Marvin Chap man, a freshman at the University of Iowa, was judged the highest ranking individual debater at the invitational intercollegiate forensic tournament held in Iowa City.
Lloyd Stokes of Shenandoah escaped with bruises after his truck was wrecked in the Shenandoah Grain and Coal yard when a Wabash switch engine struck it. He congratulated himself on being alive amid the collision.
Marie Devick sustained a scalp laceration and a bruised knee after stepping from a city bus into the path of a car driven by Darwin Kil lean of State Center. Gwen dolyn Adkin, Devick’s companion, was bruised.
Announcement lists First Federal State Bank acquiring assets and assuming deposit liabilities of University State Bank. Officials say the sale advances the orderly liquidation of the estate of the late R. A. Crawford in Des Moines.
Verne Larson of Fairfield suffered leg injuries and was hospitalized after a meat truck driven by Earl Smith of Muscatine struck him on Highway 61 east of the city as Larson repaired a tire on his car.

Mr and Mrs Earl Anderson both about 53 suffered minor injuries when a wheel came off their car east of West Liberty. The machine struck a telephone pole and rolled into a ditch. He sustained facial cuts and she was in shock. They were bound for Illinois for the weekend.
Dubuque resident James F. Coffee longtime stage manager in local theaters for nearly 50 years died at his daughter's home. He began as a stagehand at age 18 in the Grand Opera house and spent a lifetime backstage meeting hundreds of stage celebrities.

A republican council led by Gen Sigismundo Casado ousted Negrin and invited peace terms acceptable to all Spaniards. Nationalist circles hailed the move as breaking Moscow influence and hoped for immediate pacification. Gen Jose Miaja arrived in Madrid and conferred with council members about a new peace framework.
Miss Mollie Conner Cherry, born February 29 1868 in Washington county, died in Oklahoma City where she had lived since moving there about thirty years ago. She was a Presbyterian and had many friends in her former community. Funeral services and burial will be held in Oklahoma City on Tuesday morning March 7.

Rosetta Whitaker born October 10 1854 in Arkansas County Illinois married W H Wilson in 1871 at Grandview and later to William Alloway in 1906. She lived in Columbus Junction since 1906 and died at her home after a long illness. Funeral is Wednesday at 2:30 at Stephens funeral home with burial in Columbus City cemetery. She leaves two sons Jay C Wilson Denver and James Wilson Fredonia, two daughters Maude Mize Columbus Junction and Pearl Stearns Burlington, 16 grandchildren 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Her first husband William Wilson died February 13 1913. She was a Christian Church member and of the Women’s Relief Corps.
John Bales of Brighton died at Washington County Hospital at 2 am after a year of poor health. Born June 16, 1874 in Newton Hamilton Pennsylvania, he lived on the Jefferson county farm south of Brighton since childhood and never married. He was the last of his family. funeral arrangements are pending with services likely Wednesday.
Report notes a ceremony is planned for next Sunday, information cited as coming from well informed quarters today.
Gandhi on his fourth day of fasting in Rajkot lay too weak to sit up without dizziness. Doctors fear possible unconsciousness as riots raged nearby with 45 killed and 200 wounded. He was advised to halt the fast but insisted, speaking cheerfully to visitors while his heart and blood pressure showed alarming decline.
City police Saturday night arrested Elmer Shalla on operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace J Fk Bovee, waived preliminary hearing and was bound over to the grand jury on $1,000 bond. He expected to furnish the bonds today.
Jean Atchison was elected judge Bob Downing prosecuting attorney and Bonnie Jean Simpson clerk of the bicycle court for the Bicycle Battalion sponsored by the Washington County Safety Council. They will serve until the close of the school year early in June overseeing cases against members for violations of the bicycle riding code.
Legislative action closes today as the house adopts senate amendments to a measure fixing expenditures of five state departments under legislative control. The agencies on the assessment and review board fund the administration, highway, commerce, motor vehicle, and code editor roles. they will now be financed by fees and income with annual budget requests to the legislature and all income returned to the general fund.
Washington March 6 Col Edwin M Watson long time White House military aide will move to a new role as secretary to President Roosevelt in a reshuffle. Watson has served six years as aide and will take on duties as counselor to the President along with the secretary post.

Des Moines reports a new winter touch with light snow over the weekend while temperatures drop. Two to eight inches fell yesterday in Iowa, with melt underway as sun returns. Washington saw a light snow and a drop in temperature, high 66 and low 15 last night, total February moisture 1.55 inches across eight days.
James A. Arnold 75 died at 8 45 this morning at his home 714 East Jefferson street after two years of illness and months bedfast. Services are set for Wednesday at 10 50 at Jones Funeral Home with Rev W J Stevens. burial in Elm Grove. He was born March 24 1863 in Richmond son of Willis and Artimesa Arnold. married Hattie Zook June 19 1889. He and his wife farmed in Crawfordsville Winfield and Missouri before moving to Washington 25 years ago. survived by wife two daughters two sons six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
April fills the vacancy created by James Roosevelt's resignation. Watson, with 83 years of army service, will be nominated this week to brigadier general and assume the rank March 31.
Detroit March 6. The United Automobile Workers of America convention voted unanimously to bar from union membership a member identified as D. The action was taken during the convention proceedings as part of disciplinary measures within the union.
President Roosevelt told his legislative leaders he will ask within a week for an extra 150 million dollars to fund WPA relief through the spring and into the new fiscal year starting July 1. The request, to be sent as a deficiency estimate to the House Appropriations Committee, follows Congress trimming a prior request.
Funeral services were held at Riverside Methodist church for Anna Chihak 77 who died in Iowa City. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Surviving are three daughters, six grandchildren and a brother. She was born October 2 1861 and lived most of her life in Riverside with winters in Marengo and Iowa City.
Dwight Simerman of Keota begins work as a salesman for Shellane gas stores and large appliances at Peters Hardware. He will travel the territory and split time in the store. After twelve years at Cham furniture in Keota, he plans to relocate here this spring.
