Waterloo Iowa The $100 Liberty bond lost 17 years ago in Commercial National Bank still awaits its owner. Receiver Joe Utterback filed notice that the bond may be taken into possession by the receivership if the owner does not appear.
Samuel G. Bronner, a Democrat, was reelected mayor in Muscatine. Four Republican aldermen—Grover Lawrence, Albert Schmidt, Walter Pilgram, and Fred Lange—were returned to office.
Davenport Mississippi river boats including the ice steamer Alexander MacKenzie the largest towboat on the upper river are being equipped with two way radio systems this season.
Newton Dexter Nygaard a 28 year old Swift and Co salesman entered a local telegraph office and after a large yawn his jaws locked. He awoke at Skiff hospital where doctors reset his jaw and he stayed for the night for observation.
Probate of the will of Dr. O. W. Esslinger, Cedar Rapids dentist, who died by his own hand at a San Antonio camp on February 17, leaves his widow $200 monthly as long as she remains unmarried, and $100 monthly to his parents J. G. Esslinger and Mae Esslinger. The estate value is not disclosed.
Three high school boys ages 16 and 17 confessed to helping rob the Harry Groat beer parlor in Indianola Deputy Sheriff Emerson Cummings said. They charged James O Grady 38 a farm hand talked them into it and accompanied them. O Grady jailed on a $1000 bond for breaking and entering.
Ames Iowa State college reports fiscal year ended June 30 1989 with sources of revenue including state appropriations 62.9 cents federal 20.8 cents student fees 15.5 cents sales 9.2 cents and gifts and endowments 1.6 cents. Business manager H C Gregg notes total income 5 295 215 versus expenditures 5 154 091 leaving a balance of 141 128.
Iowa City editors report six contestants remain in the drive for the Mecca ball co ed queen at the University of Iowa. Finalists listed include Agnes Kane Shenandoah Aliee McGowan Marion Virginia Craven Sioux City Dorothy Brett Marquette Mich Lois Lippord Wauwatosa Wis and Corinne Sleater Dee Moin-8.
Iowa City Iowa. The University of Iowa basketball team selects Tommy Line a senior from Burlington as honorary captain for the 1939 40 season. During the season a captain is named by Coach Rollie Williams before each game Vic Seigel a Davenport sophomore is elected to captain next year team.
Washington county prepares for a record basketball event with 208 players from 23 towns arriving for the Gold Medal tournament. Four local teams join 22 visiting squads in a major five night series starting Wednesday, as residents pledge a royal welcome.
Ministers from Washington churches announce the annual pre Easter meetings hosted by Protestant congregations. The event runs Monday March 18 to Friday March 22 at 7 30 pm except Thursday, with each evening featuring a different church choir and devotional leader. The final service is Friday at 2 pm with the United Presbyterian choir.
Ridnour Capp wrestled an oil heater from a henhouse fire at Perry and pitched it into a snowbank. Several hundred chickens were saved as the blaze was contained.
Washington city council moves to improve street lighting around the new Stewart and Lincoln grade schools and likely near the high school. A survey will assess needs and feasibility, with Councilman Will Dupuis leading the light committee. The council also voted a 25 dollar gift toward holiday lighting funded by the Chamber of Commerce for several years.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled the state can seize slot machines and punch boards as gambling devices without proving they will be used for gambling. The decision affirms the Black Hawk district court against Waterloo's C. C. Fouts from the April 7, 1938 raid. Attorney General Fred Everett calls it a victory and a simplification for enforcing gambling laws.
Sunday night marked the end of this year’s Happy Hour with a third annual Bible reading contest. Winners were Eleanor Keagy first Mary Heilman second and Faye Holland third.
The city council will meet twice monthly in spring and summer and early fall, replacing the prior monthly schedule used during cold weather. Iowa Southern Utilities has worked on repairing gas mains leaks causing outages, with regular reports received and bills approved.
After a meeting with Mayor R L Lytle and Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes, plans to clean mud from business pavements proceed. The mud will be removed when thawed using fire hose or flusher, Holmes says the task will be done as soon as conditions allow.
LeRoy Pratt district manager says the tall coin division shows a 406 percent rise in new business for January and February 1940 versus 1939. Local sales are up about 400 percent. The firm plans its international convention in Oakland California.
Cars driven by Earl Booth and Beulan Stewart collided at North Second avenue and East Seventh street near the American Pearl Button factory about 8 15 this morning. Booth had a cut above the eye Stewart and her sister Esther were bruised and shaken. Stewart’s car turned on its side and damage was estimated between 50 and 160 dollars. Gardner, who rode with the Stewarts, escaped injury.
Passersby reported a large spark from the Fulton chimney at the Howard Fulton residence on East Main Street last night. Firefighters responded but found no fire and no damage. The incident occurred in August of this year.
Oliver P Essley of a farm southwest of Wellman died last evening at University hospital Iowa City from pneumonia after four years of poor health. Funeral at Jones funeral home Thursday 10:30 a m conducted by Dr R C Keagy with Elm Grove Cemetery burial. He born June 23 1883 in Jackson township married Belva Doles Sept 15 1914. Survived by wife foster daughter Mary two sisters Estella Ranck and Esther Essley and many nieces and nephews. brother Roy Essley died in 1916.
Census takers will survey Washington county farmers for the 1840 census. County Agent J. W. Chandler says sample farm census blanks are ready at the county extension office to show questions. E. K. Bliss of Iowa State College ext service notes the effort involves all citizens and covers farming, irrigation, drainage, population, mines, quarries and business. Information remains confidential and unused for other purposes.
Helsinki reports say Russian army attempts to cross the Gulf of Finland west of Viipuri were repulsed. Desperate fighting continues at the Mannerheim line western end for Viipuri. Moscow claimed encirclement efforts and landings on the bay’s west side, while Finnish forces waged heavy defense on three sides of the city.
London reports Britain detained two Italian cargo ships and threatened seizure of German coal sent to Italy, escalating tensions after Mussolini’s government protested the Allied blockade. Ronald Cross announced in the House of Commons that coal shipments from Germany to Italy via Holland have ceased.
Frank Frazier stated several inquiries have reached him about a possible move by the Frazier & Campbell print shop. He notes that partner Clifford Campbell placed a want ad for rooms to rent, but the firm remains well settled in the basement of the new Dougall restaurant building with no plans to relocate.
Instrumental soloists chosen to represent Washington high school at the pre state music contest the last weekend in April were selected at a home contest in Sigourney. Winners include Carolyn Strong flute Dorothy Turner clarinet Frances Porter bassoon Geneva Palmer Eugene Duglap Bob McLaughlin Charles Sutton Charles Mayo Milg Steele Bill Arnold and the snare drum. Small groups also judged include clarinet quartet flute quartet woodwind quartet brass sextet and brass octet. Local tryouts for vocal soloists will follow.
Lyle Fuller twenty one and Hubert Rich eighteen, both of Brighton, were questioned by Sheriff M Putnam today over a gasoline theft from a parked car in Brighton. They were jailed last night and expected to be arraigned in justice court this afternoon.
