Dr and Mrs George C W Hickelberg of Fairbank celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in University hospital Iowa City. Mrs Hickelberg spent the day with her husband the dentist who is ill in the hospital.
A two year old heifer consigned by Carl A. Henkle of Mason City brought 440 dollars to top the females in the Iowa state sale of purebred Shorthorns in Des Moines. Sun A Bar farms of Grain Valley Missouri purchased the top animal. The 26 females sold averaged 225 dollars each, signaling strong interest in beef cattle per R W Hagie of Clarion vice president of the Iowa Shorthorn Purebreeders association.
Fire crews at the federal building in Des Moines improvise heat by burning old boxes and cardboard cartons as coal shipments are delayed. Assistant custodian M. Nelson says the coal supply turned slack after a prior water-damaged fire and the monthly delivery did not arrive, so they use alternate materials to heat the building.
Clarence Fisk, 43, of Bloomfield, was held on a reckless driving charge after his stock truck struck 10 parked cars and a telephone pole, causing about $1,000 in damage. Fisk said there must have been something wrong with the steering wheel.
Representative Thomas Martin said there is a chance to secure funding for the Coralville dam in the next fiscal year. After a House appropriations panel rejected a 25 million dollar construction proposal, some believed funds were blocked, but Martin noted the civil functions appropriation bill includes a fund for new construction projects.
Victoria A Johnson and other heirs sue Florence Balter Wood executor, claiming 60000 for business services rendered by W H Johnson over 40 years. Dr Wood left 150000 plus four Harrison county farms and J C Wood Drug Co interest. Logan Victor Johnson says his father spent decades attending to Wood’s interests, citing a diary acknowledgment.
St Edgecombe extension horticulturist warns Iowa fruit growers after snow damage from rabbits. He reports widespread harm to apple trees wild shrubs raspberry bushes and grapevines statewide. Many orchardists are poisoning rabbits.
In Black Hawk county a flurry of land deals saw ten farms totaling about 1400 acres change hands near Waterloo. A 200 acre parcel brought 198000 with a mortgage lien of 11000. Another 84 acre farm sold for 14062 91 with 8500 in stamps and a 5662 91 mortgage assumed. A third tract of 70 acres near Cedar Park brought an indicated 7500.
In Des Moines March 6 UP the Republican Party retained Iowa's sixth district seat as Robert K Goodwin defeated Byron Alley in a special election. Complete unofficial returns: Goodwin 29385, Allen 28889, independent William Klein 394. Goodwin won all counties except Polk. The contest filled the unexpired term of C Dowell who died February 4 after 23 years in the seat. Rural voting was light due to muddy roads.
Minority Leader Joseph Martin said the Iowa sixth district results show strong Republican support and point to a large gain in House seats this fall. He cited Iowa and Ohio early returns as evidence that Republicans will win a decisive majority.
In Des Moines Goodwin received 61.2 percent of the vote with Allen at 38.8 percent based on nearly complete returns. Goodwin led by 4,343 votes in Des Moines precincts and carried 36 Polk county rural precincts by 477. The countywide margin and support from Dallas Madison Story and Warren counties sealed his district victory. Des Moines urban split was 58.7 percent for Goodwin and 41.4 for Allen. Roosevelt won Des Moines in 1936 by 8,750 votes.
In Cedar Rapids on March 6 two state highway patrolmen raced through the night on an errand of mercy to save the life of Russell Sheppard a Manchester truck driver. His hand was badly crushed yesterday when caught between.
Dr. Nicholas R. Doman, Hungary native, warns Central Europe’s linguistic and racial mix fuels unrest and frontiers. He critiques postwar carving, outlines German influence, and proposes a democratic monarchy united state of Central Europe with outside rulers to ensure geographic and economic cohesion.
Thomas E. Dewey campaigned in the agricultural midwest saying youth and inexperience hurt his presidential bid. He spoke to about 8,000 at the University of Nebraska Coliseum and planned to outline national farm policy via radio at 8:30 p.m. He defended his record as a prosecutor against critics calling him too young for major office.
An infection raised a dangerous fever when a truck struck a wall. A serum from the state health department in Des Moines was given to Charles Wood, who drove it to Grinnell and handed it to Adolf Hallgreen for the final leg to Cedar Rapids.
Betty Stewart sustained injuries yesterday morning in a northeast automobile collision. Details on severity and location were not released.
SHENANDOAH Pa March 6 New settling added to the hazards of this anthracite city as two new danger spots were revealed in sections not yet affected by Monday's cave in. Widening fissures raise fears buildings may collapse and a building near collapse was roped off after inspection. Mining experts warn settling may continue for six months as two more cages threaten other sections of the town of 21000.
The Journal misreported the accident details stating Betty Washington was involved. Information from Cloyce Stewart shows Beulah Stewart was driving, and neither Betty nor Beulah sustained serious injuries.
In Lausanne on March 1 Sumner Welles refused to say if his European fact finding tour would influence President Roosevelt's decision on seeking a third term. He dodged questions, noting information from Rome and Berlin remained in tight compartments and would not be shared with Paris or London.
About 130 Odd Fellows attended the Wellman lodge meeting last evening as the initiatory degree was conferred. Thirty members came from Wellman and several from Kegia. Floyd Murdock led the ceremony and J. M. White spoke on Odd Fellowship. Refreshments followed served by Earl Nicola Roy Brobsat and Ralph Zeck. Covenant lodge plans the third degree at Wellman next Tuesday March 12.
The annual meeting at Lincoln school Thursday 7 30 pm will elect a president three vice presidents secretary and treasurer with a nominating committee reporting candidates. Existing officers include Dr Frank Mahin and Mrs J Fry. Harland Mead will speak. two safety films ordered for viewing.
The garden department of the Fortnightly club announced today that they hope to begin planting soon and proceed with the project by April 1.
The Washington independent school district asks voters on March 11 to approve selling the Centennial Lincoln and Wallace buildings. The district argues two new, modern schools serve all elementary needs and tax increases can be avoided by selling the old sites to cover costs. An appraisal committee would oversee sealed bids and fund the finished buildings.
Legion committee reports three quarters of exhibit space sold for the industrial show to be held March 20 21 and 22 at the Troop F armory. Automobiles tractors and farm implements are nearly gone with about a dozen booths still available. Rodney Arnold and Ed Squire lead the show with plans for a free nightly entertainment program and a minstrel act in cooperation with Hop Shearer.
The Elm Grove beautification project aims to complete planting by Memorial Day week. A blueprint will be on display at the Y M C A between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. for public inspection. Limited memorial trees will be offered for Washington community families to plant in Elm Grove Cemetery with markers provided.

Milwaukee March 6 James Rosselli a shoemaker surrendered at the federal building announcing I am the beer criminal they looking for He posted 200 bond with the United States commissioner for a preliminary hearing set for March 14 He pled ready to surrender and become the first man in 1940 prosecuted for refusing to answer census questions.
William Soboski, 15, a Pleasant Plain Consolidated freshman, died at an Iowa City hospital after six weeks as a postoperative patient following an appendectomy. Survived by father John Soboski of the farm south of Pleasant Plain, two brothers, and one sister. Funeral arrangements by Hoskins funeral home Brighton.
Yesterday afternoon the complaint alleged the youths stole gasoline from a parked car at Brighton. Attorney L. J. Kehoe spoke for them and they were ordered to pay nominal fines of one dollar each plus costs.
