Doris Mae Wood, 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Wood of Marshalltown, reopens her long history of injuries with a new opien leg after a fall at home. Despite ten fractures, she remains undaunted and cheerful about her condition.
Dr. Edward L. Rohlf veteran Waterloo practitioner collapsed mid speech while addressing a luncheon of the northern district Iowa Hospital association on cooperation of doctor and hospital. His condition is not regarded as critical.
In Cedar Falls Justice W S Willard presided over the six member jury that failed to reach a verdict on Hans Wagner charged with keeping a public nuisance due to his coon hounds. The vote was four to two for acquittal after testimony from twenty five witnesses. Wagner threatened to take the case to the supreme court if needed.
Red Oak reports Ralph Worstell says Diavolo the parachute jumper will not be allowed to perform at the July 4 celebration. O W Young Chicago aero nautical inspector confirms the ruling after last year’s fatal parachute failure involving Harry Armstrong.
Iowans designated to receive diplomas from Assistant Secretary of War Louis Johnson in Washington include War college Lieut. Col. Thomas Watson of Oskaloosa. At the Army Industrial college Maj. Martin E. Griffin of Iowa City Maj. Ruel E. Hewitt of Iowa City Maj. Don L. Hutchins of Van Meter Capt. Thos. RE. Mahoney of Council Bluffs and Maj. Fred W. Miller of Manchester are listed.
Edwin J Sid ney 78 longtime publisher of the Adair County Free Press died at Methodist hospital Des Moines after an operation. He was elected to the Iowa house in 1906 and 1912 and served as Iowa Press association treasurer in 1936. Survived by wife and children Kenneth H and Joan E both of Greenfield and daughter Mrs John Whetzke of Greenfield.
DES MOINES Dr Carl F Jordan of the Iowa state health department warned that while Iowa may see many infantile paralysis cases this year the public exaggerates the danger. He urged calm and practical efforts and said fear spikes yearly from July through fall.
Charles Gaeta, a restaurant man in Iowa City, reported a letter demanding $2000 to spare his 11 year old son Jimmy. Armed men guarded Gaeta's Lone Tree home after the threat. Sheriff Don McComas and postal officers joined the investigation on Thursday.
Dr Bert E. Roothe, current assistant professor of English at Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls, is named head of the English department replacing Prof A Lynch. Dr Gerald F. Knoff of Clinton Conn is named director of rebellious activities succeeding Dr Harold A Bosley. President R Latham announced the appointments.
Governor Kraschel delayed a fishing trip amid a Maytag strike at Newton. He stated no action would be taken against the 300 workers who seized the plant, as 1,400 idle workers faced a weeklong stoppage. The conflict centers in Jasper County with the governor in contact from Harlan.

Washington state hit 94 degrees yesterday as Des Moines forecasts only slight heat relief this weekend. Two heat related Iowa deaths were reported with storms causing widespread damage including 1.75 inches of rain in Estherville and $100,000 in losses in north central Iowa.
Funeral services for Charles William Sims of Riverside were held at the Riverside Methodist church with Rev. Stuart C. Peterson in charge. Sims died after a fall from a moving Rock Island work train near Washburn and subsequent double pneumonia at the Presbyterian hospital in Waterloo. He was born July 11 1868, married Grace McLaughlin in 1895, with children Clifford and Erskin. Surviving are his wife, son, four grandchildren and four brothers. Masonic rites followed at Riverside Cemetery.
A Japanese official spokesman announced the abolition of extraterritorial rights for all foreigners in areas of China controlled by Japan. He cited an incident involving an American missionary and said foreigners there would be under Japanese law with no special privileges, while the U.S. government in Washington pledged to preserve extraterritorial rights in all of China.
John Killian of the Washington Township 4-H club was elected president of the Washington County 4-H Boys at the annual meeting in the G A R hall. Orville Hradek Lime Creek was vice president and Robert Macon Dutch Creek named secretary. Marion Timmins Cedar township treasurer and Alvin Horak Jackson township historian. Fire prevention talks and plans for the 4 H fair followed. Ice cream served as rain shortened attendance to about forty.
Salt Lake City man Ben Harmon 54, alleged vice lord, shot and killed himself at his home as a grand jury investigation into vice conditions reached a climax. Harmon had been indicted last week by a special grand jury alongside former Mayor Erwin and Attorney Pearce.
A daily vacation Bible school runs at Coppock this week with 23 children enrolled. The Bible school program will be given in the church Sunday morning after the Sunday school hour. Sunday school at 9 30 and program at 10 30. Mrs Jacob De Koning of Washington and Mrs Emma Merrick of Coppock teach with help from missionary Jacob DeKoning of Washington.
Raymond R. Schantz of Pleasant Hill Iowa will have funeral services at 2 and 2:30 PM Saturday at his parents home and the Wayland Mennonite church. Interment is in Eicher cemetery. He was foreman at the Panhandle Eastern Gas booster station and died by hanging, with no note or clear motive.
Richard Hohl of the state highway patrol conducts drivers and chauffeurs license tests in Washington today replacing R. Rhoades who moved to accident investigation. Hohl, formerly stationed at Burlington West Liberty and Mt. Pleasant, has shifted twelve times in three years as part of periodic personnel moves. He joked about buying a trailer to reduce moving costs.
Max Schmeling's condition was reported improved at Polyclinie hospital as of June 24. Dr. Robert E. Brennan said Schmeling had a comfortable night and that his pulse and temperature are normal, though he remains under care following the defeat by Joe Louis.
John Jaeger aged 68 died from a self inflicted gunshot wound suffered at the Eagles club in Clinton. He fired the shot while seated in a chair and was found by a custodian.
