City police recovered a pickup owned by Robert Jones of Brighton after it stalled on a lot at North Seventh Avenue and East 11th Street. The thief fled on foot. Jones reported the loss at 3 45 a m. Police seek a 1959 Rambler station wagon stolen from Ken Crone at 1003 N Second Ave after midnight.

Balloon flight aims to cross Atlantic from Lakehurst
Karl Thomas 27 of Troy Michigan pilots the Spirit of 76 a 10 story balloon drifting off New Jersey headed toward Paris at about 50 mph. Six prior balloon attempts ended in death. Mercer 66 Composer of Standards Dies in Los Angeles
Johnny Mercer, famed songwriter behind Moon River and Days of Wine and Roses, died Friday at 66 from brain surgery complications. A Savannah native, he wrote about 1500 songs and 75 hits, won four Academy Awards, and helped found Capitol Records. He leaves a widow Elizabeth, two children Armanda and Jeff, and three grandchildren. burial will be in Savannah.

Three held after Mount Union bank robbery in Iowa
Three men from Mediapolis and Morning Sun were held on state and federal charges after a car pursuit following a $12,000 robbery at Peoples Savings Bank in Crawfordsville and a prior $5,000 Ainsworth Bank robbery. Authorities found a sawed off shotgun and money in the vehicle. Eyewitnesses described two masked men entering the bank. Local trooper Lewis pursued the suspect vehicle and ordered the occupants to exit with hands up.

Birds hitchhiked 260 miles inside van in Missouri
B D Duwa of rural Washington found sparrows nested beneath the floor of his 1976 Dodge Maxi van during a wool buying trip to northern Missouri. After crossing the Iowa Missouri line he heard chirping sounds, and a pair of young birds rode about 260 miles in the chassis before surfacing.
