McDonald 46 died in Council Bluffs hospital from a skull fracture after being struck by a log while using a power saw. He was a WHA worker sawing logs for fuel with his father. His wife and three children survive.
Mrs. Weideneyer of Charities City believed she escaped harm in the automobile accident but two companions were hospitalized with serious injuries. She suffered a fractured pelvis in the crash.
Duane Grandfield, 2, of Creston, was treated for pneumonia after an operation to remove a peanut from a lung. He was recovering from measles when the incident occurred.
Iowa City June 18 19 and 20 theme The needs of children and youth in a democracy announced by Dean George D Stoddard director of the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station. A youth conference will be held in conjunction with the annual meeting at the State University of Iowa.
Marjoris k of Council Bluffs captures the 940 prize in a DAR sponsored trip to Washington D C. The winner prevailed over four county finalists on scholarship dependability leadership and patriotism. She will receive the award at the conference banquet from Mrs CG Saunders of Council Bluffs chairwoman of the DAR committee.
Norma Jean Crago a 12 year old from Creston was taken by ambulance to University hospital Iowa City for infantile paralysis treatment. Despite paralysis of the lower body since last November she remains a superior student keeping up with her sixth grade class by reciting from bed to her teacher two evenings a week.
Harold J. Larson of Clear Lake and Kenneth A. Linder of Oakland along with 240 student pilots will move from Randolph Field to Kelly Field on March 22 to begin the final three month flying instruction before earning wings and commissions as second lieutenants in the army air corps reserve.
Former Iowa governor Nelson Kraschel charged Governor George Wilson with breaching public trust by releasing a special audit of the banking department. Kraschel claimed the move inflamed distrust in Iowa banks and the government and degraded the political process.
Guthrie Center art writer H. K. Ashton reported a request for a transcript of evidence in a Dallas County court case tied to Milroy Herne. The eight year old matter marked a notable instance in which Ashton was asked to provide a transcript after 21 years.
Attorney Theodore B Bailey of the Washington county Republican central committee announced caucus plans for March 23 to choose delegates for the county convention at the court house. Delegates are allocated by votes and precincts, with 18 sending to the Des Moines state convention and others advancing to the national Philadelphia gathering.
The Senate adopted by 40 to 38 an amendment to the Hatch clean politics extension bill defining any political contribution over 5000 as pernicious political activity. The surprise move shocks supporters who fear amendments will derail the measure extending the ban to state employees paid with federal funds.
In 1901 residents pressured to change the town name to avoid confusion with the nearby Sing Sing state prison. The petition led to the official renaming of Ossining, New York, separating the city from the notorious facility.
The six room frame Gowey farm home four and a half miles northwest of Brighton burned yesterday afternoon. No insurance covered the structure. Mrs Inez Gowey and son Rodney lived there and lost many household goods as neighbors aided in removal before the flames.
Donald Davis of Washington Iowa joins the Coe College military band on a week long spring tour through eastern Iowa and Illinois. The 65 students perform in more than a dozen concerts en route to Chicago where they will present the Palm Sunday program in Orchestra Hall. The band travels in large buses and has a national reputation with appearances at presidential inaugurations and the 1923 World’s Fair.
Funeral services for George W. Green were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman's funeral home conducted by De RR. C. Kenny. Burial followed at Keota Cemetery with pallbearers Sam Erwin H. B. Hammond Homer Stephen Merle Green Darvin Bohr and Floyd Carris.
Volunteers at Reg Oak tried two nozzles with no luck as a garage and car burned. They finally found a pair of baby shoes wedged in the hose, explaining the water flow obstruction.
Germany presses a Balkan aimed diplomatic move while Bucharest announces farmers and some workers will return home to boost Romanian output. The move follows reports of a German non aggression pact and Reich guarantees of Romanian territory in exchange for war material.
Vie Ritz and his wife, residents of the Kalona community, suffered minor bruises Tuesday night when their car was rear ended on road No. 24, a half mile east of Kalona. The crash occurred while they had stopped to clear ice from the windshield. the other vehicle was driven by Harold Younkin of Riverside. Sheriff’s office was not notified until today.
Webster City Iowa March 14 Burns suffered when a fire built by a five year old girl and two small friends in a home parlor proved fatal to Darlene Rose Merz daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Merz of Williams She died in Webster City hospital
The United Presbyterian church hosts a Palm Sunday vespers featuring a forty member choir performing Maudner’s cantata Penitence Pardon and Peace at 4:00. Soloists James Huff and Kenneth Peterson headline with Miss Helen Harvey on organ, including Faure Palm Branches and St Chrysostom pieces. Rehearsals began in January and a large crowd is expected.
Des Moines March 1940 The state conservation commission announced that building a $6 000 000 flood control dam on the Iowa River at Coralville would be inadvisable from a conservation view after a public hearing. The dam would flood 2 200 acres of bottom lands and would be funded by the federal government which would buy all affected land.
Canadian trappers produce 64 percent of the Dominion's annual fur supply and 40 percent comes from domestic fur farms.
All the high schools in Washington county were represented at a county schoolmasters meeting held last evening in the private dining room of the North Side cafe. About thirty schoolmasters attended. County Agent J. W. Chandler spoke on 4 H work linking with schools, drawing many questions. A pot luck dinner is planned at Riverside on April 24 with superintendents and their wives attending.
Iowa Attorney General Fred Dr. Everett and staff handle three major issues: a special audit of closed bank receiverships, a Supreme Court ruling upholding liquor restrictions near beer sales, and a ruling that slot machines are gambling devices. He then oversees 99 county attorneys and may direct actions to enforce liquor and gambling laws, amid election-year pressures and a pending case on reopening closed receiverships.
A belated cold wave moved eastward with threats of falling temperatures ice and snow from Virginia to Maine. Des Moines reported 14 degrees below normal as temperatures lingered near midnight and forecasters expected a slow warmup by tomorrow with the cold spell lasting across the state.
More than five hundred women attended the cooking school and theater party at the State Theater today sponsored by Iowa Southern Utilities Company. A T Carrow was master of ceremonies and introduced Mrs Emma Bopp who baked angel food cake seven minute icing pie crust brown sugar coconut cookies cinnamon rolls upside down rolls and kolaches. Moving pictures and modern cooking methods accompanied the event with a stage set featuring new gas ranges and electric refrigerators. The journal will publish recipes tomorrow.
Margaret Lesher has been ill since Tuesday with flu and related symptoms requiring rest at home. No further medical details are provided in the notice.
A passenger train collided with a citrus workers’ truck near Alamo Texas, killing 25 and injuring 17. Most victims were Mexican, and the truck was crowded with laborers moving between orchards as flames from a ruptured gasoline tank engulfed the scene. Witnesses recalled a roaring crash and a sheet of flame as the train struck the truck.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Samuel McCleery will be held at Jones funeral home Saturday morning. Dr kh C Keagy will conduct the service. The ashes will be buried in Elm Grove cemetery after the ceremony. her son Howard J. McCleery and grandsons Howard Nicola and Samuel Collin McCleery survive.
