Mount Pleasant District Judge L. O. Newell directed a verdict for the defendant in a 6000 dollar damage suit brought by Mc Culley of Burlington against State Highway Patrolman E H Strater. The case centered on the arrest of Mc Culley last May.
Former Iowa Governor Noel Kraschel announced in Harlan that he is returning to private life and plans to deal in land and cattle. He offered no definite timeline and did not indicate permanent exit from politics after turning over state duties to Governor Wilson on January 12.
In Des Moines flu cases decline and doctors say epidemic danger may be past. Public Health Nursing reports 75 calls on Thursday, 135 Monday, 96 Wednesday. Ottumwa physicians warn pneumonia follows influenza. patients urged to stay in bed until fully recovered to avoid bronchial pneumonia.
The four month Swift packing plant strike in Sioux City cost Woodbury County 12771 dollars in Sheriff William R. Tice office charges. Auditor W. H. Thompson reported the strike began September 29 and ended late in January. Most expenses covered salaries for special deputies with 914 dollars for tear gas bombs shells and gas masks including 6306 dollars for tear gas masks.
Earl Dutemple, 55, was fatally crushed when several tons of frozen clay fell in a Clay Products Co shed. Ronald Sheridan, operating a tractor nearby, summoned help as Dutemple was buried under the clay. His stepson Earl McCullough and two others dug him out. a doctor pronounced him dead minutes later from chest and head injuries.

W vester Sharp sues Vesely in Washington district court seeking 2235 dollars for injuries to person and property from a highway collision on September 7, 1938. Sharp alleges Vesely drove negligently and turned left without warning after a truck struck his car. Attorney B A Baldwin of Iowa City represents the plaintiff.
Representative Ross Collins of Mississippi charged in the House that American military attaches have been asleep on the job. He also alleged a foreign nation has built an air force nearly equal to the combined forces of the other great powers, signaling Germany as the likely target. The remarks came during debate on a war department appropriation bill of about $499.86 million.

O L Bartholow arrives from Fairfield and rents the Knauss Shell Station at the corner of South Avenue B and West Washington Street. He has worked in farming electrical service and station work and enjoys basketball. He chose Washington for his new home and has taken a room at 403 East Washington Street with Mrs Marion Work.
President Roosevelt arrived at Charleston South Carolina aboard the cruiser Houston at 12 50 today ending a two week cruise with the battle fleet. A marine guard lined the dock as the ship entered and the band played while a 21 gun salute rang out. He planned to go ashore at 7 30 this evening to entrain for Washington.
Cadet E L Huber son of Mr and Mrs BE Huber Wellman is among the last of forty nine cadets on a Kemper military school eastern educational tour. The six year program covers Niagara Falls West Point New York City an ocean cruise to Norfolk VA historic Williamsburg Jamestown Yorktown a tour of Washington DC and a visit to Annapolis Naval Academy.
In Rajkot on March 3 Mahatma Gandhi began a fast unto death to protest the Rajkot state's broken pledge on social reforms. He appeared ill suited for another hunger strike and physicians declared him unfit for such an ordeal. His last meal yesterday included grapes oranges pomegranates and goat milk.

The Pub Me Service party announced changes to its municipal election ticket after Dunham Morrison withdrew from the forecouncil at large race. Harry Simpson moves to the at large slot, Lloyd Lovelett is shifted to the second ward councilman race, and nomination papers will be circulated and filed soon.
The Rene Warner family relocates to the Walter Harvey property southeast of Case Piaid. Mr and Mrs W H Spera and sons Bob and Kermit will move Monday to Decatur DL. Gordon Meeker and son Gordon Dean move to the Harvey apartment. William Mohland at 419 South Avenue C and Vesper Bonnett of Lamont visit sister Frankie Bonnett and friends.
Henrietta Laughead, 79, former Washington resident, died Monday night in Long Beach California at a brother’s home. Services were held Wednesday at Patterson and McQuilkin chapel in Long Beach with Dr. Johnstone Calhoun officiating. Entombment followed in Sunnyside Mausoleum. She was born in Ohio, lived in Iowa before moving to Long Beach in 1910 and belonged to the United Presbyterian church and Washington-Ainsworth IA club. Surviving are two brothers Walter and Howard Laughead of Long Beach, three nephews Richard Howard Jr and Percy Laughead, with sister Nannie deceased.
An injunction to keep voting machines in Wapello county failed. District Judge G W Dashiell signed an order releasing the machines to Auditor J & Love for use in the city elections this month. The case involved L J Dickinson, a Republican senatorial candidate who challenged the machines' custody following the November election.
Mount Pleasant Production Credit Association reduces rate on future borrowings from 6 to 4 percent. Applies to livestock and farming loans made after February 24 in Lee Des Moines Louisa Washington Jefferson Van Buren and Henry counties. The move supported by Daniel Moehn reflects strong 1938 results and public sale of bank debentures.

Vatican City March 3 Pope Pius XII in his first message as pope urged peace and goodwill among nations. He spoke from the chapel of the Vatican and called for mutual cooperation in the human family and true progress. The new pope also outlined plans to appoint a secretary of state and maintain Vatican diplomacy. In Europe democracies hailed the election as a triumph of democracy while Nazi leaders and some dictatorships reacted coolly. The United States welcomed the election and recalled his prior visit and praise for American liberty.
Borrowers from the Farm Security Administration obtained loans for equipment and services for group use totaling 68 801 since the program began July 1 1985. The overall cooperative loan total in the United States reached 4 404 182 as of January 1 1939 with 26 applications and 1 420 families sharing in the loans.
