Supreme Court Reverses Wage Law for State Local Workers
The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling by Justice Rehnquist, overruled the 1974 amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act that extended minimum wage and overtime rules to state and local government employees. It held Congress exceeded its powers by intruding on state sovereignty, reversing a lower court dismissal and invalidating the wage and reporting requirements. The challenge was led by the National League of Cities, National Governors Conference, and several communities.

Iowa considers former Kentucky official for Iowa Penitentiary post

Move Brewer to western prison for protection
State corrections officials say convicted murderer Ronald Brewer, 37, will be moved from the Iowa State Penitentiary at Fort Madison to a prison in an unnamed western state to shield him from alleged death threats. Brewer is serving a life sentence for the Anamosa couple murder after escaping from a guard at the State Men's Reformatory and also has a second degree murder conviction.

Assault charge filed against Brighton man
Robert Alan Fisher of 305 South Harrison in Brighton was charged with assault and resisting due process after an incident at Nash home Wednesday night. His bond was set at 2250 dollars. Fisher struck L. E. Nash who fell against a stove corner and was injured. Fisher refused to heed warnings from Brighton marshal Elmore. deputy Schmidt subdued him. Both men were taken to Washington County hospital for treatment.

Ten year sentence to Washington man Barnes
Jack D. Barnes of Washington was ordered to serve up to 10 years in the Anamosa Mens Reformatory after revoking his suspended sentence for a larceny in the nighttime conviction. Judge L R Carson also revoked Dennis P. DeWitt’s deferred judgment and sentenced him to a one year suspended jail term with two years probation. Jacqueline M. Flake received a 12 month deferred judgment on an OMVUI conviction and Timothy Brashaw’s sentencing was continued to July 2.
