Des Moines officers told of Richard S. Hootman a Cedar Rapids area youth who rushed to complete enlistment papers in Os Moines and secure transportation orders. He and a friend flew to Jefferson Barracks Missouri where he reported for duty Friday.
A Milwaukee railroad freight train wreck near Ute Iowa is blamed on a broken wheel. Nine cars derailed and burned including seven gasoline tanks one soap car and one sulphur car. Fire departments from Ute and Mapleton contained the blaze until morning. No injuries reported. Traffic detoured via North Western lines to Sioux City until reopening.
George V. Denny Jr., moderator of Town Hall of the Air, told a State University of Iowa audience that civilization remains in the dark ages regarding human relations. He cited prejudices and sectarianism as blinding factors and compared today’s divided politics to France before its fall. He argued that despite greater knowledge, people are more bewildered than ever.
In Des Moines the first WAAC training school curriculum shows a 39 hour week with five 7 hour days and four hours of training on Saturdays. Evening study add on two hours most weekdays and faculty may require an extra hour daily. Candidate weekly course includes five7 hour days and four hours Saturday training with weekends off.
DES MOINES the eighth Patten boy joined his father and seven brothers in the navy All formerly of Odebolt la. The latest recruit is Wayne 18 the youngest son who signed up at Portland Ore where the father Clarence 63 is serving at the Portland recruiting station The seven older brothers served on the sunken aircraft carrier Lexington All escaped injury in the explosion shortly before the craft went down during the Coral sea battle Theyre now on furlough at Portland.
Lamoni in southwest Decatur county received 3.48 inches of rain last Saturday and 8.16 inches over the week. The area had 5.08 inches the previous Saturday as a second cloudburst drenched the town. Rain also fell Friday in other parts of the state with additional scattered showers forecast today.
Two army air corps lieutenants from Randolph field Texas Lt Claude K Tucker and Lt E B Mcclarren began a five day cross country leave flying an army trainer. They paused at Chanute field Illinois for a stopover and were greeted by Mcclarren’s Crawfordsville Indiana parents. The pair planned to continue to Randolph field after leaving Chanute, with Lieutenant Tucker visiting the Whisler farm near Iowa City before resuming the journey.
The weather observer reported a 90 degree temperature this afternoon the highest in weeks. Yesterday reached 78 degrees with a low overnight.
Lieutenant General B. M. Ritchie reported relieved of command of the British eighth army in Egypt. A 44 year old veteran of desert tank warfare, Ritchie had led a drive against Rommel but was forced back at Benghazi and defeated southwest of Tobruk opening an axis advance into Egypt.
Mrs Joseph Amrine 72 died at 9 15 this morning at her home 108 South Avenue BR after years of ill health and bedfast condition. Funeral at Shermans funeral home Tuesday 2 PM directed by Dr F W Bastwood with burial at Hillcrest cemetery Brighton. Born January 3 1870 near Wayland she was a Dawson and married Joseph Amrine November 29 1889. Surviving husband two daughters eight grandchildren two great grandchildren and several brothers and sisters.
Soviet front line dispatches report a daring counter attack and hand to hand fighting blocked a German thrust into Sevastopol defenses. Heavy combat continues on Kharkov and Sevastopol fronts as Axis forces push with fresh troops. Red army repels synchronized infantry and tank assaults, exhausting German units in a vital sector.

A Chicago appellate judge D F Matchett was assaulted by five men as he approached the home of the woman to whom his son would wed today. The station reports the attack was a mistaken identity. Matchett is recovering.
In Cairo and Matruh area Rommel’s forces pushed within 15 miles of Matruh as British and German tanks clashed along a widening front. Rommel aimed to break the line and advance toward Suez while Axis columns neared 125 miles inside Egypt, 175 miles from Alexandria.
A war communique reports Chinese forces pulling back from Lishui the last Chekiang air base in range of Tokyo with heavy fighting continuing on the outskirts. Both sides suffered heavy casualties in days of combat including street battles that preceded the withdrawal on Wednesday.
In a jointly issued statement from Washington and London, President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill promised forthcoming operations by the United Nations to divert German strength from Russia. They touted improved prospects and pledged actions to curb axis submarine losses while noting no American combat units have yet engaged.
