State Agents Jerry Wood and McDougall questioned Fred James La Rue in Washington after Ottumwa police arrested him on suspicion of stealing hoods from a car and a truck. Authorities probe La Rue for possible ties to a theft gang in Ottumwa. His preliminary hearing was waived and bonds set at 1500 dollars as his wife sought funds in Ottumwa. La Rue says his car was stolen before it was found near the arrest site and denies involvement.
Paris dispatch reports the finance committee approved the measure 20 to 3 signaling easy Senate passage for Premier Bonnet and Finance Minister Bonnet on plenary powers to address the French financial crisis. The bill had already passed the chamber.
Edmund P. Morrison Jr was elected president of the Y's Men's club at the regular meeting and will attend the International Convention in Grand Rapids Michigan in August. Clarence M. Logan was named vice president and programs chairman with Harry Sizer as secretary and Dave Elder as treasurer.

Judge William Clark denounced their false testimony and the family showed visible distress during sentencing.

In Canton Ohio on June 75 pickets and sympathizers were placed under technical arrest by National Guardsmen as Republic Steel mills reopened. A hydrant was dynamited cutting water to a plant for hours while repairs occurred. About 1,400 workers returned to four mills, with 7,000 normally employed. Some non-strikers were cut by glass as cars were driven in.
Des Moines reports the state tax board moved to rescind a two percent used car tax just before collection began. Governor Kraschel urged the reversal, meaning the tax will not apply to used cars traded in with new car deals. The tax had not been collected for three years and was slated to start next month.

Mrs Ira Bullis died at 5 45 this morning at Washington County Hospital where she had been since last Friday. Funeral preparations are at Sherman’s funeral home and burial will be in Brookings South Dakota. Born in Richmond Virginia sixty eight years ago she lived in Washington County and visited here often. She arrived in April fell seriously ill after arrival. She was the widow of James B Crayne of West Chester and five years ago married Mr Bullis a rural mail carrier at Fredonia Dakota. Her maiden name was Dubois.
Secretary O E Schmitt of the Chamber of Commerce announced that Washington food stores will close at 10 am Monday July 5 to observe a chamber approved holiday. Most stores will remain closed all day while drug stores and restaurants keep their usual Sunday hours.
Dr Arthur Atack local Methodist minister will address the Journal Three Quarter Century Club at the annual dinner Thursday July Std. The event at Washington Country club starts at noon with a brief program and time for socializing. Members aged 75 or more may join at the Journal office, free of dues or fees.

Japanese artillery sank one of three Soviet gunboats on the Amur River south of Senisu Island and damaged another after Soviet forces opened fire. A third gunboat retired as Japanese and Manchukuo forces repelled the attack. Manchukuo lodged a strong protest with Soviet authorities.

A newborn named Kennetha Smith died in Hamburg after a surgical operation to insert a stomach tube failed to save her life. The infant, born with a blocked esophagus and fed by syringe since birth, underwent the procedure to relieve the condition.
