Iowa and national farmers increased pig production this year according to the government spring pig crop survey. Iowa reports a 10,648,000 head spring crop for 1959, up 16 percent from last year, while the U.S. total shows about 20 percent growth.
Arthur Neumann contractor said construction on the Swift and Co soybean plant on Euclid avenue near Delaware avenue begins today. Five brick steel buildings will rise including a boiler house extraction building office and warehouses. About 100 men will be employed and the extraction building will be the largest at about five stories.
A whisker derby publicity stunt was approved to run during the Warren county courthouse dedication events. Men and boys will compete for the longest or most abundant beard with the date to be announced, likely around mid August.
The Eckhoff family of Nashua endures a string of misfortunes over two years. Reymond, 18, died from a rare blood ailment. My. Eckhoff died suddenly of a heart attack. illnesses beset two children after tonsil surgery. Amos suffers a skin disease. James has scarlet fever and the home is quarantined. A hospital visit coincides with the smothered deaths of 200 chickens, and this week Mrs. Eckhoff nearly severed her thumb in a cup accident.
The state board of control received $50,000 from the Town Legislature's interim committee for toilet facility improvements across Iowa's six mental institutions and for adding 40 beds at the Cherokee state insane hospital. Inadequate facilities have been a long standing criticism.
A car carrying three youths collided with a light truck west of Clutier on Wednesday evening. Edward Zmolek 18 Milo Zmolek 21 and Ernest Chaloupek 15 died. George Ottsen Cedar Rapids driver suffered cuts and bruises and was hospitalized at Mercy in Cedar Rapids.
Humboldt resident Stephen Dwyer age 23 who gained nationwide fame after navy surgeons transplanted a cornea from a fellow sailor into his eye entered the school for the blind at Vin ton. A steel fragment pierced his eye in 1937 while serving in San Diego and though a cornea transplant occurred April 1 last year his eye was later removed and vision in the other eye remains impaired.
Anna Pehler travels to Denver Colorado this morning returning home after a two week stay with her mother Mrs Herman Pehler.
Washington centennial parade draws several thousand as the Concert band leads, with whiskered uniforms and sunbonneted costumes recalling a century past. Orville Hardin and Mrs. Ralph Scott staged an early settlers tableau with a trailing hound. Saddle theft of Glenn Eldridge’s mule noted. saddle missing, police report shows no trace. Easter in Charge S W Kaster directs the Whisker club parade effort amid a large contingent of participants and carloads to Ainsworth.
The NYA led project to install an illuminated fountain in Central Park announces major progress. A circular pit three feet deep is ready for concrete with forms in place, and pouring expected by early next week. NYA workers also start the control pit for electrical gear, with fountain components arriving for installation.
Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes and city workers paint slanted parking boundaries on all four sides of the square. The new markings will be ready for use on Saturday under updated parking rules.
Funeral services for W. A. Whiting were held yesterday afternoon at the L. A. Jones funeral home under the direction of Dr. F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church. Pallbearers named were Silas Korf Tom Rickey Vernon Witting Frank Pearson Griff Humphrey and Milo Steele. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery.
Iowa urged motorists to file for new licenses by Monday to avoid a required examination. Public Safety Commissioner Karl Fischer warned that those未who miss the July 4 cutoff must pass exams to obtain new licenses.
Earl Ruhe, 49, of Fairfield, a worker on the Lincoln school building, severely wrenched his back in a fall yesterday afternoon. He was transported by ambulance to the county hospital and was expected to be discharged today.
Owen Morgan, 45, of Coralville Heights, died when a scaffold collapsed while painting Eastlawn dormitory at the university. Ray Calta, another painter on the scaffold, saved himself by grabbing a rope as Morgan fell about 30 feet into an air vent.
The county issued marriage licenses today to Harry Schwab of Oxford and Jean nette June Heiserman of Wellman. Rev Kenneth W. Erickson of Barron Wis. and Sylvia A. Hanson of St Peter Minn. were also licensed. These are the first licenses in the county since June 17.
Norfolk Nebraska brothers Charles Bob and Jim Nicola visit the Howard McCleery home and Crawfordsville cousins of Mrs McCleery while touring the east after Charles graduation from Harvard. Bob was a star player on Nebraska’s state championship basketball team. They are sons of Mr and Mrs Lyle Nicola.
Vernon Crull Ralph Shannon George McDaniel and Harry Simpson returned home last night from an unspecified journey, prompting a town welcome. No further details about their trip or destination are provided in the readable text.
Pouring of the twenty foot concrete slab for the new pavement on North Second avenue is finished from East Third street north past the old Heights school site. Workers widen the pavement to full width and add sidewalks, with much done south of the tracks. The dip to the underpass at East Fifth street remains to be paved. Jake Minick began tearing out the old sidewalk along the Blair building on the square to prepare for a new concrete walk on the south side. The existing walk was badly broken and in poor repair.

Slayer of deputies Buelo alias Ray Olson, 306 years old, killed after 13 days on the run in northern Wisconsin. A vast posse of 300 deputies, trappers, woodsmen, and Indian guides hunted Olson since June 17 for the Hayward theft case and two deputy killings. He was shot by possemen near Grandview Bayfield County at daybreak as he tried to flee.
The Roosevelt administration pushed to salvage dollar devaluation powers and secure passage of the 1940 relief bill before Friday midnight. President Roosevelt met with House leader Sam Rayburn and Senate leader Alben Barkley as the Senate had approved the bill with changes and sent it to a conference committee.
Rabenold of Ainsworth bought the lambs sold at the lamb erading at the Burlington stock yards for cash. May Rabenold paid cash for the fine lambs, with J. DPD noted as the Wilson company in the sale. Rabenold is a prominent county stock buyer with recent purchases of many sheep.
Des Moines reports Sheriff Foss Davis of Greene County, a World War II veteran and five term officeholder, appointed warden of the state reformatory for men at Anamosa. He will assume duties July first for a four year term at a $3000 yearly salary plus maintenance. he succeeds W H Frazer, a Democrat, who has held the post for five years.
