Mason City column notes that the Iowa State Brand Creameries sold 20,762,258 pounds of high quality butter in the year ending May 31, 1939. Manager R O Storvick reports to the annual meeting that this total rose by 1,102,691 pounds from the prior year, marking the eleventh consecutive year of gains for the marketing group.
The bankrupt Pointer Brewing Co of Clinton Iowa faces a court sale after Master Newport ruled that creditors with prior claims cannot block the sale since the firm was operated for over two years at their insistence. New debts incurred during operation will take precedence over earlier bondholder claims. Federal Judge Jee will rule on Newport’s report.
Curtis Probable Liquor Control Commission member Curtis Curin of Knoxville Ja is slated to succeed Bernard B AWevler as commissioner. Manley a Democrat and Dick R Lane a Republican will stay on while Andrew Stewart Democrat withdraws in favor of Curtis a Republican appointee of Governor Wilson.
Des Moines reports show a continued wet spell in June with totals well above normal. Specific readings include .65 inches at Ames, .52 at Humboldt, .85 at Newton, .14 at Oskaloosa, .06 at Des Moines, .02 at Charles City, plus showers at Eagle Grove Cherokee and Estherville and a heavy rain at Spirit Lake.
Ottumwa Iowa Wednesday afternoon Charles Nelson 62 a Blakesburg farmer suffered a broken neck in a fall from a wagon load of hay. He was thrown when the wagon jolted into a rut and walked home before being brought to Ottumwa. His condition was fair Thursday.
The ecouncil approved new parking rules for Washington business streets. The ordinance limits curb parking in front of shops to one hour and bans U turns. Signs will guide drivers as regulations take effect after midnight.
The centennial Memorial Fountain in Central Park received a surge of contributions led by J K E Lemmon reporting 63 by noon. Donations from Ss W Livingston Ralph Scott White Shrine Weasler Bros C G Sehmoeller and 13 from People’s Life Insurance Co via Ruebsam agency plus contributions from Oliver C Miller and Lyle Herring.
George Wesley Donovan, 90, died at his Brighton home this morning after a life as a Washington county resident who migrated to town as a baby. Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at his home, with Rev. E S Hebner of the Brighton Methodist church officiating. burial will be in Brighton cemetery. He was born September 17, 1848 near Springfield Ohio and moved to Iowa at thirteen months old with his parents and eight siblings. He married Wealthy Campbell in 1865 and lived on farms near the Scott Dickinson property before settling in town. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Claude Einzsley and sons Herman and Shirley Donovan, with Herman in Des Moines and Shirley deceased at 23.
Citizens are invited to donate car use for booster trips to Riverside Wellman Kalona Keota Brighton Crawfordsville Wayland and other towns. Those with available cars should notify Glenn B. Holden booster trip committee chairman. Trips will be in the evening and schedule announced later.
Publicity committee chaired by Lewis Warren discussed aggressive outreach for Washington’s centennial celebration August 8 to 10. Efforts will expand beyond local residents to reach Chicago California Iowa audiences via press and radio, with booster trips to a dozen area towns and band appearances to drum up attendance.

Wilbur Buzz Richardson age 20 was arrested by Officer Walt Kiesey on forgery charges. He allegedly passed a forged check at a local store six weeks ago and had been out of town until yesterday, with a justice court hearing expected today.

Fred Heffelfinger of Brighton age 56 died at 11 35 this morning at Washington county hospital where he had been a patient since June 9. The body was taken to the Hoskins funeral home at Brighton for funeral arrangements to be announced later. Heffelfinger was born October 29 1882 in Washington county.

Saturday evening July 1 at 8 oclock the Municipal Band performs in Central Park directed by Milo T Sorden with soloist Daryl Fetters. The program features Sousa selections including Stars and Stripes Forever and American Patrol, plus other marches and patriotic pieces.

Mrs. David C. Kilgore, 70, died suddenly at her Brighton home today. She was born 1869 in Louisa County and married in 1888. Survived by husband, daughter, six grandchildren, a brother, five sisters, and several in-laws. Funeral arrangements by Sherman’s Funeral Home in Washington.
After twenty years Tucker & Eicher end partnership in Washington with Claud Tucker buying Leslie Eicher’s share. The business will be renamed Tucker Chevrolet, reflecting Tucker as sole owner. Tomorrow Eicher joins the Iowa state highway commission by gubernatorial appointment, prompting the dissolution and a fresh start.

President Roosevelt warned that a Republican filibuster could block monetary powers as Congress rushed relief and monetary bills toward a midnight deadline. The House then approved a $1,7525,600,000 relief bill for 1940, sending it to the Senate for final action before the fiscal year ends. The measure aims to fund WPA programs with about 1.477 billion for roughly 2.9 million relief clients, within a total WPA appropriation near 2.25 billion for the year.
A private transaction in Cedar Rapids involved the sale of control in Mid-American Casualty Insurance Co to a Kansas City group led by T. W. Garrett Jr. The move, described by Mid-America counsel B. Hickenlooper as strengthening the firm, was between private stockholders.

Bower 94 formerly of Alsey Illinois He is survived by Floyd and Harvey Bower of Washington and Mrs W Johnson of Fairfield along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren The Bowers had lived around Washington since 1909 and the family later moved to Springfield and Princeton with multiple relatives in Illinois and Missouri noted in the obituary
