Local state and federal officers offered no new developments on the Crawfordsville bank robbery as the investigation continues. Iowa Southern lineman Jack Dempsey, 714 N. 4th Ave, was injured when a pole broke while he climbed near Ainsworth and was rushed to an Iowa City hospital with details unavailable at press time.
Wednesday will feature Ridiculous Day in Washington with zany costumes and sales promotions. Sidewalk booths fill the business district as merchants and employees dress to lift shoppers mood. Parade begins at 4 15 p.m.
The program for Wednesday June 23 at 8 p.m. features guest director Gary McCurdy and pieces like God Bless America and In the Mood. Also listed are Belmont Overture, Beer Barrel Polka, Winchester March, Star Spangled Banner, and more, with the concert held in Central Park. Youth employment notes urge more summer job openings through the Youth Employment Service at the Chamber of Commerce, with an office at 112 East Washington Street and hours 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday.
Items for the Washington County bicentennial time capsule are shown in the Coast to Coast window on the square. Residents may sign the bicentennial scrolls for 25 cents at Central Park near the bandstand, with funds funding the monument bust of George Washington. Signed scrolls must be turned in to Jackie Wells at the YWCA by Friday.
Doris Wellington of Mount Pleasant, 33, convicted of lying to the grand jury probing her husband's death, was sentenced to 20 years in Rockwell City Women’s Reformatory. Judge Cahill placed her on probation after perjury conviction on April 21 in Henry County District Court. Walter Wellington died in an explosion behind a Mount Pleasant bank last September.
A Woodbury County jury convicts Jerry Allen Mark of four counts of first degree murder for the Nov. 1 Cedar Falls family slayings. The 21-day trial, moved from Black Hawk County, featured extensive testimony and involved 66 witnesses and 450 exhibits.
Senate Public Works Committee opened hearings on replacing Locks and Dam 26 on the Mississippi near Alton Illinois with a new dam and downstream lock. Nelson argues reports show no imminent failure while Mondale Stevenson and others push the project as essential for cheaper barge transport and regional economies.
North English family of three injured in a one car crash one mile north of Keota Monday at 3:45 p.m. Stephen Thurman 17 drove Kay Miller 46 and Larry 11 into a ditch and field driveway, then into the far ditch. All were taken to Mercy Hospital Iowa City. Steve and Kay seriously injured. Larry not seriously hurt. Thurman charged with failure to have control.

The Washington City Council approved a $13 520 Monroe Calculator Co billing machine to replace an outdated unit and awarded a bulk gasoline contract to Sun Oil Co via local distributor William E Guenther for 20 000 gallons at 50 1 cents per gallon. The new fuel storage will be at the old highway garage and may cut fuel costs with federal gas tax rebates.
A two car collision on a gravel road eight miles north of Washington near Horning's corner sent two related individuals to area hospitals at about 9 45 a m Monday. The driver of one car fell asleep causing the crash. One victim was taken to Mercy Hospital Iowa City with head injuries and the other to Washington County Hospital with minor cuts and abrasions. Total vehicle damage was about eight thousand dollars.
Washington man Bill Nelson, 21, fell about 50 feet inside a Cargill grain bin in Iowa City early today, injuring his neck. He was pulled through the bin opening and carried down stairs to ground level. he is listed in stable condition at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Authorities note the bin was half full and Nelson previously suffered a neck fracture last year.
Washington UPI reports a major tax revision bill broke a Senate jurisdictional logjam and moved toward action. The dispute over budget rules and revenue targets pitted Budget Chairman Edmund Muskie against Finance Committee head Russell Long, with Kennedy backers losing ground as the bill’s momentum faced time pressure before tax cuts expire.
