Kennetha Kay Schmitt infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Kennethschmitt of Sidney will have surgery here to create a stomach inlet. Doctors found the baby’s esophagus ends about five inches from her gums shortly after birth five days ago.
In Cedar Rapids Dr J K Von Lackum escaped serious injury when a 15 year old attacker swung at him in an alley after a ball game. The hat absorbed the hit and the doctor overpowered the youth after a struggle, the blow broken by the stiff straw hat and wire cutters used in the attempt.
Governor Vraeche will appoint R. G. Moore of Dunlap to the state conservation commission to succeed A. F. E. Papp of Council Bluffs. Moore, a state representative from Harrison county, was nominated in the legislature’s closing days but the Senate did not act.
Mrs Olson 84 slipped when her washing machine tipped through a flooring hole into a cistern eight feet deep. She clung to a filter to stay afloat until two men, LeRow Knoke and Merle Swaney, pulled her from the water. Repairs proceed on the home's floor this week.

The Bethlehem Steel Cambria steel plant in Johnstown Pennsylvania suffered two dynamite explosions that damaged main water lines, forcing shutdown of operations. Officials estimate a two week repair period as pumps drop to zero and heat is turned off. Mayor Shields urged Pennsylvania Governor Earle for military protection of area water reservoirs. The blast at 10 30 p m yesterday and a second blast early this morning damaged lines seven miles and one mile from the plant.
Three youths Anthony Drish Howard Norton and Leo Drish pleaded guilty to giving beer to minors fifteen years old or younger. Judge J G Patterson sentenced each to six months in the county jail after separate arraignments. The judge warned of harsher charges and urged seriousness of the offense.
County Attorney Richard A Stewart said he planned another brief criminal session this afternoon after reading the information against three Brighton men. J R Mills, arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated following a collision with a parked car on North Marion Avenue, was to be brought into court later today to answer the charge.
Three boys aged 13 to 16 were brought to court charged with stealing fireworks from Phillips & Hebner Drug Store stored in the Hebner building on North Iowa avenue. They were apprehended after firing crackers west of town by City Marshall Jay Brown. Judge Patterson will review the case and reconvene later. two youths were first offenders, one had prior theft charges.
Fred James La Rue of Ottumwa was arraigned on charges of larceny committed during the night.
A New York grand jury returned three first degree murder indictments against Robert Irwin, a confessed killer, for the Veronica Gedeon murder and related counts. Irwin faced formal pleas as his attorney Samuel Liewitz labeled him “crazy,” while Prosecuting Attorney Dodge announced the death penalty would be pursued.

Des Moines reports total unemployment compensation payroll tax receipts for the first quarter reached 1,112,373 dollars. Commission cashier C. F. Wikins said this, along with 2,500,008 dollars collected in 1936, increased the year’s total receipts.
A school board meeting reported strong parent and pupil approval for four playground activities. The recreation board thanks the school board mayor and city officials and says hand craft projects will start once funding for materials is secured.

Rosy Quint, 38, of Green Castle Missouri, was killed when his truck collided with the Rock Inland’s Golden State Limited about four miles southwest of Centerville Iowa.
