California Wine Sales Rise 15.4 Percent in 1971

The Wine Institute reported that California wine sales reached a record 226 million gallons in 1971, up 15.4 percent from 1969 level. Sales grew from 111 million gallons in 1970 to 138 million gallons last year, a 24.5 percent increase.

Ames Democrat urges earlier Iowa district conventions

Ames Democrat Paul Franzenburg urged the Democratic State Central Committee to hold Iowa's March 25 district conventions earlier to avoid 12 hour endurance sessions. He proposed opening with the caucus in late morning or early afternoon to reduce late night work. The county conventions had extended into the next day.

Hiss pension ruling undercuts 1954 act

Crane Co and City eye out of court tax settlement

Crane Co and the City of Washington may settle a 1970 tax dispute with the County Board of Review soon. The case, tied to Crane’s large plant and its tax payments, has stretched over 20 months and involves proposed partial 1971 and 1972 tax payments as a final settlement. Iowa Mobile Homes Face New Fire Safety Rules

Des Moines IDPA reports no statewide safety standards for mobile homes. State Fire Marshal Wilbur Johnson backs a Senate bill to create a mandatory statewide building code with model standards for mobile homes and other factory built structures. The plan includes fire proofing, smoke detectors, and regulated wiring plus reciprocal interstate inspections. Johnson notes overheated wiring and DIY practices as major fire causes, with four deaths in Iowa last year.

Washington High Jaz Band Invited to Montreux Jazz Festival

Washington High School Jazz Band directed by Larry Green received a telephone invitation to perform at the Montreux International Jazz Festival in Switzerland during the second and third weeks of June. Fifteen U S bands were invited this year, based on four judges’ tape evaluations. Fundraising and financing pose the main hurdle, with plans already in motion for a Colorado trip to Estes Park later in the year if Montreux falls through.

Plane crashes into Albany home during snowstorm

Mohawk Airlines Flight 405 with 44 passengers and 3 crew crashed into a white two story home in Albany killing 17 and injuring 36 as pilots attempted to reach Albany Airport 32 miles away. The Rosen family of four survived with injuries while others in the house perished. Authorities from FAA and NTSB opened investigations.

UPI reports Washington plans to grant diplomatic recognition to Bangladesh soon. Officials expect formal recognition before Foreign Secretary Sultan Mohammad Khan arrives in Washington to become ambassador. Pakistan opposes but may accept the move eventually.

Ten Dead as Northwest Floods Strike Oregon and California

A six day northwest rainstorm caused rock slides and flooding across southern Oregon and northern California. Ten people died as vehicles were swept from roads and homes damaged. crews worked amid downed power lines and closed highways. In Oregon’s Klamath Falls area more than 50 homes were damaged, and waterways surged while schools closed.
