Washington Bicentennial bust for time capsule monument

In Central Park Washington marked by a Houdon bust to be attached to the time capsule monument during the Bicentennial observance. The bust, cast by Creative Enterprises of Sparta Wisconsin using space age materials, honors George Washington with underwriting by Kiwanis A.M.ers. Unveiling is planned for July 4 despite production challenges.

Leach Campaign Schedule With Washington Visits

Republican U S congressman candidate Jim Leach will spend Tuesday in Washington County. He greets residents at 3 PM at Frontier Cafe and hosts a 7 30 PM open house coffee at Mrs Nate Young home. Supreme Court upholds mandatory retirement for state police

The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 1 that civil servants can be forced to retire at a set age even if they can still perform. It upheld Massachusetts law forcing State police to retire at 50, the lowest retirement age for state police in the country, finding a reasonable basis under the Equal Protection Clause.

New Bank Facility Planned in Washington Area

National Bank of Washington officials Richard Weeks and Taunce Mathiason announced plans to build a new bank facility in the 300 block of S Iowa. Construction should begin in September on three properties north of Derby station, replacing the 102 E Main operation and including a drive-in.

Mount Union Bank Robbery Leads to Three Arrests

Three suspects were seized minutes after the Iowa State Bank robbery in Mount Union. A sawed-off shotgun was used, a sack and ski mask described the bandits. Officers recovered the gun and cash from a car as FBI agents prepare to review the case.

Heat wave grips coasts with record highs and fires

Mercury soared across California and New England as 90 plus degrees lingered. Firefighters battled 100 degree heat and brush fires while crowds used pools and flooded hydrants. In Boston officials reported water dips after thousands opened hydrants and a 95 degree high sparked sweltering conditions. Tornadoes and floods struck Indiana Ohio and Kansas with damage and a child dead in Overland Park floods.

Supreme Court rules private nonreligious schools must admit blacks

The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, holds that the 1870 federal law requires commercially operated nonreligious private schools to admit Black students, excluding church-affiliated schools. The ruling, led by Justice Potter Stewart, targets desegregation in hundreds of all-white private schools and affects the Southern Independent School Association representing over 375 schools.

Iowa public funds earn 157 million in idle funds interest

State Auditor Lloyd Smith reports eight year total 1967–1974 idle funds earned by Iowa political subdivisions exceeded 157 million. In 1974 alone they earned 39.1 million, up 12.6 million from 1973 driven by revenue sharing investments and higher rates. Cities led with 19.4 million, counties 10.8 million, districts 6.9 million.
