The mansion once owned by Leo Davidson and now a Los Angeles broker sold to Louis Kaplan president of Kaplan Wholesale Grocery Co for $20,000. The estate includes seven lots a tennis court a swimming pool and a children's playhouse.
Mrs. P. D. Van Fleet suffered severe burns to hands and arms when a gasoline stove exploded as she filled it. The resulting fire caused about 500 dollars damage to her home.
An ordinance restricts beer sales to the business district after July 1 and requires taverns to close at 11:30 p m. Dancing is prohibited and music after 9 p m is barred. License fees set at 250 dollars.
Waterloo Chamber of Commerce leaders endorsed plans for a new federal building and instructed secretary Far1 A Warner to contact congressmen urging support for an appropriation.
Sheriff Tremmel of Sigourney and deputies arrested one man and four women, all said to be gypsies, after an elderly farmer Ingalls north of Talleyrand reported a theft of over 100 dollars. The stolen money was not recovered, but a gypsy woman aged about 45 was named by the victim as taking the funds.
Former Hershey State and Firet Trust and Saving Bank depositors appeared at the Central Sav ings Bank window in Muscatine in large numbers to claim their share of an $110 000 dividend made available by the trustees of the defunct institutions.
Des Moines reports a girl baby shortage with a larger boy baby shortfall noted by Dr. Mae Habenicht. She notes 18 child placing institutions in the town have long waiting lists and most couples on the lists request girl babies, a longstanding pattern.
Civil war veteran and retired farmer Newton-Gardner Dodge, 41, died at his home here after a fall caused by a fractured chin. He enlisted in the war at Webster City Indiana at age 17 and had lived in Jasper county for 68 years.
Des Moines reports Reginald Tracy of Manchester Iowa must hang November 29 for the murder of his wife. Accomplice Mrs Flossie Fear of Farley Iowa is serving life in Rockwell City women’s reformatory.
A police investigation into a woman's purse hat gloves and a note found on the Mississippi river bank led to the admission by a local theater manager that an advertising man staged the suicide hoax as a publicity stunt.
W L Etter of Sigourney Iowa longtime Democratic leader and publisher of the Sigourney Review for over 25 years died at age 75. He retired in 1928. His widow serves as national Democratic committeewoman for Iowa.

At a special meeting the Washington city council adopted a report endorsing machine mixed oil treated crushed rock surfacing for streets. The plan uses crushed limestone with asphaltic road oil, laid on prepared bases and compacted by traffic.

Secretary Clarence Logan of the Washington Chamber of Commerce urges locals to keep cars off downtown streets on Saturday nights when crowds from the country and nearby towns come for trade and the band concert. City Marshal Blaine Holmes supports the request, noting parking is a growing issue and that avoiding street parking could greatly help visitors.
The Y P C A Keokuk presbytery holds its annual convention at the United Presbyterian church Crawfordsville June 26 and 26 with speakers Rev. J M Findley Brown and Rev. Lawrence Bush. Ninety-six members have replied to attend the Journals party at the Washington Country club on July 28. Rollin B. Organ of Chicago turns 91 that day and plans to be there with rings on his fingers. The gathering includes members from Washington, Keota, Brighton, Ainsworth, West Chester and Chicago with eighteen new enrollees and two latest members W. A Whiting and A. K. Roe. There are now 208 living members, with sixteen regrets from several towns.
In an open letter from Washington June 22 Senator Huey Long urged President Roosevelt to implement the tax the rich program from the new deal policy. Long predicted enacting the tax would boost Roosevelt’s chances for reelection and showed more conciliatory tones toward the administration than earlier remarks.
Frantic appeals by relief administration colonists in Alaska prompted a senate investigation. A report said nearly all 2,000 colonists are sick with only one physician and two nurses, spurring Hopkins to report immediately on colony conditions.
Des Moines June 22 Governor Herring said no reason for a special session of the legislature now and denied rumors of a session to coordinate Iowa relief with the new social security bill. He said he is not contemplating calling one.
Washington county osteopaths attended the third district osteopathic meeting in Ottumwa yesterday led by Dr. Henrietta Griffith Dr. Preston L. Etter and Dr. A W Clow from Washington with Dr H L Gordon of Brighton and Dr D R Steninger of West Chester also present.
Gerald Thompson, 25, a machinist, admitted murdering Mildred Hallmark, 19, in Peoria after she resisted his advances. He said she bit him on the hand and he struck her, as officers placed the bloody garments before him to elicit the confession.
Grand total shows one county by county tally at 455 million dollars, excluding value of 15 million pounds of food, blankets, mattresses, cotton and other materials sent to Iowa via Federal Surplus Relief Corporation. Also omitted are Iowa’s shares in two river improvement programs and the new post office construction drive.
Iowa’s total federal outlay to the state since the New Deal began surpasses 455 million dollars. About 142 million came as gifts from AAA and related programs. the rest are loans and guarantees. Programs include CCC, FERA relief, CWA jobs, and the RFC aiding state needs through 1935.
The Iowa Supreme Court reversed a Keokuk county decision in a dispute over collateral held by Washington State Bank against the closed First Savings Bank of Richland. The court instructed the district court to allow Washington to retain the security until all claims against Richland are satisfied.
The Washington city council awarded seven beer licenses for the coming year starting July 1. Recipients include Frank L. Casey, Nardy & Sodini, Cantoni & Cantoni, Hugh A. Dougall, Harvey & Warfel, Mrs. Edith Beaty, and CC M Denison. Six went to current sellers. Harvey & Warfel are new to the list and plan to operate in the Congress hotel room once occupied by Harold Deimerly. The council withheld the licenses pending on-site inspection for compliance with the new beer ordinance including partitions and interior requirements.
Governor Clyde L. Herring accepted the resignation of E. H. Mulock as Iowa relief administrator. Ralph Kittinger will temporarily carry on duties. Mulock, Des Moines mayor since 1938, cited business and personal reasons for leaving amid relief program changes.

Hollywood observers debate a new, painless inheritance tax as a stand in for rich individuals. The tone mocks Huey Long while suggesting a surprise wake up call from the president to Huey.
