Ray AL. Golin vaux, 46, of Waterloo, chief clerk in the accounting division of the Waterloo Cedar Falls and Northern railroad, died in a local hospital from injuries after slipping and falling while pushing a stalled automobile from a snowdrift near Melbourne on the highway.
DES MOINES Captain Claude Gillette of Iowa and brother of Senator Guy M. Gillette has been transferred to Honolulu to oversee Pearl Harbor fortifications. Large expenditures are planned for new dry docks and floating docks to accommodate the largest battleships and cruisers. He will assume duties on April 16.
Iowa lawmakers have spent about 2500 for each of 47 bills this year as the house and senate took a recess after 47 days of session. Legislators receive 1000 per session and enjoy paid vacation this year, including committee clerks and staff paid for each day whether they work.

State officials say reciprocal trucking treaties let foreign license trucks operate in Iowa without Iowa plates. Secretary Earl Miller estimates Iowa license revenue loss at about 1.5 million dollars annually and urges ending all reciprocal trucking agreements.

Paris March 2 Marshal Henry Philippe Patain aged 82 famed for Verdun defense was named France's ambassador to nationalist Spain. The cabinet met in an informal session to approve the appointment and Patain may depart for Burgos with his staff within days.

The Washington county health unit postpones the children’s speech clinic set for Saturday March 4 due to influenza among staff. If feasible, the event may be rescheduled for Saturday March 11 depending on staff recovery, with parents of registered children to be notified. The British freighter Newfoundland saved 150 men from the sinking seal ship Ranger after a six hour battle at sea. Ranger, 520 tons and 68 years old, rode out the flood with buckets and cooking utensils as the Newfoundland arrived about 50 miles away to begin rescue operations.
Sioux City voters rejected a city manager plan by 11 451 to 7 852 according to unofficial returns. Brighton March 2 Jobs S Kurtz 67 died at 2 AM in his home west of Pleasant Plain after suffering a stroke. He was born near Germanville Jefferson county one of twelve children. Survived by first wife Bertha Kauffman three children Angeline Voorhies Gerald and Howard Kurtz and seven children by second wife Clara Peck including Gertrude Weenike John Raymond Virginia Martha Donald Francis and others. Also survived by one stepson Thomas Peck and siblings Jake Kessel Lizzie Fritz Frank Tony. Funeral at St Josephs East Pleasant Plain with Rev E P Seidel. burial in cemetery adjoining church.
Two men held in the county jail were bound over to the grand jury after hearings with Justice of the Peace J. B. Boyee. Richard Lenninger of Washington waived preliminary hearing on a false check charge and posted $500 bond. Joseph Clark Nicholson of Morning Sun waived preliminary hearing on an operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated charge and bonded $500. Rev. W L Clapp and family traveled to Fairfield to visit Rev. Clapp's brother.
Mrs Verne Pangborn arrived in Iowa City with her mother Mrs H C Hull after a brief stay at the Pangborn residence. They came from the Pangborn home to resume daily life following a short visit.
Judge Marcus Manton, former member of the Second Circuit, and G. M. Spector an insurer, were indicted by a federal grand jury on conspiracy to defraud the U S government. The case arises from an ongoing probe of the federal judiciary and references Skrip Shacfer litigation.
District Judge Lou Ladd set March for a hearing on a motion for a new trial for Mrs. Ethel Skyles 58 convicted January 19 of second degree murder in the fatal December shooting of Carl Jones 23 a bread truck driver during an argument with Skyles husband over a 5 50 check.

A one act play by Edward B. Rowan in Cedar Rapids was greeted in Washington in a church auditorium with anti Semitic handbills. The narrative centers on a Jewish father in Berlin returning to his family and ends with the father in a concentration camp and the mother dying by action. Handbills included slogans claiming Jewish control of communism government press and media triggering indignation among audience members.

Des Moines report shows Iowa with 267 disposal plants serving 341 municipalities and a population of 1,252,610. Public Health Engineer A H Wieters notes Iowa is among 16 states with 100 or more communities with plants and 68 percent of residents are served by municipal sewage facilities.
Five trainmen escaped a serious crash when Frank Salzer of Cedar Rapids suffered a paralytic stroke at the throttle of a North Western switch engine. The engine bolted through three street crossings, pushing a hog car, into an alley siding and stopped a car length from a tank car. With the engineer’s weight on the throttle the locomotive ran at speeds from 30 to 140 miles per hour.

A U S delegation from the Iowa legislature and the A. R. next week will return a flag taken in 1864 by a member of the 18th Iowa cavalry. The banner flew over Montgomery during secession and was housed in the Iowa Historical Museum since 1892. Alabama legislators will receive the flag at ceremonies on March 8 after Iowa appropriated $250 for expenses.
County supervisors planned to convert the Busby factory building, bought for 2500 from Washington National Bank trustees, into storage and shop space for courier road machinery. The aim is to shelter county machines, reduce outdoor storage, and streamline shop work. The county maintains 12 maintenance workers, six tractors and snow plows, and other road equipment managed by Howard McBride and Bob Welte.
Funeral services for Mrs Bart Glassburner, daughter in law of Mrs Etta Glassburner of Washington, will begin at the Ottumwa home at 10 a m Saturday. A second service follows at 11 40 a m in the Methodist church at Chillicothe Iowa. Mrs Glassburner died last evening.
