Iowa residents substituting saccharin for sugar were advised to go easy by the state health department. The department said the sweetener can suppress appetite slow gastric digestion and hinder intestinal absorption. It urged those facing rationing to adjust to unsweetened foods.
The Senate approved a 42.82 billion dollar army appropriation for 1943 by voice vote and sent the measure back to the House for concurrence with minor amendments. It includes funds for nearly 100000 tanks and 11.32 billion for aircraft production plus 12.7 billion for land lease. The bill totals 10.74 billion for pay and subsistence of an army expected to exceed 4.5 million.
DES MOINES Dr. Marvin Haygood 57 director of local service for the Iowa state health department died at Iowa Methodist hospital of coronary thrombosis. He had planned to assume a new post July 1 as director of local service for Illinois state health department at Springfield. His resignation was submitted but a successor was not yet named.
DES MOINES One county fair was canceled in Town while two other county fairs will be held as usual. In two counties the fairs will be limited to 4-H achievement shows. The changes follow a request by Joseph Eastman defense transportation director to cancel fairs where possible to reduce driving and conserve rubber. He noted some cancellations are too late and some fairs may require little travel.
Dr Genevieve Stearns of the State University of Iowa pediatrics department and Dr Margaret Olson of Iowa State College foods and nutrition were awarded gold medals and cash prizes by the Borden Co at the American Home Economics Association banquet in Boston.
The office of price administration in Washington amended tire rules to broaden eligibility for drivers. Surgeons veterinarians and ministers gain tires for professional duties only. osteopaths join medical doctors. ministers may use tires for any congregational needs. public health nurses may receive tires for visits. public school officials and teachers may drive to work with tires.
The Highland Center civilian defense school moves from Highland Center school to Bethel church to gain space and electricity for motion pictures. The event, organized by the defense council and county war board, drew about 135 at Jackson Center school house with speakers Hal Reister Leslie Gates and J W Chandler. Fire truck demonstration by Farmers' Mutual followed.
West Union boys known as the Pearl Harbor Gang collected 166 more pounds of old rubber than the MacArthur Vets on Saturday morning and earned a breakfast of pancakes and sausage while the Vets received rolls.
Estherville city council gave formal consent to purchase additional land for the Estherville airport. The expansion will bring the field to 400 acres to achieve a class 8 rating and continue the civilian pilot training program.
Young men ages 18 to 20 register in Washington today for possible U S Army service. About 600 names may be added to the county list. Those turning 20 since the Feb 18 national registration are liable immediately, while younger men delay. No lottery. order numbers issued by birth order. Order numbers available after July 21.
Richard Soren Sorenson of Harlan aged two is believed drowned in the West Nishnabotna River after being with his parents in a strawberry patch near the bank. Rescue teams face rising water hampering efforts to locate the body.
The navy announced four more Axis submarine sinkings in the western Atlantic region near the U S coast. A large American sea going vessel, a medium American merchant ship, a small Norwegian ship and a Yugoslavian ship were torpedoed. One tug also sunk with 21 killed. Survivors landed at an east coast port.
County agent J W Chandler reports in full swing anti inflation efforts across the county via district meetings and trained educational cooperators. He expects most farm families to be reached through meetings or personal contact before the drive ends, with Jackson township leading progress and a seven point program proposed including taxation, price ceilings, wage and agricultural price stabilization, war bond purchases, and rationing.
The rationing board announced a second trade registration for sugar. Retailers, institutions, and industrial users who registered initially for two months must re register. Forms are distributed to affected towns and returned to the rationing board. local trade category users must apply at the courthouse office.
Tonisa May Yoder sues Henry S. Yoder in district court seeking a decree of separate maintenance and custody of four minor children. She requests $150 per month as temporary alimony and child support. The couple married in Washington on December 15, 1928 and lived together until May of this year. Attorney T R Adams of Kalona represents the plaintiff.
President Roosevelt ordered all government agencies to gather scrap rubber for a campaign extended to July 10. The drive's success may lead to gasoline rationing, with Ickes blaming officials for the program's slow start and further conserving measures likely depending on scrap totals.
Bob Houseal son of Mr and Mrs Isadore Houseal of Washington served five months in the coast guard and was among twelve men from his branch heard on a USO broadcast from San Francisco yesterday. He is stationed at Treasure Island near the exposition site. He praised the USO for its services.
Chairman Phil Antonoff leads a business men campaign to sell war bonds and stamps. Stores are urged to display flags in front of their business houses during July starting tomorrow with a 15 minute cease at noon each Wednesday. The drive runs throughout July.
Sessions resume at seven tonight in the high school auditorium with Governor George A. Wilson addressing the graduation program Thursday at eight. Captain Alex Miller and Roger Q. Selby accompany the governor to Washington. 243 enrolled, 481 seats requested. Municipal Band provides music. demonstrations on incendiary bombs and blackout safety featured.
Washington county men who passed the induction center physical but were not taken into service immediately will depart for active duty on July 19. The group of 81 leaves at 11 PM from Washington and is headed to Jefferson Barracks St Louis for initial army life.

The weekly Central Park band concert moves to Friday at eight due to the holiday.
