Residents in Lake Park uncovered part of the town well while digging water mains on Main Street. Local oldtimers say the well was abandoned about 40 years ago, proving the old town pump was not a fable.
Kenneth Cook nine son of Mr and Mrs Morris Cook of New Providence was riding a tractor driven by his father when his left foot caught in a lever. Two toes were severed doctor Gray of Eldora sewed one back on.
Mount Vernon presents George Bernard Shaw's Candida as the second Cornell Summer Theater production. Ruth Miller of Morningside College directs the cast led by Constance Root of the Cleveland Play House as stage manager.
Safety Commissioner Harry Swenson announced a federal permit to install a police radio system in Ottumwa. The system is expected to be in use by late July.
Henry Ewoldt, 22, of Algona, drowned near the Ritz hotel dock at Bayside Clear Lake while bathing with Katherine Burgess of Des Moines. Ewoldt's body was recovered by Frank Vernon of Clear Lake at about 2:30 am in 12 feet of water after the incident occurred a little after 1 am Wednesday.
Des Moines officials touted a new record after a 48 hour stretch with no traffic related injuries. The milestone drew attention from local police and city safety programs as detectives continue to monitor accident trends.

Max Schmeling of Germany lay in a New York hospital today with severe spinal injuries after losing to Joe Louis in two minutes four seconds of the first round. Schmeling claimed a kidney blow felled him, though referee Arthur Donovan ruled it not a foul. The bout generated over $1.015 million in gross receipts with Louis taking $351,622 and Schmeling $175,622.
Berlin observers shift from praise to alarm as Max Schmeling fights the loss to Joe Louis. Reports suggest Schmeling may be seriously hurt after the knockout, amid controversy over delays delaying a rematch.

The Baptist church Vacation Bible School will close Friday evening with a program at 6 o'clock. Pupils, parents, officers and teachers are invited to the event and exhibits of handwork will be shown followed by light refreshments. The program marks a successful year with over 100 enrollees under Pastor Rev. I. Fredmund and a staff of twelve teachers and assistants.
The University of Iowa will hold only one Brummler convocation for the award of degrees and certificates on August 5, ending the eight weeks of teaching. Three weeks of independent study for graduate students run August 8 to August 26 without a ceremony.
Washington records 87 degree high and 65 low as heat continues in Iowa. Iowa weather remains 18 degrees above normal with limited relief in the northwest. Minor showers yesterday brought up to .70 inch in Iowa City and about a half inch in Ames Marshalltown Albia Burlington Davenport and Keokuk.
Rev. T. C. Metbohm of Trinity Lutheran church announces that the daily vacation Bible school will close Friday at eight oclock with program and exhibits. About 40 children have attended over three weeks, and tomorrow nights Parents night will feature the play Its Worth It and a repeat of demonstrations from the school.

Yesterday Humboldt hit 99 degrees while Atlantic recorded 64 degrees the coolest. The warmth benefits the corn crop as temperatures have been higher over the last two days.
Official notice in the Journal calls the county convention of Washington County Democrats. Delegates elected at the June 6 primary will meet at eleven in the morning on Saturday July 2 to select delegates for the state convention in Des Moines July 28 and the state judicial convention August 4 plus the district judicial convention in Osceola.
Washington grants total 5400 for a project costing about 12900 with remainder to be shared by Washington city and county. The plan aims to begin this year after the August 1936 application and includes broader recovery act funding activities nationwide. Local and state officials expect construction to proceed soon.
Raymond Schantz of Wayland was found dead at a Pleasant Hill Illinois plant. He was thirty, survived by wife Alice Beckman and daughter Joanne Ray, with funeral plans pending and body to be brought to Wayland. The family had moved from Truro Iowa to Pleasant Hill last fall.
