Franklin Chittenden, a Fayette coal dealer, cleared his 17 year burden of a Wyoming coal stockpile. He bought the coal in 1919 at 14.50 a ton but could not sell until the recent coal shortage raised prices to about 50 dollars per ton.
Music teacher A Chaney suffered a throat blockage during a west area operatic show. Student Luke was rushed to hospital for treatment after the incident.
At 9 30 A M Thursday WACE Fairfield broadcast a description of an auto stolen from Logan near the Nebraska line. By 5 P M the sheriff at Centerville canceled the alert saying he had the car and was holding the driver. The thief had traveled over 200 miles across the state but remained in radio coverage.
More than 69 casts have entered the annual University of Iowa play production festival in Iowa City as directors anticipate a total near the year's prior record of 71. Prof E C Mabie notes the unusually large entry count for this stage of the competition.

If the pattern holds statewide, total levies reach nearly 90 million dollars, about 13 million more than 1935, with refunds and other revenue offsetting part of the burden. The Des Moines area bears about 7.45 million, aided by a state levy of 8.1 mills and a soldiers bonus tax provision.
Clarence Phillips an Allis Chalmers agent in Washington reports about 1000 guests for a farm machinery event yesterday. Four hundred attended the State theater showing harvesters plows and machinery in operation while several hundred enjoyed lunch at the Philips yard. Four all crop harvesters and two tractors were sold, with H F Merritt of Des Moines praising the event as the best seen in the state.
The combined choirs of Washington churches will present The Holy City by Gaul on Easter Sunday April 12 at United Presbyterian Church as a follow up to the Christmas Messiah. In Des Moines Iowa the state Republican convention declined to back Senator Lester J. Dickinson for president naming 22 delegates to the national convention in Cleveland in June. The body re elected Harri son E Spangler and Martha McClure to the national committee and chose four delegates at large including Spangler John Hammill Dan Turner and Robert Calflesh. The nominating committee had proposed Spangler McClure Pritchard and Butler as the state delegates.
Theodore B Bailey, local attorney and son of former county attorney Marsh W Bailey, announces his bid for the county attorney post on the Republican ticket in the June primaries. Bailey, admitted to the Iowa Bar in October 1935, has practiced in the Bailey building for about 18 months and is active in civic affairs. Fellow Republican candidate L J Kehoe of Wellman announced his candidacy weeks earlier.
Washington county's March term of district court will not open on the originally scheduled date. Judge Frank Beehly of Montzuma orders the term to begin Monday March 16. Juror reporting and schedules shift accordingly with grand jurors drawn March 17 and petit jurors reporting March 23.
