Zangara was sentenced to death in the electric chair for the murder of Mayor Anton J. Cermak of Chicago. Judge Thompson ordered the sentence read at 10:15 AM and Zangara shouted questions as the verdict was delivered. He may be executed after five days in prison.
Rural teachers from Washington County are invited to a study center at the courthouse starting 9 a.m. Miss Clara Wallace of the state education department and Miss Pearl Ritter will lead talks on reading and language with assistance from County Superintendent Mrs. Winnie Palmer. A group of rural pupils from second and fifth grades will participate in demonstrations. The county spelling contest was postponed to March 11 due to the study center. March 18 will feature primary spellers in the morning and town and rural competitions in the afternoon to select a representative for the state spelling bee on May 6.

Charles City March 16. Three inmates escaped last night from Floyd county jail. The escapees are Lawrence Shepler and Don and Vernon McMangle, all arrested in a recent Floyd robbery.
Washington March 16 representatives of leading farm organizations met with Secretary of Agriculture H A Wallace in a secret conference to outline an agriculture relief program for the current extra session of congress. Economists are reported to have drafted a measure to regulate this year's crop and stabilize farm prices with permanent relief and higher prices. Wallace said the final draft would likely include the farm allotment plan previously before congress.
Washington county was granted a 2000 relief loan by the Reconstruction Finance Corp. A committee led by Frank Sage will select relief projects to employ unemployed residents. The group includes Supervisor Ch BF Brown, Mrs. Orville Elder, Mrs. Harry Dye, L. E. Dunlap, J. B. Crail, A. J. Johnson of Brighton, William Hesselachwerdt of Kalona, and William Griffin of Riverside. The meeting will decide projects and expected wages.

The Tri County Osteopathic association met at Hotel Muscatine with about forty attendees. A 7:00 dinner followed by a folk dance program. Dr Reeves spoke on Hospital Experience, and Dr Lowry gave a lecture and foot technique demonstration. Dr McWilliams presided.
