Chauncey Fay of Ottumwa was named chairman of the temporary executive committee of the University of Iowa branch of the American Student Union. The committee ordered that all statements from the newly organized group must come from Fay and Fay alone.
Frank Malzahn a 40 year old bachelor from Fredericksburg was found insane after an insanity commission ruled he could not wed Chris Maser’s daughter. An appeal has been filed and will be heard in district court.
An ungrammatical note on a highway stop sign warns hoboes and tramps to stay away from large railroad yards and big cities. It claims disappearances occur annually among hitch hikers and beggars, naming New Jersey New York Delaware Pennsylvania and nearby states as danger zones.
Ethiopian authorities report seven Ethiopians killed as Italian planes drop sixty bombs on a British ambulance camp north of Dessye. A J M Melley telegraphs from Addis Ababa to Geneva describing the attack as the camp, marked by a Red Cross flag, was circled ten times before bombing. Staff escaped injury. second such attack on the northern front.
Charles W. Stephens died in Pawhuska Oklahoma after a long illness following a serious operation two years ago. He was about eighty and is survived by his wife Rose Smouse a sister of Win Smouse and a daughter Mrs Carol Oliphant of Tulsa. He formerly lived here and worked for the Rock Island railway then ran a local grocery and later joined Win Smouse in a real estate business before moving to Joplin Missouri Kansas City and finally Pawhuska. He was remembered as a respected citizen by many local friends.
The County Planning Board schedules the second meeting of the Agricultural Planning Committee in the G A R room at the Court House on Friday March 6 at 10 30 a m The county agent lists members by township and notes each member shall select two counselors from other areas The chairman and vice chairman will be chosen from the committee Recommendations will be sent to the state and may influence upcoming actions.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam spoke to the Y's Men at their weekly dinner, detailing the sheriff's role from historic English tradition to modern duties. New member Robert Lytle was welcomed. a large turnout from Y's Men and colleagues from Washington, Muscatine, and Moline attended, with plans for future gatherings and interclub visits.
A new peace appeal by May or Laguardia was rejected today as violence marked the strike of building service employees. The mayor returned to City Hall at eleven after a dawn peace conference, urging the Realty Advisory Board to accept the union’s offer to arbitrate the issues in dispute.
After two days of talks in City Hall with Mayor LaGuardia present, strike representatives and the Realty Advisory Board failed to reach any accord. The mayor announced the peace efforts had ended in complete failure and warned of possible unrest in the metropolis.

Des Moines reports retreating flood waters in Harrison county as backwater levels drop. Mayor W T Tierney of Missouri Valley says about 150 families remain sheltered, 25 scarlet fever patients among refugees, and about 150 houses damaged with losses running into thousands of dollars.
Leroy Richardson appeared before Justice of the Peace J Ek Bovee and pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He received a thirty day county jail sentence, suspended on good behavior with payment of costs.
Dr H W Stouder extension veterinarian of Iowa State College led a meeting with sheep growers at the courthouse to discuss diseases feeding and management of sheep and lambs. The session aims to start a series in the county to raise knowledge and improve prices for graded lambs in June with another gathering planned soon as bad roads kept several away yesterday.
Des Moines March 5. Roscoe Stewart of Ottumwa appointed by Governor Herring to a state conservation board seat to succeed the late Dr. William C. Boone of Ottumwa. The term runs to 1941.

County Agent William Rondabush presents a spring message on farm issues vital to growers and residents in the corn belt and hog center. The journal reaches 5000 homes and will be read by over twenty thousand people.
The Washington county board of supervisors approved a bond sale of 117000 to refund primary road bonds. Sale set for March 24 at 3 pm. Treas. Marion S. George expects lower interest rates and lively bidding, noting prior refunds and remaining unrefunded balances. Meanwhile a DC petition by Lula B. Cherry claims misinformation on Washington liquor issues.
A moderate cold wave is predicted in northern and eastern Iowa tonight with temperatures possibly dropping to zero or below. Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed forecasts ten degrees below zero in northern counties, with 14 above at Charles City last night. Northwestern counties may feel the cold before tomorrow, aiding flood-fighting efforts after days of thaw.

Chief Claude C. Reister was reelected for his twenty third year as head of the Washington fire department at a banquet and annual election. Assistant chiefs Westphal and Reister, secretary treasurer Meek, and truck drivers Meek and Custer were also chosen along with all subordinate officers. Mayor Lloyd Lytle attended as a guest and Doug Page, an original member from 1883, was honored. The city council’s official approval is expected at the April meeting.

Chester C. Davis AAA administrator urges the house Ways and Means Committee to impose processing taxes for a two year period. The plan would raise about 221.553 million dollars annually and cover commodities benefiting from the new farm program and competitive commodities. More than 30 commodities would be affected.
The Senate Agricultural Committee voted 7 to 8 against overriding President Roosevelt on the $50 million seed loans bill. Chairman Smith of South Carolina and the bill sponsor urged sending the measure back to the Senate for reconsideration.
