Cedar Falls Edwin Puck of Moneta will head the men on the Iowa State Teachers college campus next year. He has been named president of the Men's Union. Kenneth Haahr and Alice Scanlon of Cedar Falls were elected to the board of control of student publications.
The college newspaper reports a poll showing student support for a marriage course. Ruth Culbertson, editor, and Joe Beave, student council president, will present the course plans to the administration after a campus campaign.
A car theft in Algona involved Dr. M. G. Bourne whose professional equipment stayed undamaged in the vehicle when recovered at Spirit Lake. Police seized a suspect for questioning in connection with the theft.
Ames report states Prof. R. K. Bliss longtime director of the Iowa State College extension service will receive a certificate of award from Epsilon Sigma Phi for distinguished service to agriculture.
Heavy weekend rains have rivers and creeks spilling into low lands. Crooked Creek near town and Skunk River at Brighton and Coppock are out of banks, with bridge area tides rising quickly.
Washington crowds heard the Parsons college Philharmonic choir of sixty five voices under Donald Dean Dawson in a Presbyterian church recital. Soloist Iola Dittmer performed Gallia with the choir providing the opening chorus and dialogue. Violin solos by Hugh Williams and piano by Mrs. Dawson complemented a fine program ending with Lyatkin’s Benediction and Seven fold Amen.
Rev W J Stevens of the Four Square Gospel church announced that Billy Opte who was to lecture Tuesday evening at the tabernacle cannot attend until about two weeks later he said.

John Donald Erlenbush twenty four year old died at 8 30 Saturday evening at the Washington county hospital after an operation for a ruptured appendix Peritonitis developed and doctors were unable to save his life Funeral services were held this afternoon at two oclock at the L A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev Vernon Carter pastor of the Christian church with the Odd Fellows lodge having a part in the service Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery Pall bearers were Lawrence Baker Henry Wagenknecht Lou Wagenknecht Elwyn Gardner Henry Zelglowsky and Ed Simmering He was born November 20 1914 at Mt Pulaski Illinois son of John and Florence Gross Ertenbush The family came to the Washington community when he was a baby He attended Pleasant Hill school and church and was a member of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges He leaves his parents his aged grandmother three sisters Helen Ruth and Mary Ellen and three brothers Chris Ralph and Robert all at the family home seven miles southeast of Washington

