Iowa passes emergency measure halting all insurance transactions until March 1 1925 or until the governor ends the emergency. The bill, rushed through the legislature, was signed by Lt. Gov N G Kraschel and goes into effect on publication.
Funeral services for Patricia Ann Smith were conducted yesterday afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home. Rev. E. J. Shook of Ainsworth led the service with pallbearers Delbert Maxwell Harold Pearson Walter Hendrickson and Donald Smith. Burial followed in Crawfordsville cemetery.
Giurisippe Zangara pleaded guilty to first degree murder in Dade County Court and was ordered to stand trial for the penalty. He was accused of killing Mayor Anton J. Cermak of Chicago on February 15 when a bullet struck him while aimed at President Roosevelt.
A brief cold wave swept into Iowa with the coldest reading eight degrees above zero at Charles City. Temperatures were forecast to dip to five above in the north and eight in the south tonight, with most of the wave expected to dissipate by tomorrow.
W J Roudabush county farm bureau agent reports farmers can obtain government crop loans for 1933. He provides a circular from the Secretary of Agriculture detailing security requirements first lien on crops, possible acreage reductions, loan limits up to 2300 dollars, minimum 25 dollars, multiples of 5, and conditions on seed use, home garden planting, and feed crops. Loans exclude machinery or livestock purchases and restrict delinquent borrowers.

Bethel Congregation elected George W. Reed president at the annual church dinner and congregational meeting held March 8. C F Letts named Sunday school superintendent, with a slate of officers for the congregation and Sunday school including Boyd Foster, Grace Shaw, Charles Rothilisberger, Fred Shaw, Birdell Walker, Ray Lambert, Kay Lambert, W H Parker, and J W Meyer. Sunday school officers also listed Maurice Meyer, Ernest Gideon, Carl Rothlisberger, Stanley Foster, Gladys Wolfe, Jane Rothlisberger, and ushers Ernest Meyer, Ernest Gideon, Stanley Foster. Captain O J Brown of Troop F 113th Cavalry today received 1152 in drill pay for the last three months to be distributed among troopers. A special meeting will grant the checks, though cashing may be delayed until banks reopen. Troop F voters decided to fund their banquet via individual contributions, each man giving fifty cents. Troop F also won this year’s rifle shooting contest among eight cavalry troops, leading Troop K by a margin, with scores pending from the state championship shoot. The Washington team roster includes Captain Brown and several noncommissioned officers, with First Lieutenant Waller G Conn er as team captain.
Kansas City stock yards shut for the rest of the week. Reopening on Monday depends on banking developments.
In Des Moines Lieut. Gov. Kraschel says Iowa banks will stay closed until at least part of the 40 million in outside depositories is liquid. He notes 1.5 million of Iowa deposits under stabilization law became preferred in Chicago banks to flow to the federal reserve. Washington talks and a Woodin-tweaked rule allow Fed banks to receive Iowa funds, which had been blocked by a moratorium. The Dubuque National Bank was the only one in the state open besides making change.
Nine teams enter the southeastern Iowa girls basketball sectional with one first round game at 2 pm Cotter versus Grandview. Wyman plays Mt Union at 3 pm Yarmouth vs Olds at 4 pm Hillsboro meets Crawfordsville at 7 30 pm Mediapolis faces the Cotter Grandview winner at 8 30 pm Friday semis and the championship Saturday at 8 30 with a consolation at 7 30 Large fan delegations are expected as Tri County standings conclude the regular season.
The Community party caucus at city hall nominated Mayor John W. Applegate for re election and listed candidates for assessor treasurer commissioner and council seats. Nominations close Saturday evening with filings at the city clerk's office amid a large turnout.
W L Rukgaber announced the opening of his new hardware store for Saturday March 11 in Washington. He is joined by Les Gilmore and Carl Hartmann with Mrs Rukgaber helping in field duties. The sponsors include the Peoples Citizens and Community parties with Carl Roberts running as an independent mayoral candidate.
President Roosevelt seeks wide plenary powers to open sound banks immediately and expand currency. Senate and House prepare emergency legislation and vow midnight sessions to advance the banking bill, with Rainey elected House speaker and Kvate backed by farm labor reps.
Wilthrop W. Aldrich chairman of Chase National proposed a reform program to break financial overlords in New York. The plan would dissolve boards of major banks and separate commercial and investment banking, aligning Rockefeller interests against Morgan and other banks.
Mrs. George Maxwell has returned from Sioux City where she had been visiting her daughter Mrs. Leroy Tripp.
