Man slashes tires to stop pollution says birds ordered him

A Minneapolis man Daniel Brian Fox, 24, was charged after slashing more than $1,000 in tires. He told police his crusade came from his two pet birds who said cars cause pollution and that the birds could not breathe.

Strikers Defy Court Orders In Boston Standoff

Striking state workers stayed off the job a third day in open defiance of court orders. Union leaders face court today for ignoring back-to-work orders. Union head Howard Doyle refused to order a return, as picketers with donuts and coffee gathered outside state buildings at dawn. A Danvers State Hospital volunteer said she had been there since Sunday and wished to go home.

Oil Spill Hits St. Lawrence River In Alexandria Bay

A tug Eileen C and barge Nepco 140 struck Comfort Island shoal at 1:30 am, spilling about 250000 gallons of No 6 fuel oil into the St. Lawrence River. Coast Guard reports vary, with 5,000 barrels (50 gal each) or 1.3 million gallons initially cited. three holds ruptured but leakage halted. Booms deployed to contain the spill near Mason Point, five miles from the incident.

Protest at Kissinger Vorster talk in West Germany

White students with blackened faces protested outside the hotel where South African Prime Minister Vorster waited to meet U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The small demonstration followed Kissinger and Vorster arriving in Bavaria for talks seen as urging negotiation to end southern Africa’s racial issues. The protesters, who traveled hours, used burnt cork and gathered near the Bavarian Forest village before Kissinger’s arrival.

Dempsey Listed in Fair Condition After Pole Accident

Jack Dempsey, a 48 year old Iowa Southern lineman from Washington, was seriously injured when a 30 foot pole broke while he worked atop it two miles north of Crawfordsville on highway 218. He is listed in fair condition at University Hospital in Iowa City with possible pelvic injuries and a broken left ankle.

Property values rise as tax base increases in 1976

Washington County's tax base rose by 9.6 million to 359,976,898 in 1976. Agricultural property totals 196 million (about 55 percent), residential 21 percent, with commercial, industrial and utility making up the rest. Commercial real estate rose 23 percent. agriculture's share fell slightly. Per acre farm land value now 461, up from 260 in 1971. typical housing value 17,772, up from 11,138 in 1971.

Investigators in Crawfordsville and Wayland pursue leads after the Peoples Savings Bank of Crawfordsville robbery. Owens elected IPPA director and district park post

Marlan Owens of rural Columbus Junction was elected Tuesday night to the board of directors of the Iowa Pork Producers Association. He will serve a one year term as the District 9 IPPA state park board representative, succeeding Bob Gatton. Owens, a former Washington County Pork Producers president, was named to the state post during Pork Appreciation Day at Oskaloosa High School. Cindy Greene of Columbus Junction was named District Park Queen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Bob Greene, and will compete for state honors next winter as Louisa County Park Queen. About 200 attendees included Washington County leaders and district Porkette officers Celeste Horn Alberta Bonar and Pat Johnson.
