Wise Smith, longtime national leader of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, comes back to her Hamburg Ida home for a Sunday address at the dedication of a white birch tree in front of the local Christian church where she is a member. Born in Philadelphia, she grew up in Hamburg and attended the public schools.

Mrs. Alice Putnam 73 wife of A E Putnam longtime business figure and mother of Sheriff Harold Putnam died at 1:30 a m at her home 415 East Jefferson street after two weeks of serious illness. She was born December 6 1863 in Adrian Michigan and lived in Washington since 1912. Survived by husband four sons Clyde John Paul and Sheriff Putnam plus seven grandchildren. Funeral plans awaiting word from two sons in New Orleans and the Virgin Islands.
Thirty-one members of the Foursquare gospel church in Moline attended the revival meeting at the Washington tabernacle yesterday evening. They participated in the program and some furnished special music. Mrs Isabelle Hall the evangelist delivered an illustrated sermon and will give another similar talk Sunday evening.

Alvin Hesseltine Jr three months old died yesterday afternoon in University hospital Iowa City after failing health since Wednesday. The body rests at Sherman’s funeral home with services Sunday at two in the Christian church Brighton led by Rev R W Fillmore. Burial in Brighton cemetery. He was born April 6 1937 to Alvin and Cecil DeWolf Hesseltine. Surviving are his parents and grandparents Mr and Mrs Frank Hesseltine of Washington and Mr and Mrs William DeWolf of Brighton.
J Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI, will address an Iowa law enforcement meeting in Des Moines within two months. Attorney General John H. Mitchell announced the event to improve cooperation among state, county, and local agencies. Hoover will invite staff from the state bureau of investigation sheriffs deputies county attorneys and city police.

Two New York bank robbers, Robert J. Suhay and Glenn Applegate, were found guilty by a federal court jury of first degree murder in the slaying of G-man Wimberly W. Baker in Topeka Kansas. The verdict automatically fixes the death penalty.

Funeral services for Harry Mellinger will be Monday at nine in Holy Trinity Catholic church Richmond. Burial follows at Sharon Hill cemetery north of Kalona. Mellinger, a prominent lumber dealer here, died suddenly Thursday evening at his home. Mr and Mrs Ira Saunders of Brighton were in Washington today.
John Yousling joins the Washington Municipal band as a pianist and versatile reed player. He comes from Cedar Falls where he studies music at State Teachers College and works at Sorden music store. Tonight he performs accordion in Washington.
