Riverside plant turns newsprint into insulation ECON product

Iowa Insulation, Inc. near Riverside began producing cellulose insulation from recycled newspapers. The plant, named ECON, aims for 30,000 lbs daily and about 15 workers, using a borate mix for fire resistance. Production includes sorting, hammermilling, and packaging into 30-lb bags with 25 lbs paper and 5 lbs chemical per bag.

Washington observes Independence Day closures

Holiday Monday will see nearly all Washington businesses closed on July 4 as offices and retail outlets shut. Incoming mail will be received with no city or rural delivery. the post office lobby opens 8 to 11 a.m. and mail dispatch occurs at 11 a.m. The Evening Journal will not be printed, one of two annual holidays. local, state and federal offices also close.

Hungry thief burgs Iowa City home take 50 in drinks

Fedra Greer reports a burglar entered her Iowa City home and stole 50 dollars worth of champagne and whisky. The thief reportedly ate breakfast on site before fleeing, leaving the resident seeking help from authorities.

Fire at Oskaloosa lumber yard causes multi-building damage

Oskaloosa Fire Chief Willard Ellis cited dry weather as fueling a fast-spreading fire that began at a lumber yard around 5 am Wednesday, damaging two homes and a vacant office building with losses above 2 million dollars. No injuries reported as investigators continue.

Six Inch Rain Fells Iowa Hit by Thunderstorms

Eastern Iowa faced heavy storms as up to six inches of rain drenched areas including Princeton. The Quad Cities reported lightning and deep water while the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls was damaged and briefly deflated when campus power failed. Cleanup was underway.

Farm prices show decline but food costs stay higher

Washington UPI reports farm prices fell 5 percent in the June 15 month, ending a six month rise. Officials say consumer food prices won’t drop, with the Agriculture Department reaffirming forecasts of slower price increases in H2 1977, though grocery prices for the year may rise about 6 percent from 1976 led by coffee and imported foods.

Indictment in Iowa liquor real estate probe lands four charged

DES MOINES UPI Iowa real estate manager Leslie D Pinckney pleaded innocent to three bribery counts and two conspiracy counts in nine indictments by a Polk County grand jury. Other arraigned defendants include Rolland Gallagher Donald R Tietz and Chris Hemmen. Gallagher faces gifts misconduct. Tietz and Hemmen charged with bribery and conspiracy. Trial dates set in August with bond posted. John O Payne named in indictments as a fifth defendant awaiting arraignment.
