John Jones of Grinnell, age 103, attended the funeral of his nephew John W. Benson. He will be 104 in September and remains active and interested in life.
Chess enthusiasts in Cherokee Iowa plan a state tournament on April 24 and 25 with three daily sessions: morning afternoon and night. Walter James editor of a national chess magazine will oversee as organizer.
Henry Miller, 694 Walnut farm hand from Harlan died in Harlan hospital after drinking poison. Coroner J P McGowan said Miller, German by birth, left a note stating he was single and had no relatives in the United States and directing that his body be given to a college. Insurance records show Miller survived by his parents and six siblings in Germany.
Seismograph crews south of Clarinda conduct preliminary oil tests in Page county. Tests taken on county roads near Shambaugh and Braddyville at about one mile intervals. Five cars with Texas licenses were present, though firms represented were not announced.
District Judge Earl Peters upheld Mayor W. S. McCall and the council in appointing Lloyd Roper as city electrician. The ruling also says the council and mayor acted within their rights by ignoring the civil service commission demand to reinstate Charles H. Hayes. The judge had the case under advisement for two weeks.
The Rev. Michael Martin, principal of Loras academy, appointed president of Loras College Dubuque by Archbishop Francis Beckman. He succeeds Monsignor Thomas Conry who led since 1923. Loras College was formerly Columbia College until recently.
Agnes Samuelson, former state public instruction chief and current executive secretary of the Iowa State Teachers association, was named chairman of the department of education by the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The announcement came at the Iowa Federation spring board meeting.
Des Moines District Judge S. Shankland overturned the Des Moines civil service commission ruling and ordered Patrolman Reuben W. Anderson rehired with pay from his discharge date January 6. The judge cited Anderson’s family illness and debt harassment as mitigating factors.
Under Ed McCloy editorial direction the University of Iowa humor magazine distributed questionnaires to campus women about dating costs. It states men average about $3.50 per date and argues men should not complain about dating expenses.
The labor movement remains split after CI O and AFL negotiators failed to agree with President Roosevelt and Secretary Perkins on key issues. John L. Lewis Philip Murray and Sydney Hillman led the CIO contingent while Matthew Woll T A Rickert and Harry Bates represented the AFL.
The Iowa senate approved 45 to 0 to rename the state board of assessment and review the state tax commission as part of a broader plan to centralize tax collection. The action follows a committee recommendation, with an estimated annual saving of 75,000 to 100,000 dollars and 35 transfer bills pending in the house. The house must also approve the name change and a farm to market road bill was set as a special order for March 15. An optional auditing bill for school districts and local governments passed 89 to 0 in the house and returns to the senate for concurrence.
Charles Landstrom 68 retired resident of Moline died Wednesday in city hospital after a lingering illness. He had lived here since 1897. He leaves a son, a sister Mrs Hilda Rose of Washington, a brother John of Rockford, and three grandchildren.
Washington readers may attend an illustrated lecture by William W. Overholt on Rural Life in China. Overholt, a former agricultural worker in Yenping and instructor at Fukien Christian University, will share photos and experiences from twelve years in China. The event is Sunday at 7:30 PM and open to the public.
Four Morse children died in a Mount Ayr kerosene fire that investigators say contained gasoline. State Inspector J. H. Hipsley said the sample from Mrs. Morse was used to start a kitchen fire. Mrs. Morse remained critically burned as funeral services were held for the children. Morse attended services then went to her bedside.
Chicago March 10 Mugging the photography based record making in railroads is expanding. Rock Island lines install recordak machines to photograph waybills at 90 per minute, reducing delays at junctions. Each 200 foot film reel stores up to 3,500 waybills and typed accounting records follow from projected images. Equipment active at Kansas City and Fort Worth speeds freight movement with teletype dispatch updates.
A note to the French government reportedly formalizes Italy’s claims in French Somaliland’s Djibouti port and the railway to Addis Ababa and seeks Italian minority rights in Tunis. Rome denied sending the note, easing fears of far harsher Tunisian demands and boosting hopes for an arms talks push by Neville Chamberlain.

In Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, martial law was declared and Czech troops occupied public buildings after the Slovak cabinet dismissed the premier's minister. The central government sent a Czech general to aid the Slovak government as protests by Hlina guards and workers grew.
Boston March 10 The anti third term league invited former U S Senator Smith W Brookhart to join. Brookhart replied a president with the best program and a good man to carry it out ought to have a third term or even a fourth term if necessary.
Chairman Wayne Norman of the Washington county AAA committee announced a strict deadline of March 31 for making loans on 1938 corn with no extension expected. The notice came from the county AAA headquarters and outlined the final timing for loan applications.
A new airline transport plane with advanced oxygen systems departed Minneapolis for a nonstop sub stratosphere flight to Boston. The 1,100 mile journey aims to fly at 20,000 feet for about four and a half hours.
The Washington municipal election on March 27 features Mayor Lloyd Lytle seeking re election as Citizens ticket candidate and O K E Schmitt on the Public Service ticket with a full slate. Lytle runs on a record of municipal improvements while Schmitt, chamber of commerce secretary, highlights community betterment. In the last mayoral contest two years ago Lytle won by 68 votes 659 to 591.
County Treasurer Marion reports Iowa lawmakers approved House file 229 to fund full 25 mill homestead credits. Previously only 12.5 mills could be credited due to funds, with refunds for those who paid in full to be issued in September. Government Wilson signature confirms transfer from general fund to homestead credit fund.
Dr. F. W. Eastwood is in Washington county hospital today with a fractured femur after a fall on the east side of the square. He had been ill with influenza and was en route home when the accident occurred. His condition is satisfactory despite pain. Miss Margaret Cowden, missionary from Isran, will speak at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning as Eastwood’s substitute. Parsons college choir will sing at the evening service.
Mount Pleasant reports Crista Millepaugh Dossett, Iowa and national 4-H health champion in 1923, was granted divorce from M. L. Possett in district court. Fifteen minutes after the proceedings began, proceedings concluded.
Parsons College Choir of 65 voices presents a concert at the Presbyterian Church this Sunday evening. Repertoire includes Bach, Palestrina, Sowerby, and Wagner selections with violin pieces and a benediction.
Washington March 10. House deficiency appropriation committee members told President Roosevelt that political activity claims against the WPA hurt the Democrats in 1940. They reported Roosevelt would seek the full 150 million dollars cut from February to June 30, a move likely to face strong opposition in Congress.
Des Moines March 10 May P The house ways and means committee recommended a bill to tax five cents on every theater ticket sold for bank night. Rep. William Judd Republican Clinton introduced the measure. The committee also urged passage of a bill requiring retailers to remit all sales tax collected rather than only two percent of gross receipts.
Three Sioux City men Charles Hall Leonard Smothers and Lyle Hammatt were arrested and held without bond after six morphine packages were found in bed coverings of a hotel room here. They face federal narcotics charges linked to the robbery of F. L. Heese near Dakota City Nebraska. Heese identified the trio as the bandits who took $200 after withdrawing funds from a Sioux City bank.
Willard McGaffney resumed duties at the Pleely Wig Ely store this morning after a brief illness keeping him away from work for several days.
A petition was filed with the court clerk and a divorce decree was signed by Judge G E Newell. Grounds stated for the divorce include cruel and inhuman treatment.
Kay Stana a nineteen year old man perched 100 feet above traffic on a Cleveland bridge demanding a job. He read and relaxed on the span while a reporter and camera crew observed. His friend Sidney Ormour, 18, said Stana disclosed the plan two weeks earlier.
