Esther Squire, superintendent, reports 1361 admissions and a daily average of 43.5 patients at the Washington County Hospital in 1950. Heaviest day 62 patients on Feb 11, lightest 30 on Aug 24. Births total 511, with five sets of twins. Death rate low. gross 2.2 percent, net 1.29 percent. Average stay 3.3 days. cost per patient per day $1.24 below national average. Salaries take 58.2 cents of every dollar, with other costs allocated to food, housekeeping, maintenance, x ray, and miscellaneous items. Improvements include elevator shaft enclosure, nursery upgrades, new operating light and equipment, and a fire escape project. The hospital renewed its license and thanks donations from community.

George Van Auken Dies at Columbus Junction at 76

George Van Auken about 76 was found dead in bed at his Columbus Junction home this morning. Coroner Dr. J W Pence ruled natural causes. He had lived in the town all his life and was known as Coon Ey e. No near relatives survive. His body was moved to Stephens funeral home pending arrangements. He had recently been in a nursing home in Bra nton before returning home.
