First notices showed substantial refunding of Iowa county primary road bonds. Blackhawk county announced a May 1 refunding of 560000, with others to follow by May 15 to May 1. Refunding will be at 0.5 to 1.0 percentage point lower than the current 4 to 5 percent, saving large sums for counties.
Captain Jay Brown announces Troop F members will meet at the city hall this evening to receive pay checks totaling about $61. The locality pays roughly $15,000 yearly from this source, a valued community asset. Find Indian Relics in South Egremont Massachusetts. James McGilly and Melvin Hutt were working on Mt. Washington road when a rock overturned found 14 Indian spear points believed to be from Colonial days.
Walter S. Harvey and Floyd Maxwell announce the opening of Farmers' Sales & Service offering a full line of John Deere farm equipment. The store will repurpose the Sidney Smith garage on Jackson Street near the square and include a service department. Both owners bring extensive experience from the George W. Stewart store.
The Nicholson cafe opens for business tomorrow in the building formerly Mangold's garage north of the Methodist church on North Marion avenue. Free coffee with any purchase on opening day is offered. Owner George Nicholson is assisted by Merle Proudfit, his brother-in-law.
Washington and Oskaloosa high schools prepare for the district tourney with workouts and scrimmages. Oskaloosa, led by Floyd De Heeretant, faces questions after midseason roster changes while Washington shows improved form.
In Beverly Hills a Cal. speaker notes President Roosevelt’s radio address aired at 8 am and reflects on the difference between reading a speech and hearing it live. The speaker jokes about the king of the air and expresses sympathy for a woman sheriff inunda.
Washington officials and Better Washington club members toured several suggested locations for a proposed airport. The committee may name multiple viable sites and, if approved, apply for an airport license with a Des Moines engineer to decide the best site. The project would use CWA funds if a suitable rental is found.
The Washington Y M C A basketball team defeated Sigourney 49 to 22 in a warmup game before the state tournament. Wells led with seven field goals as Sigourney played without Crane who starred in their previous meeting.
Josephine McElhinney is recuperating satisfactorily from an appendicitis operation. She is well enough that her nurse Mrs Jack Reid left last night.
Waterloo March 7 Colflesh United States district attorney today began his bid for the Republican nomination for governor. He criticized former Governor Dan Turner for personal attacks, urging a primary focused on party sentiment and issues rather than personalities. Colflesh noted past support for Turner in 1932 and said the party is stronger than any one individual. He pledged no personal quarrel and said supporters may differ on issues but will unite in November.
Clarence Knutson of Clear Lake announces candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor, citing the gross income tax issue. A hardware merchant, he previously served in the Iowa General Assembly and held local office, with leadership in several fraternal and business groups.
Sam Cahoon of Crown Point Indiana, 64, once a jail turnkey, was cited for letting John Dillinger escape by entering the exercise yard without locking inmates in cells. He defends his record against Mr Turner in a heated primary campaign, stressing openness and willingness to face issues.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars in Washington announce a March 15 boxing card at the city hall gym featuring youths from Iowa City who advanced in Golden Gloves matches. One wrestling bout pits Leslie Red Beers of Iowa City against Johnny Lewis. Tickets from 50 cents general, 25 cents women and under 16, with reserved ringside seats at 15 cents.

Iowa House votes 63 to 49 to adjourn the legislature Saturday instead of Wednesday as the Senate had planned. Governor Herring argues for prompt adjournment after action on four measures including old age pension and state relief rules.
American Legion posts in Washington County held a joint meeting to finish registering veterans' graves in county cemeteries by Memorial Day. By May 20 the project aims to be complete, with five townships already finished and others progressing.
