New officeholders include Ray Murphy as chairman of the state insurance board. The last legislature’s laws take effect, including a chain store tax up to 10 percent on gross receipts.

Joiner Davison, a 75 year old banker from Wapello, was convicted by a district court jury in Burlington on the charge of receiving deposits while the Commercial Bank of Wapello was insolvent. He was sentenced to a penitentiary term not to exceed 10 years and filed a notice of appeal.
F Lytle makes public a letter urging Governor Herring to appoint three special assistant attorneys general to prosecute graft fraud or corruption in any state court. The letter stresses accountability and a statewide graft probe.
Cleveland June 24 2 500 workers were thrown out of employment as 18 large bakeries closed to prevent a strike spreading from three companies. They padlocked doors and told staff not to return until the threat ends leaving locals to rely on grocers with in house bakeries.
The Missouri Synod Lutheran church in convention in Cleveland urged methods to balance the budget and cut the national deficit of 675587 dollars. The appropriations committee reported a current deficit of 114000 dollars more than three years ago.

Spirit Lake reports the drowning of Eddie Wenner 21 of Waterloo while two companions Jean Dunkelberg and Dora Merkley were rescued after clinging to an overturned sail-boat canoe. Jack Firth swam a mile to summon help. the search began after the trio overturned in a gusty wind near Templar park. The girls saved themselves but Wenner did not reach shore.
Two youths, William Genvicke 18 and Richard Reynolds 24, drowned while swimming in the Cedar River near Cedar Rapids yesterday. Their bodies had not been recovered by early today.
In Waverly Iowa on June 24 a vacation trip ended in a fatal automobile crash north of town. Al Faulstich 33 of St. Louis died and a hitchhiker in the car was killed as well.

The diary lists Wohse names and details moonlight car rides as prosecutors seek a grand jury indictment while Thompson is held in a secret jail amid lynching threats.
Dr. Charles A. Hawley of the State University of Iowa urged that education alone is not enough and that religion and character are vital. He cited early American religious settlement and modern crime rates to argue for religious influence alongside schooling during Founders Week at a Y M C A event.
The Court of Errors and Appeals of New Jersey will decide before September whether Bruno Hauptmann faces the electric chair or a new trial.
