The Brighton program opens with Karen Murphy noting the city recreation effort. All grade school children are invited to meet at City Park each Thursday from 9 30 to 11 30 a m. The program runs through July.
Kalona Town Players announce auditions for the Down Home Summer Show to be staged July 15 and 16 at the Kalona Recreation Center. Auditions Sunday at 7 p.m. at the center, with Patty Mishler and Jerry Huffman in charge seeking singers dancers comedians and surprises. Contact either chairperson for details.
The Senate approved by voice vote a Dick Clark Iowa amendment to allocate 1.55 million dollars for a pseudorabies control program. The measure was adopted during debate on this year's agriculture appropriations bill.
Roy Wilkins announced his retirement from active leadership at the 68th NAACP convention in St. Louis. The 75 year old veteran said he would remain active in the fight for racial justice, vowing to speak out write and offer suggestions.
Washington United Press International reports the House voted to retain the $12,900 annual pay raise approved last March, aligning with a prior Senate vote. Speaker Thomas O'Neill warned members who seek to abandon the raise that they should leave Congress if they lack the nerve to uphold the pay increase.
The court, in a 7-2 decision by Justice Byron White, strikes down the death penalty for rape without murder as cruel and excessive. Anthony Coker, on Georgia’s death row for raping a 16 year old in 1972, wins clemency and other Georgia men’s death sentences for rape are set aside. Florida and Georgia cases still yield death sentences for rape in separate actions.

A Polk County grand jury returned nine indictments in a probe of the Iowa Beer and Liquor Control Department. The charges include gifts to director Rolland A. Gallagher, and kickbacks tied to state liquor store leases. Indictments also involve Deputy Director George Price and Leslie D. Pinckney, with names from at least two Iowa firms.
President Carter signaled he has made a decision on the B1 bomber and a Thursday morning news conference was set to announce it. Senators at a White House breakfast predicted the decision could endorse substantial production, with views split among supporters and opponents. The Air Force seeks more than 200 aircraft, while other issues include possible full halt or limited production.
A predawn fire in Oskaloosa Iowa destroyed Hawkeye Lumber Co and adjacent buildings. Damage estimated over 1 million dollars. Six residents escaped unharmed as flames spread through the lumber yard to a house and an apartment building. Fire officials cited dry weather and stock as key factors. Firefighters from Albia Fremont Knoxville Ottumwa and Pella aided.
The Schaffner Players led by Jimmy Davis alias Tobias Tolliver drew an appreciative crowd for The Return of Aunt Susie at the Schaffner tent. The seven year gap since their last local run was noted as they perform through Thursday with tickets at 2 for children under 12 and 3 for adults, sponsored by Blair House Corporation for profit toward the Blair House building.
The James Davis family runs the Schaffner Players tent show touring June to September across towns in Iowa Illinois and Indiana. They balance dramatic work with family life in a motor home while three sons act musically in the troupe. Mrs Davis earned a $20000 Hollywood Squares prize during a winter trip to California and Las Vegas.
