Muscatine city election results show Republicans sweeping office. Councilmen elected were LeRoy Thomas Elwer Jaebner William Boldt and Tomas Dilley. I. V. Howenstein was unopposed for engineer. Louis Borgstadt reelected weighmaster. Robert K. Stohr named city attorney and Harold H. Hansen city recorder. Charles McGill re-elected street commissioner by 20 vote margin.
Lucy surprises and proud as she lays an egg weighing 7% ounces in Peck chicken house. Raymond Peck believes it may qualify for a championship. The egg measures 7% inches around the long axis and 742 inches around the short way, and its shape is not typical for an egg.

Teeters of the State University of Iowa pharmacy school and renowned toxicologist will address the state senate Thursday at 11 a.m. He was invited to explain two pharmacy committee bills licensing drugstores at 5 a year and restricting sale of an enlarged poisons list to registered pharmacists.
Signs banning visitors appeared at Sioux City hospitals and children’s institutions as influenza cases rose. Two thousand school children were absent yet officials kept schools open, noting discharged children faced no extra restrictions and could still contact others.
Fruit growers are invited to a meeting and demonstration led by Dr. B S Edgecombe, a fruit specialist from Ames extension service. In Des Moines on March 8 a Republican Democratic coalition failed to defeat the state department of public safety bill. An alternate plan to create a separate motor vehicle department was rejected 27 to 15. The House approved a cigarette bootlegging bill 92 to 5, sending it to the Senate for concurrence. it would raise $800,000 to $1,000,000 yearly by requiring manufacturers and distributors to affix two cent state tax stamps.
A joint house and senate committee on public lands and buildings unanimously recommended construction of a new 1.5 million dollar state office building on the State capitol grounds. If plans favored by the group materialize, construction could begin at an early date.
Three new Iowa national guard units authorized by the war department will be located at Sioux City Des Moines and Burlington Adj Gen Charlies H Grahl announced today Signal Troop 24th Cavalry at Sioux City headquarters troop 57th cavalry brigade at Des Moines and the service company 136th medical regi ment at Burlington
The Dougherty building on the second floor has been almost fully redecorated under Van De Herman and his crew. The interior now features taupe upper walls brown two tone lower walls ivory and light green ceiling with brown trim. A large council room recreation room kitchen and small lobby were refreshed with new furnishings draperies shades and wall decorations enhancing the space.
Shirley Deane Enfield, nearly five months old, suffocated in a crib in the room shared with her parents Mr and Mrs Dean Enfield at the Anderson hotel on South Marion. The mother found the infant face down on a pillow about an hour after a feeding. Dr W S Kyle, county coroner, ruled no inquest needed. Funeral planned Thursday at Peterseim funeral home Kalona with burial in Kalona cemetery. Father works at an oil station in Washington. mother formerly Kathleen Cherle of Richland.
The Leon Beatty American Legion post will hold its next meeting on March 15 instead of March 21 to observe the Legion anniversary tied to its Paris founding date. Tom Brookhart will speak on early Legion history, and a committee was formed to select three local boys for the annual boys state camp next summer. The post also decided to sponsor Legion Baseball.
Secretary of Commerce Harry L. Hopkins outlines steps to implement a business government cooperation program. He predicts national income will rise six to eight billion dollars this year compared with 1938. He cites tax adjustments rail and utilities disputes and labor peace as key points from his Des Moines speech. Hopkins says he and Undersecretary John W. Hanes discussed tax law changes and favor a single flat corporate tax.
The flag last seen in Alabama in 1864 is brought back by a small color guard of three Yankees and three Lowans. Civil War veteran Thomas J. Noll, 94, held the banner as Iowa officials recount service in three wars. Iowa lawmakers approved 250 dollars to send the flag to Montgomery for Governor Dixon to receive at noon tomorrow.
Iowa lawmakers authorize return of Alabama secession flag after long display in the Iowa Historical Museum. An escort led by Sen. B C Whitehill Rep James V Lucas and T J Noll will present the flag to the Alabama legislature, with $250 allocated for the escort.

WSUI will broadcast all District 1 high school tournament games from the University of Iowa field house starting Wednesday at 6 p.m. Iowa student announcers led by Bill Seller and Dick Bowlin will describe fourteen contests with specific pairings and broadcast times across Class A and Class B matchups through Saturday finals.
Thirteen members of Company D Fiftieth Iowa Volunteer Infantry who served in the Seventh Army Corps under General Fitzhugh Lee reunited in Los Angeles on March 8. Stanley Miller organized the gathering at the Biltmore hotel with patriotic decor, programs serving as place cards, and cherry log ice cream with a hatchet motif. The group shared stories since muster out, noting many had not seen each other for forty years, and recalled both humorous and sad experiences including one member, Lislie Moreheus, who also served in World War I.
INDIANOLA A Simpson guard Burtis Frey wore a pedometer to measure his likely distance run in two games. In 26 minutes he covered just over four miles, and in 39 minutes he logged four and a quarter miles, about a mile every nine minutes while handling, guarding, and scoring.
Five year old Junior Simpson, son of Karl and wife, has received his 69th blood transfusion in a year to combat a kidney ailment. He has been given more than five gallons of blood. His father, Mount Vernon telephone exchange manager, donated two gallons. A local blood bank formed by friends supports the effort and donations may be traded for compatible types. Junior sleeps about 14 hours daily.
Nationalist radio at Burgos claimed a major offensive against Madrid was imminent with tanks artillery trucks and troops massed on the front. In Madrid Republic troops crushed a communist revolt and took action against mutineers opposing the peace plan of the defense council.
Holstein breeders from 11 southeastern Iowa counties meet next Tuesday at 1 PM in the G A R room of the courthouse in Washington. Fay Barney of Fairfield is chairman with D G Yoder of Wellman as secretary treasurer and Chet Height of Winfield and Harry Kelgar as committeemen. The gathering aims to elect officers for the coming year and finalize details for the annual show set for June 15 with Glen Householder, fieldman for the American Holstein Friesian association, serving as judge.
Two appeals filed today at the Iowa Supreme Court challenge Washington county convictions. Laird Hawking seeks relief from a three month sentence after a driving while intoxicated verdict following a Oct 29 1938 arrest by a state patrolman. William Crandall appeals an eight month sentence for assault with both motions for new trials denied by Judge J G Patterson.
Gerald Mark of Adel joins the Piggly Wiggly meat department after leaving United Food stores. He and his wife Mrs Mark and their five year old son plan to move into the Trojovsky apartment at 803 Booth Second Avenue next week. They attend the Methodist church and he is a graduate of the Lembe Sign school in Minneapolis.
