Pork Appreciation Day Draws Southeast Iowa Crowd

Large turnout at Pork Appreciation Day hosted by the Iowa Pork Producers Association and allied groups at the Washington County Fair Grounds. Event featured a pork barbecue tasting with a joint product from Iowa State University and Farm Best, a lard pie contest judged by Mrs. Dan Allen, and a queen contest judged by a panel including Mrs. Truman Tuttle and Lyle Palmer. Miss Cindy Jones of Crawfordsville crowned district queen after essays on the pork industry. proceeds from pie sales totaled $58 for the Porkette treasury.

Youth escapes injury in tractor accident near Riverside

Gene Kallaus, 14 year old son of Carl and Mrs Kallaus, escaped serious injury when his tractor overturned into a ditch on a Riverside area farm. Brakes locked, tractor toppled trapping him briefly. He freed himself, sustained only bruises with no broken bones suspected. Treated at home, not hospitalized.

Mormon leaders to speak here Sunday gathering

A public meeting of general interest will be held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Washington American Legion Hall on Sunday June 27 at 7 p.m. Two eminent church leaders from Salt Lake City Utah Professor T Edgar Lyon and J Byron Ravsten will speak about the Nauvoo Restoration Project. The event is free with no collection. Washington LDS services will conduct.

Weather Outlook Through Thursday With Cooler North

Weather briefing from United Press International states a cooler pattern across the west and north this afternoon, persisting tonight. Lows around 50 in the north to the low 60s in the south, with Thursday highs from the 70s in the north to near 80 in the south, and a 20 percent shower and thunderstorm chance Friday as warmer air arrives west and central while the extreme east sees little change.

News of Bill Pryor's death in Greencastle Missouri is reported. Pryor was formerly of Washington and father of Mrs. Calvin Little of Washington. Funeral arrangements were not yet determined.

U.S. Raids Moc Chau Barracks Deep in North Vietnam

U.S. Navy planes launched two bombing raids on Moc Chau army barracks about 80 miles southwest of Hanoi. Ground fighting left more than 200 Viet Cong dead as U.S. and Vietnamese troops fought along the length of South Vietnam. U.S. planes flew 52 sorties, with the main bombing effort concentrated in the south and a third strike on Moc Chau in three days signaling emphasis on training centers in the north.

Rites at Wayland for Harry Reschly

Funeral services for Harry Reschly will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Revs. Vernon Gerig Robert Hartzler and Willard Leichty in charge. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery. Reschly died June 22 at the Veterans Hospital in Town City after a tractor mishap. He was born April 6, 1894 near Wayland and married Fannie Conrad December 25, 1919. Surviving are his widow, numerous children, 26 grandchildren, two sisters and five brothers.

Puppet show benefits Washington County Hospital

A Washington group of youngsters staged a charity puppet show titled Cinderella in a driveway venue at the Shearer home. About 35 people attended the matinee and evening performances, with proceeds slightly over $6 donated to the Washington County Hospital Puppets and related show items.

Annual YMCA meeting set for June 29

The 53rd Annual Meeting of the Washington YMCA will be held Tuesday, June 29 with the Y's Men Club. Dinner at 6 20 p m is open to members wives and guests with reservations due by noon June 26. Meal cost one dollar. Y's Men reserve separately but must arrange meals for wives if not tied to the meeting. The program themed We look to the future YMCA includes community talks. Board elections and financial report are planned. Bob Arthur will report on the Building Fund Campaign and Bob Reed on construction progress.

Highland proposes district reorganization hearing next week

Washington and Johnson County boards of education will hold a public hearing Monday June 28 in the Washington County courthouse to consider a reorganization of the Highland Community School District. The plan adds Riverside Ainsworth Liberty Township parts of Fremont Pleasant Valley and part of the Middleburg district. The district would grow by about 100 students to roughly 800 and a new junior high high school building on highway 218 is nearing completion. Objections must be in writing before the hearing.

Crawfordsville girl crowned 1965 District Park Queen

Cindy Jones sixteen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Alvin Jones of rural Crawfordsville, was named 1965 District Park Queen at the Pork Appreciation Day event. The crowning occurred Tuesday evening at the Washington County Fairgrounds with 1964 District Queen Sharon Lee of Mt Union and Nancy Johnson of Dewitt assisting, photo credits Dallas Kinney.
