Sheriff’s Posse Gun Battle With Blackmailers North of Cape Girardeau
On a highway north of Cape Girardeau a sheriff posse of 30 engaged three alleged blackmailers in a running gun battle. After exchanging shots the trio fled into woods, exchanged counterfeit money with two Cape Girardeau businessmen, and escaped on foot leaving their car abandoned. Police found no trace of the men by early afternoon in Madison and St. Francois counties.
