The House labor committee voted unanimously to report favorably the Connery thirty hour week bill. It sets a thirty hour week across industries with emergency exemptions and limits wage adjustments. The administration promotes shorter hours amid NRA pleas, while opposition grows in Congress.
The fifth year of Happy Hour services closed Sunday night during the twelfth Meeting of 10SG-84. About 75 attendees included visitors from Ainsworth. Vera Sturmman Hayden Hughes gave declamatory readings. Thelda Tracy sang with her own accompaniment, Velda Parcell and Kathryn Little staged a play Jesus Teaching Us to Pray. Burlington and Winfield have byes. Friday at 7:30 Winfield faces the Washington-Oskaloosa winner and 8:30 Burlington plays the Centerville-Grinnell winner.

A small hole burned in the kitchen floor behind the stove at the Schirmer residence on East Jefferson Street. The family was away. a neighbor reported the alarm. Firefighters extinguished the fire with minor damage and no injuries.
In Colfax Iowa two Newton men Charles Meyers and Rex Meyers died in a slate fall at Jas per County Coal mine. Rex Meyers died en route to hospital while Charles Meyers died at the scene. Miners in a nearby shaft heard the collapse and tried to reach them but were blocked by debris.
Jacques Quilicchini of Plano near Sartene receives the Legion of Honor for his France service in 1851 and 1859. He was wounded at Magenta and lives with his two sons, ages 68 and 6, in the Corsican hamlet.
A 25 to 30 piece high school band under MiUl burn McKay will play during YMCA basketball tournament sessions Thursday and Friday. Games start at 7 PM with Washington vs Osage and Ottumwa vs Muscatine at 8 16 PM. Sigourney Sizzlers from Oskaloosa YMCA face Burlington at 9 30 PM. Season tickets priced five for 35 cents are on sale at four Washington drug stores.
Henry Little guided his Morning Sun freshmen in a four team tournament with Wapello Morning Sun Winfield and Washington. Washington lost to Wapello 22 to 10 as Wapello led early then rallied. Morning Sun and Wapello were to meet for the championship with Washington third and Winfield fourth.
Washington county board of supervisors set March 20 to begin proceedings for issuing 272000 in primary road refunding bonds. The aim is to retire and refund as of May 1 1934, at lower interest, per Iowa Highway Commission refinancing plan. Sealed bids due March 20 at the county treasurer’s office for sale to the highest bidder.
