The Washington County courthouse offices will close for all in person business from noon through the rest of Thursday June 30 to allow supervisors to balance cash accounts as the fiscal year ends.Those with business to transact must visit before noon Thursday.
Rotary students from around the U.S.A. arrive in four buses at Central Park around 5 p.m. tomorrow. Host families should meet the buses and collect their assigned students. A Sunset Park potluck follows with meat or two other dishes per family and tableware. If rain, the gathering moves to United Presbyterian Church dining room.
Kalona Town Players stage Dracula at 8 p.m. July 1 and 2 at Kalona Recreation Center. It opens a summer trio of productions with more plans for a fourth annual Down Home Summer Show in July and an August musical. Jerry Huffman directs Dracula with individual or season tickets available.
A bill requiring public school teachers to lead students in daily Pledge of Allegiance recitations became law after the legislature overrode Gov. Dukakis veto. The Senate refused to reconsider the veto override. Opponents plan to challenge the law in the state Supreme Court.
Iowa Bar Association officials warn that new Supreme Court dictated attorney fee advertisements may mislead clients. F. James Bradley says flat fees could misrepresent services without facts. Phillip J. Wilson argues ads should not overhaul fee structure or treat legal work as a staple commodity.
Iowa Public Safety officials warn young adults who drink before driving during the July 4 weekend. Deputy commissioner Robert Holetz notes holiday safety talk often misses grim realities. He cites 1976’s Fourth of July deaths as the worst in years, with sixteen nationwide Iowa road fatalities including 15 aged 17 to 25.

Iowa DOT aims to test two low power roadside radio transmitters on I 80 near Council Bluffs and Davenport to broadcast weather and road reports. The project, risking a conflict with broadcasters, seeks two AM frequencies 540 and 1610 kilocycles and would expand if feasible.

He praised talks with Carter staff and urged use of the phrase cities and towns when referring to organized communities.
A Wayland man, Jerry E. Turner, 22, remained in satisfactory condition at Washington County Hospital after falling from the back of a pickup driven by Ronald E. Earll, 28, near Brighton. Turner leaned out to ask riders to turn up the radio, the rear wheel ran over his midsection, and he suffered second degree pavement burns. Deputy Cliff Elmore transported him. no charges filed.
Congress moved Carter energy measures forward with tax credits for home insulation and solar or wind systems while proposing to end federal tax deductions for state gas taxes. Senate ethics push cleared 74 to 5, backing a system to appoint a special prosecutor and require finances disclosures for top federal workers.
