A caller alerted police about a vehicle bearing official license No. 1 parked near Hotel Fort Des Moines. Motorcycle Patrolman William Pherrin issued a traffic summons ordering Governor Herring to appear in traffic court.
A fifth generation joined the Burns family of Traer when Peter Dean Taylor was born to Mr and Mrs Peter Taylor of Reinbeck. The generations include Mrs John Burns of Traer and Mrs B F Newell of Dysart, with grandmother Mrs Henry Strobehm of Buckingham.
Julius Heinmiller family near Horton will move four miles in three stages. Goods travel a mile by sled then a mile by truck and finish two miles by sled. The unusual move takes place in Nashua and reflects a careful staged relocation.
A Centerville report describes grasshoppers on the J. T. McFarland farm resisting remaining snow. Men clear a road drift while hoppers swarm and are displayed to skeptical onlookers.
A live bat was spotted in front of a local business about an hour before a warm wave arrived from the west. The creature was as lively as bats are in summer, and experts question if mild early week weather prompted it to emerge from hibernation.

The walkout affects Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue buildings from Battery to Bronx, threatening 9,600 offices, hotels, and apartments.
A. W. Zuber, field examiner for the state income tax from Iowa City, will visit Washington county next week to assist residents with tax returns. He will be at the Washington courthouse on March 9 and 10, Brighton Coppock and Noble on March 11, West Chester and Wellman on March 12, Ainsworth Haskins and Riverside on March 13, and Kalona on March 14. He is spending this week in Keokuk county.
Des Moines reports that prices paid for Iowa farm products rose slightly through February 15. Hogs rose from 9.10 to 9.75 per hundred. corn at 49 cents a bushel, up two cents since January 15. oats unchanged at 2.38. wheat dipped slightly. In Washington, 1935 prices for meat animals, poultry, eggs and livestock were up markedly from 1934 and 1933, with hogs rising fastest. Hog prices in 1935 averaged 8.36 per hundred pounds live, while slaughtered hogs fell from 438,872,000 in 1934 to 26,056,000 in 1935 under federal inspection.
Miss Luella Kerr a leading Washington figure died after a months long illness at her sister’s home. Funeral services were conducted at the Sherman funeral home by Rev. D Chalmers Fulton with interment in Elm Grove cemetery. Born in 1871 she was a student, teacher and writer who loved travel and nature.
Richard A. Stewart, a Washington lawyer, announces his candidacy for county attorney on the Republican ticket for the June primary. He has practiced in Washington since November 1933 and holds degrees from Monmouth College Northwestern University Western Reserve University and Brookhart law office. He was admitted to the bar in 1935 and is related to local figures including John A. Stewart and B. L. Stewart. He joins L. J. Kehoe and Theodore B. Bailey in the Republican field.
The Federation of Labor says January unemployment rose to 12.626 million, the largest January increase since 1931. President William Green blames indifference of individuals to job creation and warns prosperity cannot return without more employment.
Funeral services for Wil Gentzler will be held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Lt. Jones funeral home. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. The funeral party is expected to arrive from Waterloo tonight. Gentzler, a former Washington resident, died in Waterloo in February. burial was delayed by blocked roads and freezing weather.

Dillon Seyh of Richland started work today at the local A and P store. The 28 year old single Penn College Oskaloosa graduate has previous grocery experience and holds membership in the Masonic lodge and the Methodist church.
Almon Alters twenty, son of Mr and Mrs Almon Alters, was found dead in his father’s Coppock workshop. Coroner J Cook deemed it death by own action after a rope suicide. An inquest was set for Mt Pleasant. Surviving Alters include four sisters and one brother. Born near Wayland, he moved to Coppock five years ago and attended Douglas rural school. Burial at Cottonwood Cemetery with Rev Clifford Carter officiating.
Two roof fires occurred Saturday afternoon in the east part of town. The first at Rodney Kephart residence near East Second Street was spotted early and controlled with chemical extinguishers, leaving only a small hole burned in the roof. A second blaze east of Hemmings feed mill on East Third Street burned a small hole in the roof with limited damage.
The Washington Golf and Country Club has purchased the Wenger sixty acre tract at $125 per acre, ending twelve years of club ownership of the land used as a golf course. The grounds purchase committee led the effort, with about 75 stockhalter members now, and plans to develop one of the state’s most notable nine hole courses. The club owes thanks to leaders Bunny Blair, Fred Neiswanger, and W. Harwood for their long service.
This March first marks the best real estate activity in six years in Washington County. Transactions in farm land and other property are returning to normal with deeds mortgages and releases up, many closings occurring on the first. Weather delays and road conditions pushed some deals to later in the week.
