School officials reported 2085 pupils absent Tuesday due to an influenza outbreak in Davenport. The column highlights statewide concerns over illness impacting local schools and daily operations.
Snow blocked highways prevented judges and jurors from reaching Corning for the trial of R G Yates charged with carrying concealed weapons. Judge Homey A Fuller used telephone to continue the case.
Former State Senator James M. Bell was found not guilty of contempt of court in Burlington in an alimony action filed by his former wife Blanche M. Bell. Judge Paul Mc Cord ruled there was no evidence of willful disobedience of a court order to support a minor child.
Chariton voters in a special election defeated a plan to build and operate a municipal gas plant. The measure failed 563 to 131 over a revenue bond issue not to exceed 98 000 dollars. The People's Gas and Power Co. currently holds the gas franchise in Chariton.
DES MOINES farmers may obtain small trees for reforestation and erosion control at very low cost under the Clarke McNary law distribution program. Trees must be used for woodlots reforestation or erosion control and ordered in lots of 500 minimum per species or 1000 minimum per total order, with varieties including Black locust green ash American elm red elm red oak black oak shagbark hickory hackberry Osage orange cottonwood Western yellow pine red or Norway pine Jack pine and white pine.
Des Moines reports that traffic tickets cannot be deducted as automobile expenses for state income tax. LaVerne Clark, director of the income tax division, cites negligence as the reason. Other non deductible items include damages from breach of promise or alienation of affection.
More than 400 farm bureau representatives from nearly every Iowa county met in Des Moines to establish a member automobile insurance company. A corporation was formed to handle insurance but no action will occur until county insurance committees pledge sufficient business to ensure operation.
Campbell Heating Co. of Des Moines filed two mechanic's liens totaling 6709 dollars against Radio Chapel and the 70000 dollar independent evangelistic center, and Burroughs A. Waltrip its director. Younker Brothers filed a 220 dollar petition for balance on velvet yardage used for curtains at the chapel.
Dr A W Clow has been selected by the Iowa Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons to discuss Your Health in Winter on Station KFIN Marshalltown this evening from 7 26 to 7 45. The program is part of a State Society educational series. Dr G W Loerke of Ottumwa will appear on the game program with him.
Merchants clerks and customers are urged to claim free money at Chamber of Commerce member stores. Money will be given away dollar for dollar until further notice. Details were announced in last night’s Journal by the Big Days Committee.
Citizens ticket led by Mayor Lloyd Lytle and council members face Public Service contenders headed by O E Schmitt for mayor. Both tickets list multiple incumbents as campaigns begin ahead of the March 27 city election.
John L. Lewis leader of the Congress of Industrial Organizations and his wife appear in Washington after returning per a Roosevelt letter for another peace parley with the rival American Federation of Labor. Both Lewis and AFL President William Green have named representatives to discuss terms.
Glenn Schlichting 26 of Columbus Junction and North Platte Nebraska was killed in a railroad accident near North Platte. The body will be brought to Columbus Junction for burial at Indian Creek cemetery. He was born December 11 1902 and attended Columbus High School. He was survived by his parents two brothers Cecil and John Jr and a sister Lois. Funeral arrangements are being made by Richie funeral home.
Frank Gardner of Des Moines died last night at his home after a six year illness. Funeral services will be in Wellman Saturday at ten for relatives and friends, burial in Lexington cemetery, with another service in Des Moines Friday morning. He was the son of A M and Susan Gardner, survived by his wife Julia Grambling and his brother C C Gardner of Wellman.
Richard Lenninger of Washington was arrested by Sheriff H M Putnam on charges of passing false checks totaling 245 dollars in Washington county. He was to appear before Justice J E Boye for a hearing this afternoon. He allegedly passed 195 dollars to Mrs D E Brumback in Wellston for hogs and a 50 dollar check to a Keokuk county man for livestock. Lenninger says he warned recipients to
One hundred twenty three county grade school pupils will compete in the annual county spelling contest at the courthouse next Saturday. 78 enter the main contest for grades five through eight while 45 compete in the junior event for grades one through four.
The Journal runs a bids notice for a new rural school in No 7 district five miles southeast of town to replace the fire-destroyed building. Plans show a 20 by 28 foot main area with a front stair, optional fuel room, basement hot air heating, and asbestos shingle roof. The district authorized 2800 dollars for construction and equipment, about 800 of which comes from insurance. Twenty pupils are temporarily housed in No 11 school with seats borrowed from neighboring districts.

The report also notes a rapid military aircraft procurement plan to buy 651 combat planes and 14 photographic planes immediately, bringing total deliveries to 1,690 within 14 months as the army aims for 5,600 to 6,000 first line planes.
Washington board of education awarded contracts totaling 96184 for the Lincoln grade school to serve south town. J E Lovejoy Co of Des Moines won the general bid 76843, Pierson & Pierson Fairfield won plumbing 15485, and Furlong Electric Des Moines won wiring 3856. Bids ranged to 86258 with seven bidders per contract.
Jack DeWeese told officers last night he was robbed on East Seventh Street by a man he described as a negro. The assailant produced a gun, searched his pockets, and took a small amount of money, chewing tobacco, and a pocket knife. He noted extra coins in a mitten were missed by the robber.