Emily Pickett Cunningham 81 prominent educator and former dean of women at Iowa State College died Saturday night at her Brooklyn home after a long illness. Burial is planned in Elm Grove Cemetery Washington Iowa after a 3:30 p.m. Wednesday funeral at Jones Funeral Home. Surviving are daughter Charlotte and sister Mrs Willis Hawley. Funeral services are in Brooklyn tonight with burial in Washington to follow.
City Clerk Howard Fulton announced both tickets had filed for the city election in Washington on March 27. The filing window had a time limit noted this morning.
Former State Treasurer Leo J Wegman ordered 100 million cigarette stamps. new administration reduced the order to 38 430 000 stamps to last until July 1. A pending law to outlaw bootleg cigarettes would require stamping by manufacturer or distributor and could add 500 000 to 1 000 000 to state revenue.
A pension division record notes an applicant aged 65 with 10 children under 14 and a recipient aged 65 with 13 children. It mentions multiple marriages through matrimonial bureaus and minors aged five, three, and two at filing, with later additions including twins and a wife aged 28.
Hannah Essenda Putman Shrader 85 widow of James L. Shrader died at 12 30 this morning at his daughter Mra I da Millers Mount Pleasant home after bronchial pneumonia. Funeral Wednesday 2 PM at the Christian church Rev Vernon H Carter in charge burial Woodlawn. She was born September 10 1853 in Hampshire County Virginia and came to Iowa as a child. She married James L. Shrader in 1878 and lived southeast of Washington then Pleasant Hill and later east of town. Survived by sons Jacob Phillip Thomas B and daughters Ida Miller Sadee McAvoy fourteen grandchildren three great grandchildren three great great grandchildren. a daughter Luella McMullen died last year.
Saturday evening closes filing with no new candidates joining the Citizens' for Public Service slate led by Mayor R. L. Lytle and O. Schmitt. The field remains limited to the established ticket as the election approaches.
The White House announced President Roosevelt has been delayed in preparing a message requesting additional relief funds and may not submit it to Congress before midweek. Officials cite other business but some believe the final relief amount for the WPA may not be determined until June 30. The president plans a late meeting with a group of senators to discuss relief unemployment and the economy.
Mrs. C. A. Nicholson died Sunday morning after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at two o'clock in the Christian church with Rev. Ver non H. Carter officiating. Burial followed at Kim Grove cemetery. She was born Clara B. Putnam February 28 1887 near Havre Washington county. Survived by husband Clayton A. Nicholson sister Mollie Therion Washington and brothers William Putnam Ottumwa and Jacob Putnam Ottumwa. Funeral arrangements by L. A. Jones funeral home. She and her husband traveled as singing evangelists visiting twenty states before returning to Washington in 1931. She was a member of the Church of Christ and the Order of Foresters.
James H. Bolleau and Roy Lapehire of Ainsworth won the bid to erect No. 7 district's new school in Washington township for 2467 dollars including the heating plant. The project, excluding furnishings, must be finished by July 1. Four bids were made by Schantz Wayland Votruba Washington and Cochran West Chester. The old No. 7 building burned February 8 and district voters approved the new construction on February 13.
The weather service reports 2.70 inches of rain over the weekend in Washington, with 1.95 inches fell from Saturday evening to Sunday morning. The heavy rainfall cleared ice and mud, improved dirt roads, and will aid soil and crops despite current rough conditions. Today is fair with a springlike day, after a 43 degree high and 29 degree low.
A car driven by Frank Winn collided with an electric light pole at the South Fourth Avenue and East Van Buren Street intersection Saturday. All occupants escaped serious injury. two small children sustained bumped heads after Winn swerved to avoid another vehicle.
Donald Walker 18 of Washington suffers facial abrasions after a two o clock crash east of Cotter. He was with Zene Kempf Wayland and Delbert Goodwin Washington in a Kempf driven car that struck a Columbus Junction wrecker aiding a ditched vehicle. Other passengers injured. Walker's injuries described as not serious, mainly to his right eye.
DES MOINES March 13 The house liquor committee killed the bill providing for sale of liquor by the drink on an optional basis. The committee refused to report the measure with recommendations, and could not report it out without recommendations under procedure.
Alberta Lucille MusGrove 16 died Sunday at Sunnyslope hospital tubercular ward in Ottumwa after a long illness. Born Oct 9 1922 north of Ainsworth she had moved from Rich mond to Washington six years ago. Survived by parents Philip and Dollie MusGrove two sisters Vivian Charline one brother deceased paternal grandparents maternal grandmother. Peter Gerot of Riverside was found dead at his home yard this morning. The heart attack death was attributed after Mrs. Gerot called for aid. Gerot, born September 27 1886, lived his life in Riverside farming and leaves wife Ida Moss, four sons Orval Daryl Robert and son Cleo plus daughter Elaine, one grandchild, a sister Birdie Godlove and a brother George Gerot. Funeral plans not set.
The March term of the Washington county district court was postponed due to Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma being ill. The opening now set for Wednesday March 15 with uncertainty whether Bechly or Judge P J Siegers of Newton will preside. Petit jurors to report Thursday at 10 am and again Monday afternoon March 20.
The bill would have given cities and towns the right to vote on whether liquor could be sold by the drink. If enacted local referendums would decide permissibility and licensing within jurisdictions. The measure aimed to shift authority from state to municipal level on beverage sales.
Rock Island Lines awards contracts to build two new streamline Rocket trains for operation between Chicago and Denver Colorado Springs at 1 200 000. Each train has seven cars a 2600 HP diesel locomotive and includes observation sleeping and dining cars with ample lounge spaces and an enclosed buffet. Cars will be stainless steel air conditioned and interchangeable with two extra coaches. Builders include Budd Pullman and Electro Motive with eight Rockets in service after delivery.

Raymond Willis, Republican publisher of Angola Indiana, filed with the Senate a petition challenging the reelection of Democrat Senator Frederick Van Nuys. Willis alleges Van Nuys won via coercion of government employees and ballot fraud.
Mr and Mrs John Wickert and their eight month old son Alan arrive as new residents in Washington Milwaukee. Mr Wickert becomes a new assistant at Penneys after eight years with the Milwaukee Penney store. Mrs Wickert is a trained nurse and the family brings hobbies in photography and art.
