U.S. Marines broke Chinese rear guard resistance and captured Hoengsong without a fight. They moved north with tanks and infantry, killing or routing about 250 Chinese troops and seizing key hills near the road hub. Other UN forces reported gains along a 60 mile front as the offensive resumed.
Mrs H J Gosling and Mrs Lee Hunt of Ainworth along with Ethel Oswalt of Keota were seen shopping in Washington this morning.

Jacob G Shrader 74 of Washington died at home at 1 55 am after a stroke and prolonged illness. Funeral services are Sunday March 4 at 2 20 pm at Jones funeral home with Rev T C Polk. burial Pleasant Hill cemetery. He was born December 15 1876 southeast of Washington. survived by wife Hattie Hillhouse daughter Cecil Horton granddaughter two sisters Sadee McAvoy Ida Miller and brother Phil. one son predeceased him.
Don McClure urged all Junior Chamber of Commerce members to attend Monday night’s meeting at The Pines at 7 o'clock. He said several important business matters must be discussed.
Washington based Booth and Horak shoe store completes remodeling with new paint wallpaper refreshed floors restored chairs and lighting fixtures. A full length mirror is added at the rear and counter and office space reconfigured for more space. The store enters its third year under current management.
Mrs. J. A. Stump died at 22114 South Avenue D after a brief illness. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2 PM at the Powell funeral home in Wellman with burial in the cemetery. She lived many years in Wellman and moved to Washington 18 months ago, survived by three daughters and one son: Mrs. Ralph A. Miller of Springfield Oregon, Mrs. Wayne Fisher of Wellman, Mrs. Martial E. Crossett of Washington, and Theodore Stump of Las Cruces New Mexico.
Iowa State College graduates and guests gathered in the YMCA room to hear Ames speakers on college progress including new buildings and virus research. Officers were elected with Robert Buck as president, Mrs. Stephen Wiggers as vice president, and Calvin Wolf as secretary treasurer.
Sunset Park gains a new pavilion and modern toilet facilities funded by a $16,000 bond issue voted by Washington residents. Eclipse Lumber Co. began work November 4 1950 with completion targeted after spring, about May 1, amid winter delays.
Orie John Turner longtime Washington resident died March 1 in California. Born May 11, 1880, he was the son of William Albert and Mattie Turner and brother of Harry E. Turner. He worked in a hardware and toy store with his father, later in an automobile shop, then ran his own shop northwest of the water works office. He married Merie Geneva Kaye on June 27, 1905 and belonged to the Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, two sons Harold and Norman, daughter Geneva, all in California, and brothers Harry of Washington and Walter J. of Minneapolis.
Washington residents are reminded of the Boy Scout waste paper drive to be held here and at West Chester Saturday morning. Papers must be at the curb tied and ready for pickup at 9 oclock. Farmers may leave papers at the Christian church which serves as drive headquarters.

A Midcontinent DC3 crashed while attempting a landing in heavy snow at Sioux City municipal airport. 15 people were killed, 25 aboard with 10 survivors. one crew member Marilyn Woodbury from Kansas City survived with injuries. Pilot and co pilot were killed. National Guard aided rescue as 11 ambulances and fire crews worked at the scene.
Bill Smart of Smart Implement Co in Washington leads a two page spread in International Harvester magazine Dealer News. The piece features Kenneth Dunwoody Donald Nichols and W P Hap Monroe from the firm and includes Mrs Roger Smith and Mrs Edna Carter of the Dew Drop Inn.
Myrl Leavitt announces he has bought out partner Orville Whiteanack at Myrl and Orville's Cities Service Station. The station will be renamed Leavitt's Cities Service. Whiteanack's future plans are undetermined. The partners ran the business for five years and Leavitt will continue the same operations.
The Rev Charles C. Miller, pastor of College Avenue Christian in Des Moines, will be guest speaker at the union Sunday evening service on March 4 at 7 30 in the Christian church. He will discuss New Horizons of a Faith Tremendous with local pastors assisting. Special music comes from the Christian church music department.
