The Democratic county convention will be held Friday June 20 at 10 oclock at the Legion rooms in the city hall. About 138 delegates from townships and precincts will attend and choose delegates to the Democratic state and state judicial conventions.
Tomorrow at 9 30 a m girls in fifth to eighth grade will gather at Sunset park pavilion for the YWCA day camp the first of seven weekly sessions. Director Marie Blattner outlines a weeklong camp experience with lunch outdoor cookery crafts games dramatics music and more all in home sleep arrangements.
In New Orleans at Charity hospital, Albertha Allen, 28, gave birth to five premature babies. One boy died shortly after birth. The first baby arrived at 7:20 a.m., the last at 8:05 a.m., with a girl, two boys, and a girl following the initial boy. The mother has three other children.
The United Press summary lists regional corn borer readings with height in inches and egg masses per 100 plants. In New York Harbor the luxury liner Excalibur collides head on with the freighter Colombia. the Excalibur sinks after rescue crews remove 113 passengers and about 150 crew. No injuries reported among passengers or crews. The Colombia catches fire as rescue vessels arrive and battle flames.
Stephen Herbert Hammen infant son of Herbert and Delori Nadene Klein Hammen died Monday shortly after birth. Funeral held Tuesday at Jones funeral home with Rev. K. J. Kinnavey officiating and interment at St. Elizabeths Cemetery in Harper Iowa.
Washington report says house and senate conferees reach a one year extension of the draft law to July 9. The agreement removes Senate and House limits on presidential authority to call men into uniform and adds power to call National Guard and Reserve members into active service as needed. The compromise, aimed at easing Korea era tensions, allows up to 21 months of active service for reserves and guardsmen, with the president sole authority to activate them if conditions warrant. The measure now goes to both chambers for final approval.
Vifty intoximeters have been placed in police cars to test motorists suspected of drunken driving. The device is simple to use on the spot and provides accurate readings of a driver’s blood alcohol content.
Mediators opened talks in Chicago to avert a looming walkout by 250 000 railroad trainmen and conductors opposing a 40 hour week. The 4 000 switchmen’s strike slowed iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes as freight embargoes were placed by several railroads.
Mrs. Elmina McBeth of Mt. Pleasant died Sunday afternoon after being an invalid since August 1949. Services were held this afternoon at the Trenton Methodist church. She is survived by three daughters and two sons, including Mrs. Carl B. Jarrard of Washington.
A four engined Skymaster crashed in a dense forest near Melbourne killing 28 aboard the Australian National Airways flight. Edgar W Forwood of Henley Beach was the sole survivor.
Washington's VEW and VEW auxiliary units received high praise at the 29th annual Iowa Department encampment in Cedar Rapids June 22 to 25. Washington auxiliary bought more hospital equipment than any other post and won best publicity books. New Iowa Department commander Worth Karns of Ames and department auxiliary president Mrs. Angel Snelson of Knoxville were elected. National officers attended, including Mrs. Joseph W. Mann of Detroit. Washington delegates listed include Mrs. Ernest White, Mrs. Sadee McAvoy, Jesse Radda, Everette Burham, Don Bealer, Ralph Borman Jr, Harold Kerr, Marsh Atkinson, Philip Kneen, Truman Hysell, Milo Steele Jr, and Marion McAvoy.
In Rhinelander area a tornadic storm killed three people and injured over 50 as debris and damaged communications were repaired. Names include Kenneth Nyberg and Freda Watson of Rhinelander who drowned, John Schroeder killed in United Wisconsin, with multiple hospitalizations and a declared state of emergency.
Washington hosts a June 29 bike safety parade sponsored by Montgomery Ward Co Chamber of Commerce and Evening Journal. Prizes for best decorated bikes from Ward prizes, no entry fee, registration at Montgomery Ward Sporting Goods, 10 50 a m start, judges include Mayor Glenn Mace Police Chief Carl Hancher and Chamber secretary Lester Hamill.
President Truman ordered air and sea forces to support South Korea against North Korean invasion and to block any Communist attack on Formosa under a UN resolution. MacArthur pledged aid and strong air and naval support as Seoul reports counterattacks and recapture efforts near the capital.

The Congregationalist general council approved a program calling for cooperation with Roman Catholics. The statement, approved by about 2 100 delegates, urged Protestants to work with Catholics when principles are in substantial agreement.
