Axis mechanized armies crack eastward through British lines while RAF bombardments pound Matruh. An Axis communique claims the encirclement and capture of the British base at Matruh with 6,000 prisoners as Rommel’s forces push toward Egypt and vital Allied supply routes.
Iowa City stations shut from 1 to 2 pm to donate trucks and staff for a house to house canvass aiding the rubber salvage drive. Dean Jones, county salvage chairman, says Boy Scouts also offered help in the effort. Camp Dodge hosted the first battalion of the Town state guard for two weeks of training with 240 men across six companies and HQ units. Arnold Park saw 350 delegates at the Iowa Chiropractic Association convention opening, led by D H Scanlon of Sheldon for a three day session.
Kenneth Gibbs aged two, son of Mr and Mrs Jay Gibbs, died at Corbin clinic from head injuries after falling down a storm cellar entrance at the family farm four miles northwest of Corydon. His mother had left the cellar door ajar to air it after rains.
Sugar stamp No. 5 takes effect today and runs through July 25. It delivers two pounds of sugar per month, replacing the two weeks coverage while preserving a weekly half pound allotment for each consumer.

A man found dead in Sac City, Iowa, carried a World War I era registration card showing he registered in Washington on April 27. The card bore the name Chris Proder, a Red Oak, Iowa residence, but he was not known there or in Washington. Born in Chicago in 1888, the man was a transient with no further addresses or data available from the county selective service board.
The headquarters company of the First regiment of Iowa State Guards departs from the armory in a chartered bus headed for Camp Dodge. The unit will encamp with other battalion units for two weeks under Second Lieutenant Rodney Kep hart, with Captain Howard P. Miller already at camp and First Lieutenant Harry Donaldson unable to go. Read lists show who will and will not attend the campaign experience.
Funeral services were held at L A Jones funeral home for Mrs Mary B Thompson 82 who died Saturday afternoon at her nephew Ern est Salladays home where she had lived three months She was born in Kingston Iowa daughter of Isaiah Salladay and Sarah Ann Barn es Salladay She was married to William Harrison Thompson who died about 15 years ago Her home was Monmouth Illinois Surviving are her brother Frank J Salladay of this county three nephews and other relatives Burial was in Kingston Cemetery near Burlington

Lydia Frances Lutz 90 of near Dublin died after a month long illness at Washington county hospital. Born May 19 1852 near Mansfield Ohio she married George W Lutz in 1868 and moved to Washington county in 1876. Funeral at L A Jones funeral home Tuesday led by Dr R C Keagy with burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
Washington hosted the largest dairy cattle show of the year with 68 Brown Swiss on display at the armory. About 150 attended the Brown Swiss breeders' picnic with Canton No. 7 and southeast Iowa counties in the judging and events. Grand champion cow born nine years ago produced 651 pounds of butterfat. grand champion bull was four years old. Junior champions were a yearling cow and a yearling bull. Officers were reelected. judging contests crowned top breeders and the day featured remarks by Floyd Arnold and remarks at a welcome by C. R. Wilson.
President Roosevelt, acting on Interior Secretary Ickes and William Boyd, extends the scrap rubber collection campaign to midnight July 10 after a dip in yield to 219000 tons through June 27. Ickes cites hoarding by some individuals including government officials as a cause.
Tomorrow Washington county young men aged 18 to 25 must register for military service from 7 to 9 in the evening. Registration occurs in the Legion rooms on the second floor of City Hall, with order numbers assigned by exact age rather than a lottery. About 00 are expected to register.
Clara Faulkner deputy county superintendent of schools remains in the hospital after a highway 92 crash east of the city. Her nephew Bob Faulkner was driving. both suffered injuries. Bob had a facial cut and abrasion while Miss Faulkner endured a broken ankle lacerations and a forehead cut. The car left the north ditch and hit a tree. a heat tender and broken headlight were noted.
Co B White of 421 South Eighth Avenue noted a birthday Friday when a group of relatives and friends arrived unannounced. They shared a cooperative dinner and spent the afternoon visiting.
Washington business places plan a 15 minute war bonds sale drive from noon to 12 15 Wednesday as part of a national July campaign. The Chamber of Commerce, led by Phil Antonoff, urges all retailers to suspend normal sales and concentrate on bonds and stamps. The J C Penney company aims to raise 1 2 million in July to fund air support, with local staff pledges and active selling efforts planned.
The CPT program will expand to civilian pilot training with a new schedule at Washington airport. A class of 15 students will be organized every eight weeks, totaling about 240 hours of ground school and roughly 5 flying hours. Fred Hueholt, recently arrived from Clinton, remains as flight instructor.
The rationing board announced July quotas for tires including 12 passenger tires 46 passenger retreads 380 passenger tubes 54 truck tires 63 truck retreads and 60 truck tubes. A new second grade tire quota for war workers is two tires issued on a written order from the transportation committee at the plant. Applicants must prove no other transportation to their plant.
Questionnaires have been sent to 100 more Washington county registrants to classify them for army service based on their answers. The House appropriations committee approved a $1,830,487,615 bill funding 19 war agencies for fiscal 1943 and 15 new rationing programs. The measure, sent to the House for immediate action, would fund operations from July 1 and face sharp debate over the Office of Price Administration budget.

Adelzite Swartzendruber daughter of Dr J R Swartzendruber of Kalona was killed in a bus accident near Cheyenne Wyoming Saturday night. The body will arrive in Iowa City tomorrow morning. Funeral services are set for Wednesday afternoon at the Kalona Methodist church. Burial arrangements are handled by Peterseim funeral home. She had been visiting her maternal grandmother near Las Vegas New Mexico and was traveling by train when plans changed to go by bus. Local officials notified the family about the accident.
