Davenport column notes the first upper Mississippi corn shipment of the year will depart next week. The Central Barge line launches the W. T. Warren into the Rock Island district to load at Muscatine.
Louis L. Kenyon, 69, longtime Iowa City bank employee, died at his home. He formerly managed a laundry. Survived by his wife and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ed S. Reese died suddenly in a beauty shop in Estherville. She had suffered a heart ailment for years. She is survived by her husband, a Rock Island railroad conductor, and a married daughter in Des Moines.
Lenox Mrs. W. E. Young suffered severe burns while saving chicks from a fire. She stepped into the burning building as the floor collapsed, dropping her into flames. Neighbors pulled her out. most of the chicks were saved.
In Corning Mrs George Sanquist recalls a glioma illness similar to her daughter Helen’s. Doctors treating Helen note it is the second of 66 cases in their experience with another family member affected by the same cancerous growth.
Colfax Lions club formed with Dr. A N Cunningham as president and Johan Green as secretary. twenty businessmen attended. Norman Lovegrove of Des Moines district governor of Lions International also attended.
District Judge M. H. Kepler ruled in a mandamus action that Hancock County must shift 844 to the state highway commission. The money, once in the county general fund, came from refunds unclaimed by property owners who originally paid 25 percent of the cost of building Highway 18 through the county.
A. H. Goettsch Keystone auditor for the state liquor commission was cited for contempt and ordered by District Judge George Wood to pay $15 monthly toward a $2,475 delinquent support judgment for a minor child, Donna Goettsch Maddock. He appealed for a $5 weekly reduction claiming the child was adopted by his wife’s second husband.
DES MOINES Iowa January unemployment benefits totaled $804062 for 19296 claimants with 92723 checks issued averaging 867 cents per payment The state law fixes weekly payments from 5 to 15 dollars The Iowa state employment service also noted jobs secured for 465 persons in January down 18 percent from December but up 80 percent from January 1938.
George Norris of Ainsworth a former coach and school teacher was injured in a two car collision near Grinnell. Norris and a companion Walter Hockey of Montezuma sustained only bruises while two occupants of the Dubuque car were seriously hurt. R. R. Houser and Kennedy suffered broken ribs and pains.
A bill in Congress would raise salaries for five fourth class post offices in Washington county and for third class offices under $2100 annual receipts. Other measures would classify Washington post office on 100 percent of receipts to boost pay and services. A separate inquiry orders review of Wellman rural routes to cut costs by consolidating routes.
Governor Wilson signed a measure placing five state departments under legislative budget control. The affected agencies include the board of assessment and review, motor vehicle, administration of the highway commission, motor carrier division of the commerce commission, and code editor. The law becomes effective July 4.
In dense fog near Grinnell two men died while helping motorists. E. E. Collis, a Malcolm windmill repairman, was fatally struck four miles east while directing traffic around a burning car struck by a Grinnell driver Frank Roth. Later William P. Hagen of Granger, 49, was killed answering a tow call west of Grinnell after a fog related collision involving Orvis Schlotterbeck and Ralph Weidman. Vernon Anderson of Kellogg allegedly caused the final crash while approaching the tow scene. five others were hurt.
In Des Moines on March 11, opponents label a proposed truck tax bill Hitlerism at a public hearing attended by about 1250 truckers and 25 legislators. The bill would replace the ten mile tax with new license fees based on gross weight, including a $300 annual fee for certificated carriers and a $10 fee for smaller irregular-route carriers. Addison Parker argues the bill targets contract carriers and could raise rates toward railroad levels, harming smaller truckers. The session also notes farm to market road fund diversions and liquor by the drink hopes in the legislature.
Washington city voters face a filing deadline for the March 27 municipal election with only two tickets likely in the field. Citizen’s and Public Service tickets have filed most papers by noon, leaving R F McFarlane’s papers to be completed this afternoon. Ticket leaders include Mayor Rh Lytle on the Citizens ticket and O E Schmitt on the Public Service ticket with candidates for every office except treasurer and park commissioner on the latter. John W Lemmon and George W Rudiger appear on the Public Service slate among others with several wards represented on both sides. Johnston of Albia and family visited local friends Thursday.
In Muscatine Iowa two transients O F Kimball Lexington Ky and Roy Lane East St Louis IL face manslaughter charges after a coroner s inquest into the death of fellow transient Charles Fleschman from Wisconsin. The jury found the blows by Kimball and Lane contributed to Fleschman s death which was caused by heart disease. Both men have penitentiary records.
The Washington High School home music meet for vocal and instrumental contests will run Monday and Tuesday evenings. Monday 7:15 p.m. features instrumental solo auditions under director J. McEldowney of Sigourney High School with criticism and possible small group hearings if time permits. Overnight rain soaked dirt roads across Washington county turning them nearly impassable. A noon weather reading showed .35 inches of rain with totals near half an inch, while temperatures remained around 35 degrees.
Des Moines March 11 40. Federal authorities will not extend the March 11 deadline for corn loans. W L Dietrich state AAA committeeman says farmers must sign a note and loan agreement to qualify and be AAA cooperators. Iowa farmers have sealed over 100 600 000 bushels plus 16 000 000 bushels of old corn. total 130 000 000 bushels expected before deadline.
The vocal contest will be held Tuesday evening at o o clock in the high school auditorium with no admission charge. Judges are three Washington women Mrs Frank Miller Margaret Christianson and Mrs KE Morrigan Jr. Contestants include soprano Lois Humble June Garrett Margaret Hennon Frances Sartor Hazel Simmering Marjorie Walker alto Jane Steele Iowa Jean Huber tenor John Neyedly Raymond Whinsler Cecil Replogle baritone Mifo Steele and bass Bob Masson. Practice numbers feature the girls sextet glee club mixed chorus and mixed quintet.
Defense council troops launched a major assault on communist rebels in Retiro park to end civil war aims of peace with honor. Gen Jose Miaja ordered batteries onCars Angel sector and trench mortars west of the park to bombard rebel positions, intensifying through the morning.
Fire damaged the Wellman clothing stock and a cleaning shop in a two story 22 by 10 foot building owned by Will Maplethope Garwin. Losses estimated between 6600 and 7000 dollars with 2000 dollars to the building and most damages covered by insurance. Fire likely from defective wiring. discovered by Topping restaurant patrons. Local fire department controlled blaze.
Vatican announces Cardinal Magnome, former nuncio to France and laureate of the French Legion of Honor, is named secretary of state. A veteran diplomat, he is seen as second in prestige to the pope and is welcomed in France and other democracies.
It was Mrs. C. C. Dayton who saw the robin at her residence yesterday morning, not Mr. C. O. Davis as the Journal reported in the evening edition.
