advised by an eye specialist to remain home to protect and strengthen his eyes for the next year. It was hard for him to stay out of school.

Coroner's jury rules Christian Ruekdasecel died from a skull fracture inflicted by an unknown assailant. The 86 year old was found in his burning home in Postville Iowa, with initial indications pointing to burns or suffocation. Investigators intensify efforts to identify the killer and solve the case.

Oklahoma officials mobilize the National Guard to halt construction on the Grande River dam and hydraulic electric project in northeastern Oklahoma using federal funds. Governor Leon Phillips, a Democrat, considers martial law for the project area to secure public power interests.
