Warns Against Mixing Insecticide With Paint
Ames Iowa half of the fly killing insecticide is wasted if mixed with whitewash or paint. Earle Raun Iowa State College extension entomologist says to apply whitewash first and wait about two weeks before lindane to ensure insect kill. Clean surfaces remove cobwebs and debris for thorough coverage. Use high pressure sprayers to speed cleaning and cover drinking cups and mangers in dairy barns and keep chemicals off feed. Raun recommends lindane or methoxychlor with specified mixing and application rates for barn and exterior surfaces.

Round-Up on Corn Borer Action in Iowa
Ames Iowa corn borer activity peaks in early July with 85 inch tall corn and 50 egg masses per 100 plants triggering spraying. Harold Gunderson of Iowa State College warns moth emergence will vary by region with southern Iowa seeing peak egg laying June 22 to 24 and northern Iowa about a week later. He urges farmers to water fields and monitor egg masses rather than rely on conditions of nearby areas. Rain will not stop egg laying much and may only delay hatching by a day.

Shortage of Chemicals To Hinder Borer Fight
DES MOINES. H E Cook manager of the Iowa Farm Serum Co warned farmers that corn borer control may hinge on available supplies of DDT which are limited He said supplies of the borer fighting chemical will probably be far short of actual needs with large areas of the state likely to require chemical control He advised early ordering so spraying may start at the most advantageous times and wholesalers a chance to make a more orderly distribution.
