The town of Sibley has applied to the Public Works Administration for aid to fund a $151,000 upgrade of the municipal power plant. The proposal covers a $53,000 turbine plus cooling tank work and plant enlargement.
Approximately 1,500 Eagles registered for the state convention in Fort Madison. President Edward W. Malzahn of Sioux City named committees as bids for the 1939 gathering were floated from Council Bluffs and Clinton.
P H Donlon of Ruthven former Emmetsburg postmaster Palo Alto county legislator and bank figure died after a lingering illness He was an early county school superintendent and was unmarried The funeral will be Monday in Ruthven.
Harvard anthropologist Professor Inest A. Hooton told a University of Iowa audience that Americans are growing taller and slimmer but lack the sturdy constitutions of previous generations. He credits improved medical care for lower infant mortality among long, thin babies who once did not survive.
District Judge T A Beardmore overruled a defense motion for a new trial for George Bazookas and his wife Pugenia both 65 convicted at Worthwood last month on arson. Sentence is scheduled for Monday at Northwood. The case stemmed from a fire that damaged the Boston case.
Keenan an assistant United States district attorney in charge of kidnaping cases will be the principal speaker at the second annual peace officers conference at Town City July 11 16. Attorney General John Mitchell also calls for the event under a joint state and University of Iowa sponsorship with sessions on addresses discussions target practice firearms and chemical use in the afternoons.

Emmetsburg reports four youths injured when a tornado demolishes a barn on the Henry Lammers farm nine miles north. The storm leaves only minor damage to a large modern structure nearby. The four boys milking cows were pinned in wreckage for over an hour before rescue.
Washington's temperature reached 95 degrees, one degree above the prior day, with night lows at 68. Forecast calls for cooler weather tonight and Sunday with possible thunderstorms. Rain totals included Forest City 2.48 inches, Charles City 1.7, Decorah 0.97, and Dubuque 0.49 inches.
Governor Clyde Tingley led a wide searching party in the Sandia mountains near Albuquerque for Medill McCormick 21 missing since the hike with Richard Whitmer 21. Whitmer died after a fall at Silent Mountain while McCormick’s fate remained uncertain as officials, guardsmen, CCC enrollees and volunteers combed crevices and ledges. McCormick’s mother Ruthene McCormick Sims awaited news at home.
Mrs J A Green 57 a lifelong Columbus Junction resident died at her West Hill home at 10 this morning after a weeklong illness from a stroke of paralysis Funeral services likely Monday Maude Luckey daughter of Union Township pioneers was born on a farm northwest of Columbus Junction in September 1880 She married J A Green and the couple lived in Columbus Junction She was a Presbyterian and member of the Rebekah and Royal Neighbor lodges Surviving are her husband two daughters Mrs Russell Taylor of Columbus Junction Mrs Arthur Hanson of West Liberty a son Clifton at home a brother Carl Luckey of Riverside and a sister Mrs Charles Glaspey of Independence
Keota June 25 Funeral plans outline for Donald Greiner of Washington and Pearl Bennett of Seventy-six township east of here after their truck crashed near Chicago Thursday. Bennett to be buried in Keota cemetery after 2:30 Sunday service at Frank Marsh funeral home. Greiner to be buried at a later date, 8:30 Monday mass at Clear Creek St Peter and Paul Catholic church.
Mrs Amos Rankin fell and cut her head but is much improved. Her daughter Mrs Don Bell has been ill and Mrs Densmore Guthrie of Moline Illinois is here to help care for them.
Des Moines reported 352 drivers who had been drinking among 1 907 people in 975 Iowa accidents in May. There were 382 killed and 728 injured, with 32 fatalities in 29 crashes. Ages ranged from 15 to over 65. deaths included 7 women. Cars, pedestrians, non collision incidents, train autos, fixed objects, and a bicycle collision accounted for the rest.
Iowa Republicans met this week to craft a platform for the July 15 state convention. They seek a positive agricultural program and to counter the New Deal, with L. J. Dickinson possibly writing the platform. Debate lingers over the sales tax exemption and the homestead benefit, with party leaders wary of Democratic credit.

In Miles City Montana on June 25 the Chicago Milwaukee and St Pauls Olympian collided with a CCC special west of town. One CCC youth was killed and another injured. the injured was taken to Forsythe hospital. None of Olympian passengers were hurt. The crash damaged 209 yards of track and delayed traffic for hours.
A Des Moines press listing shows BE Stewart as Republican nominee with no primary opposition and Amos Stout Jr as Democratic candidate, but county auditor findings reveal no legal nominations for state representative on the Democratic ticket. In eight counties write-ins appeared. Washington listed Stout, yet votes show no official nominating tally. Other offices show several write-in votes for auditor treasurer clerk of court sheriff recorder county attorney and coroner with scattered names.

Federal Judge Charles A. Dewey upheld a district court injunction against trespass at the Maytag plant in Newton. He gave CIO until July 11 to file a motion for reconsideration, confirming Newton Judge Bechly's jurisdiction and remanding the case. Removing sitdown strikers would require an enforcing order and risks contempt penalties.
Funeral services for Charles W. Sims of Cedar Rapids were held at Riverside Methodist church with Masonic rites. He died after injuries from a fall from a moving Rock Island work train near Washburn Iowa. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Also noted were a home talent play on June 28, a library donation of twenty two volumes, and the injury of Bob Hayes who broke both bones in his left arm.
